Holy fuck I just found my favorite MP3 player of all time, a RCA Lyra. 128mb, I used to be able to pack about 25 songs on this bad boy. I must get batteries in this and see what I was listening to decades ago.

I do like that shooting star song as well as born in winter go go godzilla

not exactly opposed to cookie monster vocals but haven't found the Gojira brand of corresponding soundscapes for the most part all that interesting

I honestly have heard maybe 5% of their music, it's just that everything I heard in the past was not appealing to me. I owned their first or second album at one point, don't think I listened to more than 3-4 songs from it.

Absurdly disappointed I can't get this Lyra to turn on with rechargeable batteries, and I don't have any standard batteries after going full battery nazi when 6-7 alkalines ruined things in a 8-12 month span.

It's not even close to the DH, but what is, really?

They have a very... "mechanical" sound that works much better live. I love From Mars to Sirius, though. I hate talking like this, but it's kind of a referendum on where progressive metal was at in 2005. Nothing really sounded like that at the time

Highlights: Where Dragons Dwell, Flying Whales (GIANT riff), To Sirius

bonus points for being an incredible live band

i was in the way back floor area at the roseland when they opened for Mastodon and i thought there was going to be a riot when they played Flying Whales

I'll try to squeeze it in this weekend. I just have a feeling I'm more Gorod than Gojira, especially in the 2005 era.

Not familiar with Gorod from that era. Gojira definitely wishes that they had a riff like this one, since they love the big tapped riffs. Similar "mechanical" style but frankly Gorod's riffing is better. I loved the album AErthra or w/e.

From Mars to Sirius is worth a listen, in any case

This is likely my favorite Gorod song, it's from 2009. Most would say their 2006 album was peak Gorod.

i was worried that it would be too much death metal for me at the start. and then the great spacy riffs with that loose drumming came in :rockin:

    yeah this song is sick

Haven't got to that one yet. Been in the queue for a couple weeks but the 2021 queue is currently 253 albums deep. It can go quick on some albums though, couple shitty songs to start the show and I bail.

Well that was certainly better than I thought it was going to be. Enjoyable even. What a stupid album cover though, and their band name still sucks. I'll never run out of reasons to hate them, no matter how fabricated the reasons may become. From The Sky was likely my favorite song for the once through. I can see Tool fans liking them, so much in common.

I’ve been going back through their discography the past several weeks since the release. They’re a fun band to me but I agree, they don’t have a lot of truly stand out material. The imagery is what really helped sell them. I actually just wrapped up Torture this morning so just a few albums left.

they are like the "prototype" death metal band.

like, Cannibal Corpse should be next to death metal in the dictionary. they embody all of stereotypes of the genre perfectly.

i've heard them described as "meat and potatoes" death metal, which is perfect.

    I agree. They’re the stereotype.

They just don’t have any albums that really stick out to me that I frequently revisit. The early ones are the famous ones but I would argue it was as much for imagery and themes as anything. They’re fun, I like them. But while they’re the most famous death metal band I wouldn’t consider them the best.

And yeah their latest is pretty good.

Well, hate to say it but this Cannibal is the worst album they've released in over a decade. All the reviews tell me I'm wrong, I know. Just found it to be incredibly flat and generic (more than their usual).
