Commissary in Germantown was alway very popular, one and only bbq has been the family go to the last couple of gatherings, central was always my quick go to
My brother in law and sister in law live in DC. I’m contemplating buying a flight up there just to see the Brood X cicadas. That’s how lame I am.
It’s an awesome city, I just can’t get over the “you can’t help me so I don’t have time for you” attitude of most of the residents.
Not directed at me, but KEXP is an incredible outlet. They have an app and a livestream online. They also catalog everything for two weeks, so if you figure out a favorite couple of DJs, you’re all set.
I’m not a punk guy myself. But my younger brother is currently the lead guitarist and one of the singers for a punk band called Mixed Kid Fridays. I don’t want to really use tmb as a promotional tool, especially this thread, but since you asked for recommendations I figured I’d do this once. They’re building a small following in the LA area. Here’s a video from a recent online show they played. They’ve got their stuff on all the services in case you want to check out more.
I'm a classic rock, The Who, Elton John, ELO type of guy, but Cake had a concert at the Rock (before it was moved) at UT when I was 19. I was lit, and boy was Cake not it.
You folks ran all the Vols, Bitch posters and USC (Cal) posters off the board. They did suck, tbf. When Tennessee becomes good, Daddy Rabbit and I will become unbearable. We will go your in your team threads and talk mad shit.
certain fan bases were always much more comfortable with privacy and kept it that way when any hiccups happened my own fan base included
Imagine being so far off the west coast deep end that you think Skynyrd is "niche." Zep's the best band of all time. Skynyrd's not, but they're fucking legendary
Led Zeppelin fucking rips, but The Who has more songs that I want to listen to. Boris the Spider slaps.
That’s a very low reflection of the northeast mindset. Also post punk variety but I recommend Squid and Dry Cleaning new albums for your journey today.
Owsley i don’t know your exact route but if you’re going near Clarksdale, Mississippi Abe’s BBQ is worth going out of your way for
I grew up doing all these things in Texas, never listened to lynyrd skynryd or LZ until I was probably 13, and recognize those songs as both equally epic and not in any way regional.
Where are you staying? If you’re staying out east of downtown, I’d go to Germantown Commisary Super underrated IMO is The Bar-B-Q Shop on Madison in midtown
The TB closest to my employer still makes these for a a guy I work with. With the way they’ve cut stuff/stopped making other things they clearly have the ingredients for, I’m mildly shocked every time he rolls back in for lunch with a couple.
Not commenting on their musical abilities or historical place whatsoever, but I’d be perfectly fine if I never heard a Lynyrd Skynyrd song ever again. Going to school in the south gave me enough of them for a lifetime. Hell, I even went to a football game in which those goobers were recognized on the goddamned field.
I mean we have the likes of Maroon 5, Sum 41, and O.A.R. now. Why go back to dinosaurs like Skynard and Zeppelin?
Yeah I feel that. If some of their songs come in in the background somewhere I’m ok with that. Just not searching and playing it myself.
While we’re on the subject, can we take a minute to acknowledge what a great album Supertramp’s Breakfast In America was?
Yup, and I used to love AC/DC. I’ll still listen to a deep track here or there every once in a while, but the rest, I’m good.
Yeah, I think this is probably a common theme for many of us. That said I do listen to “Mr. Banker” often. It’s the best song of theirs IMO, and it never got much mass play. Also, the free Skynyrd concert on the quad for Bama’s homecoming against Ole Miss in 2002 was a lot of fun for 17 year old me. If I remember correctly, it was estimated there were over 30,000 people there shoulder-to-shoulder. You couldn’t hear someone from two feet away after they hit those first four notes of “Sweet Home Alabama”.
Guys. Led Zeppelin is absolutely indispensable, they’re not overrated. Anything they “ripped off” was taken to another level by the otherworldly musicians in that band anyway. Hard blues or folk they were just loaded with creativity and musicianship. I get the south was insulted and we’re rallying but come the fuck on
