Yeah Will is awesome. I haven't watched that video but I see the title and typically the reason no Indycar guys ever go over to F1 is because in F1 there is typically only a handful of teams that actually "win" every year and those teams aren't going to risk taking on an outsider. Then if you're not one of the best F1 teams they're not attractive enough for a top Indycar driver to leave Indycar only to be fighting for P10's. I'm sure there are other reasons but that's what I've always understood.
It took him 5 minutes to get to the reason, and it's something that he could have gotten to in 15 seconds. F1 drivers come from a very specific pipeline of the European feeder series and are groomed by teams since they are teenagers. Oh, and many of them come with tens of millions in financial backing. Something that isn't that prevalent in American motorsports
Will was fantastic asset to the F1 broadcast team before ESPN got the rights. He’s a follow for me because of what you listed. His passion is amazing. And he’s able to deliver a message about a somewhat complicated sport in an easy to digest message. He’s great.
I do agree with the majority of this statement. I would say American drivers also have a system but money isn’t so overwhelming in America where a kid with zero money or backing could break into the top form of racing. I think it’s impossible to do so with F1. It’s a millionaire to billionaire pipeline
Karun Chandock delivers similar passion and enthusiasm while also having raced F1 cars. I guess my point isn't to shit on Will. But F1 has a lot of fantastic people covering the sport. I guess that's the takeaway if I'm going to say anything
Will carried a ton of the load when F1 was on NBC Sports and F1 was dragging ass in popularity in the US. He was the best part of that broadcast.
my good friend went the first year and sat in the grandstands at turn one and said it was fantastic. outside of that I got no other Info to provide outside of telling you I’m jealous
Haven't posted in a long time but as a turn 11 evangelist, I felt compelled. I've been fortunate enough to go to the race every year it's been run at COTA except 2012, and I've sat on the hill behind turn 11 on race day every time. You can see the cars crest the hill way up at turn 10, usually get some good passing in the braking zone right in front of you, and then you can see them race away a long way down the back straight. Plus the hill has amphitheater shape to it so getting your view blocked by people in front of you doesn't really happen there I use practices and quali to explore other parts - the esses are fun to check out a session, turn one too but it's hell on race day (tried first year, was no space so left for 11), and then the triple apex under the tower is cool too cause you can also see across to the exit of turn 1
Breaking your self imposed silence is appreciated Canada was cancelled for me last year so excited to make it up in Austin
Do you guys support teams, drivers or a mixture of both? I find myself liking a lot of drivers from the Netflix series but fans seem to follow teams more.
Seems natural as an American to root for McLaren with Zak Brown there. Couple that with an exciting driver line-up and a team seemingly on the ascendency it's a pretty easy case to make. In reality though, when I'm watching a race, I'm more interested in watching a competitive/interesting race than just tracking where the McLarens are. AT is an easy team to root for given they are basically an RB B-team and their best driver was basically booted from RB only to rebound to a new level. Ferrari as a team is kind of a mess, but at the same time I like Sainz and Leclerc. Aston Martin is an easy villain to me given their "Pink Mercedes" scandal, incessant whining about regulations this year, and the fact that it would be really fun to watch Stroll Sr fail miserably. I also generally root for Red Bull over Merc just because I think it's fun when the top spot is actually competitive.
The McLarens are my favorite, but I like a ton of the drivers. This is definitely because of the Netflix series.
I'm not a fan of 1 particular driver or team over all else. I'm just a fan of F1 overall and for the specific teams and drivers it's more like what I've organized below. Drivers Like: Russell, Lewis, Lando, Max, Riccardo Indifferent: Sainz, Gasly, Perez, Bottas, Tsunoda, Ocon, Leclerc, Schumacher, Alonso, Seb, Latifi, Raikkonen, Giovinazzi Don't like: Stroll, Mazepin Teams Like: Red Bull, McLaren, Williams Indifferent: Alpha Tauri, Alfa Romeo, Haas, Mercedes, Ferrari Don't like: Aston Martin, Alpine
Mainly just go for Ferrari, but still go for Alonso now that he's back. Haven't really picked a new up and coming driver just yet
Watching practice from today because I don’t have shit else to do right now, this Portuguese track is sick!
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but this seems like a track where a lesser car could win, no? Seemed like it’s not as much straight line and a lot more precision during qualifying
The only track that really evens things out to where a traditional mid pack or lower car has a legitimate shot is a wet track. You will get a wild result like Gasly last year for example every once in a while but stars have to align on that where there are wrecks, engine failures, etc... Doesn't necessarily have to do with the track itself.
Gotcha. Wasn’t sure with all the elevation shifts, winds, and blind turns if that would lead to some different results.
charles had a bad first run. Wind increased 5mph and nearly everyone had slower 2nd runs. Generally Charles will crush that 2nd run. But good for Carlos. Ferrari on split strategy for the race. Seems like they rather have started on the mediums. Let’s see how it plays out tomorrow. Should be a fun race
he and sainz seem to have transition to a new team the best thus far. Ferrari with a bad call to put Carlos on those mediums or he could’ve been right there with Norris and Charles
Portugal is a fun track to watch them run on. With we had some more passing but I like the return to this track
he made a comment that they weren’t monitoring track limits in turn 14 (I’m guessing that’s where they got him) and if true I’m curious if they fight this post race.
Merc figured the car out? Lewis was untouchable today. Max doesn’t stand a chance if Checo can’t get up there with him.
Checo not having any fight when Lewis overtook him kinda surprised me. I know he didn’t have great tires but it looked like he just moved over for him.
