mostly through my first listen with an already known track closing things out and I feel pretty safe in saying it's the coolest album I've heard in quite a bit
Definitely good. Got through two listens working outside. This album definitely worth a listen. More upbeat popish, but good.
They do have twice the notes as anyone else to use (Unpacking of music theory joke: KG&LW use microtones, which are twice as small as the smallest interval you can get on most normal instruments (half step). 24 quarter tones in an octave instead of 12 half tones. It sounds either out of tune or exotic/cool depending on your perspective)
Looking for a good audio example, but this will help explain visually: That's one octave on a piano, C to C. If you count the notes (white keys and black keys), it takes 12 notes before you get back to where you started. Now picture that there's another key in between each of those white and black keys, so that you have 24 keys to play before you get back to C. They do make modified pianos like this called "prepared piano." On fretless instruments, you can already get the in between notes. KG&LW evidently uses some kind of specially modified guitar
cool, I knew I enjoyed their microtonal albums but didn't have the slightest idea what microtones actually were
I learned about it taking World Music in college. That shit will open your eyes to more possibilities. Some joker like Billy Corgan will tell you he's taken the guitar as far as it can possibly go, then you realize there's entire musical traditions that don't play by the same rules at all. The Indonesian gamelan ("hammer ensemble") was my favorite. Sounds like a straight cacophony of melody and rhythm mixed together You need a whole kit like this to play it
watching Cleveland vs the Cubs on MLB.tv and they have a Nike ad between innings with the Viagra Boys song 'Sports' playing. The guitar riffs in that song are so damn fun
Small anecdote on TWIABP. There was some big emo show in LA about 5-6 years ago with Pinegrove, Into It Over It, TWIABP, and a couple other bands I'm forgetting. My buddy stood me up for the first couple acts so I just drank a lot instead. I was pretty buzzed in the Uber home and saw Ian Cohen tweeted something from the show like "TWIABP is operating on another planet right now, just an incredible live show from a generationally-good band blah blah..." like he does when he's really pushing a band he loves. I probably should have ignored it, but replied something like "Hmm I was at the show too, thought the sound seemed a little muddled and I wasn't too impressed. Will see next time..." or something fairly bland. I woke up in the morning to like 75 twitter notifications on my phone - the band, multiple members of the band, their sound guy, etc. all quote tweeted me or tagged me on their page essentially telling their fans to shit on me, and people were roasting me like crazy. Couldn't believe how insane people were responding to me that I just said "the sound was muddled" to some young indie band. Always kind of disliked the band after that, had like back-to-back-to-back tweets from their live sound guy challenging me about how much I knew about music, etc.
Heard this song many times through generic playlists I just have on during the day. Never realized it was the first single they put out for the album. Next Friday release, between the two we have I think this may be my favorite new album in quite some time.
A new version of IMO the best ending song to a movie ever (Heat). Closely followed by Vangelis’s Blade Runner End Titles.
