I think getting the OL to 2018 level is ambitious. But the main issue i have is receivers. I dont think ND had middle of the pack receiver P5 talent. Also damn worried about DB but thats nothing new. But I feel receiver is one of the most important positions in football nowadays and ND has absolute dogtrash here

I actually love the defense. There are some questions like replacing JOK and can Griffith figure it out, but I think the slime can be close to elite and the LB Corp as a whole is good. As always it’s which receiver will step up

I know absolutely nothing about the kid but I’d be more than a little mildly surprised if an elite, blue chip LT prospect would be that open to switching positions when he could walk in and compete right away for playing time at most other schools.

is going to RT to potentially start straight away such a big change of positions. Sure RT is a bit more power and a bit less pass pro its still broadly similar in development

If this year is a 10-2 or 9-3 year, but we at least see signs of emergence of young wr's like Colzie, Styles, Watts that's not the end of the world.

I think we can all agree on a few things:
    1. 2021 is not a title contending team
    2. Playoff isn't impossible but a lot would have to go right
    3. The program taking the next step forward towards a legit title contender is reliant on Buchner being a Heisman candidate

Problem is that Mayer isn't going to be around past 2022 so we may need it to happen with a qb in his first year starting. Right up Kelly's alley I guess.

There will be more of this coming per Matt Freeman

”Strategically, we're looking at May as if we were on the road, making our presence felt from our office. It means that in your geographical recruiting areas, you're Zooming coaches, making your presence known within your geographical area. We're going to be doing some other things that will get the attention of those people in that geographical area that are within the framework of the NCAA rules."

Brian Kelly told the media last week Notre Dame was set to start making a push this month in geographical areas with high school coaches and recruits.

Kelly's last sentence above is a telling one. I'd look for Notre Dame to make another big-time move on a national level over the next week or so in specific geographical areas.

Mike Elston stated earlier this month one of his strengths comes from a creative standpoint and this will certainly be creative. I don't believe it will be as high-energy like the Pot of Gold on St. Patrick's Day, but it will be a clear message to recruits the Irish are embracing the Name, Image, and Likeness legislation along with making Notre Dame a presence behind enemy lines.

I also think the direction Notre Dame is taking its recruiting efforts is great. They are being more aggressive in a number of ways, but also doing more to get the brand in front of more recruits. Recruits are on their phones a ton along with everyone else, so the more Notre Dame is front and center on Social Media, the better.

That blitz pickup by Blake was incredible - first the recognition to see the late blitz and then the ability to react to it was crazy for what is essentially a high school senior

I had Blake a 5* coming out of HS but I think I might have undersold him a bit. He should have been a top 10 overall guy and probably the best OL in last year's class.

I thought Tosh was the best OL in the last 2 classes coming out of HS but him choosing not to EE and then getting injured playing basketball in the spring of his SR year messed up his football development and now he's already behind Blake. I still have high high hopes for Tosh but he's going to be the RT to Blake's LT in 2022.

    ToT Defense

“It starts with Houston (Griffith) really having a great spring. He was outstanding in all areas. When you feel you have a veteran player like that along with Kyle Hamilton and D.J. Brown, who’s played a lot of football for us and had a great spring…Litch(field Ajavon) made some nice plays. K.J. (Wallace) is getting better for us out there. We saw (Justin) Walters show himself today. We’re still working on finding that next player, but I’m pleased with the spring we’ve had at the safety position.” – Brian Kelly

    THE FREEMAN DEFENSE
The rules for Saturday’s Blue-Gold Game in Notre Dame Stadium reportedly included a no-blitz policy. While new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman didn’t bring pressures from defensive backs, he certainly deployed his linebackers to crease the interior gaps and challenge the offensive line.

And while we didn’t see the gamut of pressures that undoubtedly will be part of Freeman’s package this fall, his intentions as it relates to giving opposing offenses plenty to think about pre- and post-snap were in evidence in the Blue team’s 17-3 victory over the Golds, which was in essence a victory for the defense over the offense.

A total of 18 tackles for loss and nine sacks is pretty customary for Blue-Gold Games with quarterbacks – Jack Coan and Drew Pyne, anyway – wearing red jerseys. A couple of springs ago, Phil Jurkovec was under siege during a nightmarish afternoon in Notre Dame Stadium.

This wasn’t nearly that bad, which says something about the talent level – if not experience – of Notre Dame’s offensive line against what should be, by all accounts, a pretty stout front defensive seven under Freeman this fall.

It’s particularly interesting to see what Freeman does with his linebackers pre-snap. They are constantly bobbing and weaving, jab-stepping and faking blitzes, and then slamming into the line. That has a tremendous trickle-down impact on an offense.

Once the center suspects a linebacker ramming his way into the A gap, he’s placed on alert, as is the guard next to him. The quarterback feels a sense of anxiety not knowing whether his interior offensive linemen will be able to pick up the blitz or whether he has his offensive line in the right protection. The split-second impact on the precise timing of a play for the offense is enough to tip the apple cart in the defense’s favor.

Marist Liufau, Bo Bauer and Shayne Simon frequently challenged the Irish offense pre-snap and post-snap. There were a total of 109 plays for a combined 558 yards. The offense hit some big pass plays through the air. There were a total of 66 pass attempts and 36 completions (54.5 percent) for 494 yards. That’s 7.4 yards per pass attempt and 13.7 yards per completion. That’s a decent number defensively for yards per pass attempt, but too lenient for yards per completion.

The defense really bottled things up in the running game. There were 42 rushing attempts for 64 yards. In other words, the Irish ran the football for just 1.5 yards per attempt with 18 of the 42 “carries” (42.8 percent) going for lost yardage.

The true gauge is the productivity of the three running backs – Kyren Williams, Chris Tyree and C’Bo Flemister – who combined for 70 yards on 20 carries (3.5-yard average) with Tyree the most productive. He had 10 carries for 43 yards with a long of 16.

The questions still remain on the back end of the Irish defense, despite the plaudits offered by Kelly about the safety positions minus Kyle Hamilton this fall. But up front, it’s going to be fun to watch the games that Freeman likes to play to discombobulate offenses. If the secondary can make continual strides as it progresses through the season, this could be another special defense in the Brian Kelly era. They’re stacking depth up nicely once again.

    PRESSURE A ‘PACKAGE DEAL’
Working with the Blue team were defensive ends Justin Ademilola, Isaiah Foskey and Alexander Ehrensberger with tackles Jayson Ademilola and Howard Cross III. For the Golds, it was Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, Jordan Botelho and NaNa Osafo-Mensah at end with tackles Kurt Hinish and Rylie Mills. Nose tackle Aidan Keanaaina saw snaps with both squads.

I continue to be impressed with Tagovailoa-Amosa’s progress at defensive end. Impressed? Actually, really surprised at how quick and agile he looks coming off the edge. In fact, eight defensive linemen – all but Ehrensberger, Mills and Keanaaina – were credited with sacks. (Note: Four stops by a nose tackle in limited action – Keanaaina – summarizes what an impressive spring he had.)

I’m not sure Notre Dame will have a 10-sack guy this fall, but that doesn’t really matter if you’re bringing pressures from all angles and a bunch of defensive linemen are the beneficiaries. That’s why I wouldn’t panic about Foskey getting completely stoned by left tackle Blake Fisher most of the afternoon. Freeman’s defense will move the front around, confuse offenses, and create “scheme sacks” that all add up.

Linebackers will get their share of sacks because of the pressures. Defensive tackles will get their share of sacks because of what the ends and linebackers are creating. Although we didn’t see it in the Blue-Gold Game, Freeman will pick his spots to bring cornerbacks. Cam Hart, at 6-foot-2½, raises interesting possibilities, and it goes without saying that Kyle Hamilton can swoop in like a condor when Freeman feels safe enough to bring Hamilton from the third level.

Sack totals aren’t necessarily the end-all be-all. Pressures can create incompletions and interceptions. Cincinnati had 16 interceptions in both 2019 and 2020. The Bearcats’ 32 interceptions the last two seasons were the most in the FBS. And while Mike Mickens is an excellent cornerbacks coach, it should be noted that in his last year with the Bearcats, they had 16 interceptions in 14 games. They had 16 more in 2020 in just 10 games while Mickens was at Notre Dame.

So it’s quality defensive back play, but much of that is created by what Freeman designs up front.

    LINEBACKER PERFORMANCES
Jack Kiser: I was on record at the time in disagreement with the exaggerated pursuit of Jack Kiser from a high school with a 444 enrollment in a town of 861. It was clear that Kiser was a special talent on the Single A level of prep football in Indiana. But would it really translate to a linebacker position at Notre Dame?

That’s why Clark Lea makes the big bucks. I was wrong. Lea was adamant in his pursuit of Kiser. This kid’s football instincts are off the chart.

The reason he makes so many tackles in the passing game – think about the videos from the first 14 practices – is because Kiser knows what the offense’s intentions are in the passing game. He has the uncanny ability to be tracking the intended receiver. Kiser – as he did in his only start of the 2020 season against South Florida – led all tacklers in the Blue-Gold Game with eight. He tied Marist Liufau in solo tackles with five.

Marist Liufau/Shayne Simon/Bo Bauer: I’ve liked Liufau on the field at linebacker since the opening game against Duke last year, and Liufau didn’t really know what he was doing quite yet. Liufau always made more sense to me than Shayne Simon because of his foot speed/overall athleticism and desire for contact.

I don’t believe Notre Dame defeats North Carolina by two touchdowns in Chapel Hill last November if Lea doesn’t use Liufau to clog up the slant passing lanes, which had been a significant part of the Tar Heels’ offensive attack.

In my opinion, Liufau is one of Notre Dame’s top four linebackers, along with Drew White, Bo Bauer and Kiser. Shayne Simon showed once again why he earned time against the pass last year on his well-played interception in the Blue-Gold Game. When Freeman employs him as that run-blitz battering ram, it forces Simon to be physical.

I trust Freeman will put the best linebackers on the field this fall and that the quintet of White, Bauer, Kiser, Liufau and Simon will have more than enough snaps to divvy up among them. Isaiah Pryor will get on the field as Kiser’s backup, at least until Paul Moala is fully-functional off his Achilles injury.

This is a very good, very deep linebacker corps aligned right behind a very good, very deep defensive line.

    ASSESSING THE DEFENSIVE BACKS
KJ Wallace / Caleb Offord: There were just two defensive backs that recorded a pass breakup in the Blue-Gold Game. One could have gotten 300-1 odds (on Kentucky Derby day) that the PBUs recorded by the Gold defense would come from safety K.J. Wallace and cornerback Caleb Offord, and that Litchfield Ajavon would have a game-high two.

Offord has struggled adapting to the college game, which is likely why we saw so much of early-entry freshmen Philip Riley and Ryan Barnes throughout the spring. But he had a solid day on the biggest stage of the spring.

Wallace appears to be someone to consider for the safety spot opposite Kyle Hamilton. The lack of size (5-foot-10¼, 189 pounds) is not ideal, just as it wasn’t with 5-foot-9 Shaun Crawford. But contrary to Houston Griffith – who had a great spring according to Brian Kelly – Wallace relishes contact. He tied for the third-most stops in the Blue-Gold Game with four to go along with his pass breakup.

Houston Griffith: The question has never been about athleticism. It jumps out at times. It’s about physicality. It’s about taking someone on and lighting him up. How do you play safety at this level without being consistently physical? You can’t. It’s a component to Griffith’s game that has to become engrained this fall.

Ramon Henderson/Justin Walters: A pair of youngsters that showed well all spring and again in the Blue-Gold Game. Henderson offered physicality from the outset. He did a great job of bodying up Jordan Johnson on a back-shoulder throw in the end zone. He sliced through for a three-yard loss on Chris Tyree.

Walters, of course, came up with one of two interceptions on the day when he slipped inside Lawrence Keys III and picked off Drew Pyne. Walters was around the football a lot this spring and certainly had ample opportunities with the No. 2 defensive unit.

The depth is starting to develop on the back end of the defense.

DJ Brown: Brown trails too many plays for those on the outside to be overly impressed. We can only judge things based upon what we see. In the Blue-Gold Game, however, Brown played a very physical brand of football, which is an edge he has over Griffith.

Once again, he trailed Avery Davis on an overthrown pass in the end zone. He also missed a tackle on tight end George Takacs, which is a tough assignment in the open field against a 6-foot-6, 245-pounder. But Brown showed savvy to conclude the spring.

Keep in mind that Brian Kelly said he had “no questions about the ability of (Griffith and Brown) to do the job.” Kelly doesn’t usually offer such praise if he doesn’t mean it. So there’s that.

Clarence Lewis / Cam Hart/ TaRiq Bracy: Here are the top three cornerbacks, not necessarily in that order. Lewis is a lock for the starting lineup. The staff has liked him since the day he walked on campus. His skills/potential make him a no-doubt-about-it starter, even if the masses haven’t always seen it.

Hart is the most interesting of this group and a real wildcard for Freeman’s defense. If Hart is the real deal, it would be a difference-maker for the defense. It was fascinating to hear Paul Burmeister and Corey Robinson relay the information from Kelly and Freeman that Hart is “an early candidate for defensive MVP.”

We don’t know Freeman well enough to know if that’s a completely hyperbole-free statement to the media. In his lone Zoom interview this spring, Freeman offered a lot of plaudits for a lot of people. But again, Kelly doesn’t throw superlatives around loosely, so if he said and/or concurred that Hart is an early candidate for defensive MVP, that is extremely noteworthy.

I still hold out hope for Bracy maximizing his skills. He made a really nice open-field tackle on Cane Berrong. It was a good day for Bracy with four solo tackles, one for loss, and a pass breakup. Once he lost his confidence last season, he just couldn’t make a play. But trio that can play with Henderson trending is within the realm of possibility.

Litchfield Ajavon: With indications the last couple years that Ajavon is not a legitimate candidate for a starting role or significant playing time notwithstanding, Ajavon had a good day. Credit to Ajavon for delivering the lumber during the Blue-Gold Game, particularly on the massive collision with Joe Wilkins Jr. at the goal line. In a game situation, that’s almost undoubtedly targeting because officials are going to throw flags at the slightest hint of a defenseless offensive player in peril. But good to see the physicality. Ajavon also had a pass breakup on C’Bo Flemister.

    QUICK-HITTERS: DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS
As mentioned in the offensive Tale of the Tape, Isaiah Foskey really struggled against left tackle Blake Fisher. Foskey could not deliver a big enough punch to get Fisher off-balance. If you don’t get Fisher’s 330 pounds off-balance, you lose…Very impressive trip-up tackle by Jordan Botelho on Chris Tyree…I know Tyler Buchner had Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa wobbling all over the place on Buchner’s first read-option keeper. But MTA prevented Buchner from getting outside, forced him back inside, and the play gained just three…The push by Kurt Hinish on Rocco Spindler to walk him back into Drew Pyne was “The Blind Side” like. That’s 23-year-old strength versus 18-year-old-strength. Hinish didn’t have to exert full energy…

    12COMMENTS
The close-up shot of Rylie Mills shows just how physically imposing he is at 6-foot-5 1/8…Nice play by LB-Osita Ekwonu beating a block to tackle Kyren Williams for a one-yard gain…Way too shallow of a tackle angle – as Corey Robinson correctly pointed out – by Bo Bauer on a wide swing pass to Williams. That was the old Bo Bauer’s tackle angle…Pretty cool seeing Marcus Freeman’s interaction with players and officials on the sideline. What an engaging personality. Freeman was the first one to greet Shayne Simon on his interception…Like Mills, it’s pretty difficult not to be impressed with Simon’s physical makeup. Now he needs to maximize it as Freeman reportedly is encouraging Simon to do…

Cam Hart’s length plays well in the run game, too. He did a nice job of coming off a block and using his length to slice between blocks and stop Williams for a four-yard run. He also ate up a block attempt by Wilkins on a 4th-and-goal play…A textbook hog-tie by Jack Kiser of C’Bo Flemister swing pass…Lawrence Keys III back to fielding punts. That’s a good thing…No kick-block pressure allowed for Blue-Gold Game, but Jonathan Doerer (27-yard FG) and Harrison Leonard (37) were relaxed and accurate…Justin Walters was a gunner on punt coverage…A forgotten footnote when all is said and done, but walk-on defensive lineman Zane Heemsoth (93) represented himself well.

it's funny - in the thread for the ToT I just posted, some of the posters were calling out Prister for saying with absolute certainty that Blake Fisher would not be a LT at ND, he just wasn't good enough. They gave Prister quite a bit of grief.

It's good that he admitted he was wrong about Jack Kiser in the article above...kid was one of the lowest rated recruits in that class and is now one of the best LBs at ND. Kiser and Jordan Johnson are good examples of why you don't judge a class on NSD.
