It remains to be seen if it’s a vision that translate to success, but Urban definitely has a vision for what he wants out of this team.
Thought the pick was definitely a reach but thought he had the work effort to turn into at least a rotation guy. His complete inability to contribute at all is kind of a surprise.
All the terrible picks led us to Trevor, so it’s worth it. we draft Lamar, Dave and Doug might still be collecting paychecks here.
So far from the worst. He was taken 29th and aside from Lamar, most of the good players taken around that spot were RBs. There are a few decent OL taken right after but no one franchise altering. We've had WAAAYYYY higher picks that amounted to the same amount of nothing and hurt way worse.
I just googled "nfl tight ends by age" and that was the first result https://fftoday.com/rankings/dynasty.php?o=1&PosID=40
I see some guys that have played the game of football in the last 5 years, are younger than. 33, and have actually lined up as a TE before.
This is a “you scratch my back, I scratch yours” situation right? Except it’s “you help hide murderers and I help you don the pads one more time.” The most powerful of IOUs. Well played.
Last year the jags two deep on tight ends accounted for 34 receptions and 314 yards. I don’t care for the tebow signing, but it’s really not a big deal at all. Failing to make the position a bigger priority in free agency and the draft was the bigger gaffe.
I just think it sends the wrong message from a new staff. Instead of trying to find the best players he can, Meyer just signed his old buddy neighbor. There's no other team that would have even entertained the idea.
It sends no message, you dummy. It’s a throwaway, no-risk signing. There’s literally zero downside. He probably won’t make the team, but if he does and can contribute, it’s a great story.
I think we did in free agency but were not going to overpay for a couple of the middling TEs. Also don't think they liked teh TE draft class outside of Pitts. Still think we trade for one in the summer.
It’s a PR stunt and highly unlikely that he will make the 53-man roster. I don’t see the big deal. Marketing is just trying to sell tickets and generate fan support/buzz, which this is doing.
we’ll see how it plays out, but spending big on the free agent tight ends got too costly for them, so I have no issue with them showing restraint. none of this years tight ends, sans pitts, were going to help the team this year anyways. More football savvy folks have surmised that we’re going to use our big WR’s for routes that a TE would utilize, so I’m not going to worry about it now. There’s only a handful of great tight ends in the league, and we had zero chance to get any of them this offseason. finally, urban drafted just one of his former players, so it appears that he stuck with the board during the draft, which is what a responsible person would do. I haven’t loved all of urban’s moves so far, but he’s earned the benefit of the doubt.
I get not spending a ton on a FA but you will never convince me Tebow was the best FA TE available to give a shot. He's 33 and has never played the position. Sign him as a PR guy. A radio guy. A low level assistant. But signing him as a TE is a joke.
they signed a TE and drafted one. tebow is probably making the league minimum, so this costs nothing. It’s not a big deal at all.
If he wasn’t an ex-Heisman winnner (dual-threat at that), if he wasn’t a professional-caliber athlete, if he didn’t have less wear and tear on his body with years off from football (making him a young 33 by NFL standards), if he wasn’t a solid teammate, if he wasn’t a good locker room presence, and most importantly if he didn’t have at least a decent chance of being able to play the position he’s trying out for... then it would be joke. But (Florida, Urban, Tebow bias aside) this is a low-risk, high-reward gamble. Would be stupid not to give it a shot.
Weird that no other team would even entertain it yet the UF guy thinks it's would be stupid to not give it a shot. Every non-UF and/or Jags fan laughs at it.
Not religious and think Urban faked his way out of Gainesville. So no bias really other than appreciating the fact they were elite when they were at UF. Laugh cuz of the sideshow/social element of it. But football alone, it’s a low-risk, high-reward bet. If he’s good, he’ll make your team better. If he’s not, he’ll be released and no one will talk about it again past Week 2. So UF fan or not, yeah it’s stupid not to give it a shot.
It may not be a big deal but the biggest story of camp is going to be Tebow. That's pretty shitty and counterproductive to building the team and fan base around the top QB prospect in probably a decade.
1. That was 12 years ago. 2. He wouldn't be getting signed if he didn't play for Meyer at UF. Period. Everyone should be able to admit that. So it's not about a low risk high reward. It's bc he played for Meyer at UF. If he played for Stoops at OU, we're not signing him. That says it all.
1. You don’t still appreciate what past players accomplished? Especially with your team? Kind of pointless to have trophy cases or a Hall of Fame then . Plus 12 years or not, Tebow is only 33. Old for the NFL I get that, but more guys are playing closer to 40. Tebow has low football mileage on his body so to speak. So worth taking a look. 2. Not disagreeing with that fact at all. They prob did discuss it while hanging out by the pool together. But the point is, who gives a shit? Lol. If he turns out to be a stud then Jags’ fans will flip and say “so glad they were neighbors” and NFL media will tweet “31 other teams passed on him” blah blah blah. If he sucks, he’s cut and cycled out of the news in a week. So again, it’s a safe bet so why not? And if the only reason it bothers you is because of their pre-existing relationship then honestly that’s a dumbass reason. NFL players to factory workers get opportunities every single day for that exact reason. Seems silly to be annoyed by something so common.
1. A select few QB and kickers are playing at 40. 33 is old for TE, especially someone that's never played the position. Or any position that requires blocking, route running, or catching for that matter. 2. You can make that argument for any signing ever. I'd prefer to build a roster based off the most deserving and nobody can argue Tebow is that. If you want to put time and effort into a high upside raw TE, go find a young 6'7" basketball player and take a flyer. Putting time and effort into a 33 yr old QB converting to TE is a waste of time and energy.
Maybe if the team had limited resources. But for a billion dollar organization with highly-paid people it’s nothing at all. It’s literally their job.
The staff is not unlimited. They can only put so much time into each player. Wuld you want your team to sign him?
