Gosh, Warren would’ve been a great POTUS. Damn the right wing of the Democratic Party like Obama, Pelosi, and Schumer.
Watching them try and help people then know it can all be undone by Sinema or Manchin makes my blood boil.
We spent billions to build a ship just for brown water and send a coast guard cutter instead because the program has been a disaster.
Going to be real humbling when we get into an actual war against an opponent that can fight back with more than 60 year old AKs and RPGs and we get our shit pushed in because we spent billions on shit that just looks cool but can't really do anything.
Taxing millionaires at higher marginal rates is an argument the Democrats win every time. As long as the focus is the tax bracket, the GOP really can’t engage much public debate and win anyone but their true believers.
Oh they’ll try. Prepare for an endless torrance of “but small business owners” from the right wing spin machine.
I don’t think it resonates like it did 20-30 years ago. The only people eating it up are people who are never going to stray from a straight R ticket anyway.
Indeed. The more interesting part of Biden’s plan relative to taxes imo is stepped up IRS enforcement and modernization efforts. All of the evidence over the past two decades suggests that the overwhelming majority of tax fraud and underreporting is on non-wage income; meanwhile the IRS has shrunk by nearly 25% since 2008 and low wage earners are much more likely to be audited than those reporting significant non-wage income - in large part because the IRS lacks investigation and enforcement resources. Prepare for the GOP to fight the $80 billion in IRS funding for stepped up enforcement harder than the tax increases themselves.
There are a lot of first hundred day opinion pieces hitting the news cycle right now. I expected Covid relief to be an important part of the agenda, but following it up with a massive infrastructure and spending plan is an interesting next move to me. Most economic indicators are showing an economy that is heating up. If the 2022 midterms are about the economy, that is a classic incumbent party winning strategy.
Abolish ICE, fuck them having a leader just eliminate it. It’s not needed, a bunch of child abusing, rapist, racist pieces of shit. People in ICE should be physically beaten daily for the rest of their days
Here's Biden's tax plan (and education and healthcare plans) that he'll be speaking about tonight: https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/American-Families-Plan-Fact-Sheet-FINAL.pdf Cliffs on taxes: nothing that hasn't previously been reported, I don't believe Top rate on ordinary income returns to 39.6% Earners making over $1m will pay 39.6% on capital gains Eliminate the step up in basis at death in excess of $1m single/$2.5m MFJ, subject to exceptions for small businesses and farms Eliminating 83(b)/1061/carried interest Reforming 1031 exchanges so that they only apply to gains less than $500k Making permanent section 461(l) limiting use of excess business losses
feel like the IRS enforcement changes aren't really going to affect the multi multi millionaire class (read 100s of millions) and billionaire class, but moreso the people that earn 6 figures that don't have access to the best CPAs in the world i have nothing to back this up beyond my feels
But is the capital gains rate still based on ordinary income? Or does income from capital gains get included in that? Not sure how that works or would work under the plan but they have to make sure people can't take their salaries in stock options to avoid top marginal tax rates on ordinary income and cap gains.
Maybe it was linked here but I listened to a pod recently with a really good argument for higher taxes on the wealthy related to velocity of money. Basically the faster money changes hands in the economy, the more the economy grows. 20 years ago a dollar changed hands like 17 times a year. Now it's 4. Two reasons are we have a lot more dollars because of printing more of them but a huge one is the very richest people in the U.S. are sitting on way more money than they can feasibly spend. Tax them shits and get those dollars moving through the system faster and we grow faster. That's a great bottom up argument that's amoral for anyone needing one if their daily conversations.
from the article On menthol, African American health groups and researchers say it is clear that Blacks have been disproportionately hurt by the cigarettes, which studies show are more addictive and harder to stop using than non-menthol cigarettes. In the 1950s, only about 10 percent of Black smokers used menthol cigarettes. Today, that proportion is more than 85 percent, three times the rate for White smokers. African Americans die of tobacco-related illnesses, including cancer and heart disease, at higher rates than other groups, according to studies. Researchers also have found that menthol contributes heavily to young smokers of all races starting the habit by masking the throat irritation caused by cigarettes. Small, flavored cigars, called cigarillos, also have become increasingly popular among young people, studies show. Civil rights groups and Black health organizations say the popularity of menthol cigarettes among African Americans reflects a calculated campaign by manufacturers to target communities of color that began decades ago. The letter noted that the tobacco industry gave away free samples menthol cigarettes at gatherings in African American neighborhoods, promoted menthol tobacco through extensive advertising and sponsored educational and cultural events, such as jazz festivals, popular with the Black community. Throughout the years, the industry also has donated generously to the political campaigns of many Black, as well as White, lawmakers.
Every time the topic of cigarettes comes up, I do find it interesting how we were able to recognize and legislate on those health issues (I know this did not come easily), but when it comes to food and it's impact on the environment and on our individual health and the cost to taxpayers, it is a non-starter. I wonder what, if anything will trigger serious discussion and action about conversations that have been shunned and shutdown so quickly like sugar drinks as an example. I know our entire healthcare system and funding needs to be reconsidered, but there is no question that obesity resulting from ingesting certain "foods" plays a major role in the associated diseases and subsequently our current health crisis. It simply comes down to what is on the socially acceptable to go after list, like marijuana versus alcohol, without regard to the overall objective utility or damage to society.
The free sample thing is so insidious. Finished Patrick Radden Keefe's book on The Sacklers last week. Free samples was a technique to get everyone hooked on oxy
Jesus fucking Christ, Kamala. If the below doesn’t immediately make you break out in hives, check out the wiki entry on cia activities in Guatemala.
Full disclosure: I have no other experience with this podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podca...ith-nick-hanauer/id1445901378?i=1000510290327
May be true on narcotics but I did a primary care rotation in the Mississippi delta. When our patients couldn’t pay for medications they relied solely on free samples for diabetes and heart medications.
free samples are a way to get everyone hooked on every drug ever. it’s no different than what dealers did with crack
Yeah that was getting rightly dragged on Twitter. I'm hoping Kamala is just reading what someone told her to read, but WOOF if she actually believes this.
people earning in the (perhaps low) six figs are mostly making money off their labor and wouldn't have any benefit from a fancy CPA anyways.
They’re too big for true near-shore ops, too lightly armed to go against modern frigates, and have shitty anti-missile defense and so are useless in a task force. It’s a multi-billion dollar program with no mission designed to keep shipyards operating. In theory they’re gunna add a cruise missile system to the next batch which raises them to “not entirely useless frigates” but we could also just build a few more destroyers that do the job better.
So what happens when (lol) we get new federal gun restrictions to the states who are saying they aren’t going to enforce them? End federal funding to the states that don’t comply?
i wish the media would spend even a tenth of the time covering how unhinged and insane the khive is as they did on the bernie bro narrative as always, don't read the replies
Our history in developing countries is becoming increasingly mainstream knowledge, and the obligation to provide humanitarian assurance and capital investment in disparate places should continue to gain more support.
probably. it all depends on if you think $300 is a fair price for the saved time/effort on your end. my mom is a cpa and i will calculate my taxes to compare to her software and the two numbers are usually about the same. her software also files the forms so that's the convenient part.
