I’m starting to get a bit concerned that we may be decent next year. I expect Campbell to be a buffoon, but his staff seems much more competent than Patricia’s. So jumping up from abysmal to mediocre coaching, plus the draft we had, could have us around .500ish. This assumes good health because there isn’t much depth. But if a rookie DL steps up, Sewell is who we think he is, and Odukah makes a jump I don’t think there’s any way we’re picking in the top 5. I wish we’d just cut Goff or something.
Hey man, I hope you’re right. I’m drinking the kool-aid for the first time in decades and I’m probably a lightweight at the moment.
I'm just taking L after L out here. I counted 13 Ls on their schedule and assumed I counted 1 twice because of a 16 game schedule. A 17 game schedule is very stupid.
My hope for next season is the team plays hard, young guys show improvement and Campbell shows decent game management. The best case is we win 3-6 games but Goff looks good so we can have hope of moving him.
every group outside of QB and WR are better by default. Coaching could not possibly be worse than what's been the last 3 years
People underestimate how much Stafford bailed this team out. Just look last few years how they have looked in games he didn't play. WR worse. OL better but unsure how much better. Crosby wasn't bad last year and Sewell is a rookie who hasn't played in a year. Long term I think Sewell is a big upgrade but maybe not year one. This team is going to be bad unless Goff finds some old magic
If Goff is a good enough QB that this team wins more than 6 games next year there is no reason to draft a QB. Because even if the DBs and LBs are better and the DL is a wash, this defense still has a looooong way to go.
This is what I’m thinking. QB is definitely a drop off but Goff isn’t awful. The WRs are bad but that could be off-set to an extent with Hock and a good running game. The defense should be much better. I don’t know. Every year it feels like there’s a pesky, over-achieving team that somehow wins about half of its games. I could see that being us. Which isn’t the end of the world but it wouldn’t be good for getting a QB in the draft.
You said you were concerned that the combination of our coaching staff proving to be better and the young talent (Okudah, Sewell, rookie DTs) improving significantly enough might be good enough for us to finish around .500 this year. That is what I responded to. What part of that am I misinterpreting or being obtuse about?
Not being able to connect the dots to where we’d pick in the draft and the chances of us finding a QB being significant diminished.
Some of these Ragnow quotes in the tweets about his extension press conference have kicked up the dust in the office. Big fan of that guy and glad we signed him long term.
I can't fucking wait to sing Gridiron Heroes in Inglewood when Shiela raises Lombardi Trophy next February! I'm going to be fucking PUMPED!!!! Forward down the field, A charging team that will not yield. And when the Blue and Silver wave, Stand and cheer the brave. Rah, Rah, Rah. Go hard, win the game. With honor you will keep your fame. Down the field and gain, A Lion victory!
He's one of the best human beings I've ever worked with. Glad he's been good enough to earn that kind of payday.
The schedule comes out on Wednesday. I bet we get one prime time game outside of Thanksgiving, and it’ll be the Rams. We have never played on TNF, but I bet that changes with that game.
This is a really good article. I am curious who offered the trade Holmes mentioned in the interview. It sounds like someone in that 10-12 range.
Is there a way to read this without subscribing? Because I hate that website and don't want to pay for another site.
Well now I feel dumb. Whenever I'm on my laptop and open one of those SI stories it blurs everything and tells me I have to subscribe to read it. It's different on the phone, apparently.
That's funny because I had just clicked and read the story, then read your post and thought, "Fuck, am I subscribing to this shit and forgot about it?"
I bet the other one was JOK. Would make sense in a variety of ways in terms of him how they discussed the player... didn't think he'd be there, and then basically saying the felt like they "had to" take the guy over him if he was there, but then circling back to Levi, likely because they didn't really know what to do with JOK.
That makes sense. Speaking of safeties, I am surprised we haven’t been linked to Malik Hooker. He would be a great guy to bring in on a prove it deal.
I am calling my shot now: We will be the 2022 subject of Hard Knocks. We have an entertaining staff and it’s entirely possible we have the storyline of a QB battle between Goff and a high draft pick. It’s going to be too much to pass up.
I really don't want Hard Knocks because I think they'd go out of their way to make Campbell look as stupid as possible. He's already got the national media doing that already the last 3 months. It would be entertaining and I'm sure HBO/NFL be all for it, but I'm guessing the edits wouldn't be kind to him.
You’re not wrong, but I’ve come to accept that most people will view Campbell as a dumb meathead, so I am going to just embrace it
Most people will, but with Hard Knocks you're giving them hours of footage to make that case when you have no editorial control. At some point, even if it's a dumb narrative (and we'll see if it is or isn't starting this year), that stuff is hard to overcome. Goff is still dealing with the way he was portrayed five years ago as a rookie on the show in terms of his perception.
We're not going to be eligible in 2022, because we're making the playoffs this year! I'm just kidding. But no chance we're the choice. Nobody gives a shit about the Lions. It'll be the Patriots.
