They are everywhere here. They are pretty docile and wont bite unless they have too, plus the venom isnt typically deadly, but still not something I want to risk around wife and kids. keep yard clean and but some mothballs/snake repellent out and you will be fine.
Saw these 2 guys today. Black Rattler started rattling when I stepped near him. He was in the shade. Didn't see him. The other guy was chill and never rattled. Just let him do his thing then I passed. Spoiler
Found a nice snake skin today working in the yard. P sure it’s a dekays haven’t seen any snakes moving this spring the retention pond in my backyard is full of shit. Turtles and terrapins everywhere. Last year snakes everywhere.
That's probably my favorite snake overall just because growing up in Athens they were everywhere. Starting this time of year my dad and I would catch 2-3 a month around my house and what was Camp Kelly, but now is River Shoals neighborhood on the Oconee River.
Found this guy at the creek pretty sure it’s a timber rattle snake, it but me a few times so hope I don’t die or it’s just a water snake
Beautiful Eastern King running around my family’s North Georgia property. We got a bunch of them on the property. Haven’t seen many copperheads or rattlers up there the last 3-4 years. This guy is one of our sentinels. Spoiler
I think that’s just a Water snake flattening out to look like a moccasin. Check the eyes. Round pupils.
I had 3 neighbors yesterday show me pics of copperheads in the neighborhood. They are taking over. Folks up here that get bit don't even go to the hospital, apparently. Either they know something about the venom or these hillbillies are taking their chances with a dry bite.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, the ferocious Ringneck Snake [https://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/diapun.htm]. I could hear the frog scream when it struck. Spoiler
Seems like a ring neck to me. I think the head/neck has already shed so you're just seeing the fresh ring. 1ft sounds about right for their size too
I was fishing the other day and smelled that mustsy, disgusting smell of a cotton mouth. It was about 3ft from me and wasn't happy. Don't have any pictures because I got out of there as fast as I could. Those things are really aggressive, and I didn't want any part of it.
Was at the zoo tonight and had to take a picture of this fat boy. Thickest gaboon I’ve ever seen. Legit 6” diameter.
If I were skilled and a crazy fuck venomous keeper, top 2 snakes I’d want would be a gaboon and green mamba. Maybe a king would be #3 Cottonmouth would be last, nobody likes them besides maybe brother owsley
Top 5 5 gabon 4 Russell’s 3 Eastern diamond back 2 urutu 1 bushmaster I like vipers much better than elapids but top 5 elapids 5 tiger snake 4 green mamba 3 rinkas (sp) 2 king cobra 1 coral cobra
fuck every god damn cottonmouth on the planet. My kids are animal lovers and wouldn’t let me kill one about a month ago. Should have anyway but im a big softie
Also Willy (his page, and also on YouTube) is one of my favorite snake guys he doesn’t do the stupid wow and bang stuff like chandler and Tyler or try to act wacky This guy is another great follow, sadly no YouTube page though
So this was probably 15 years ago. My buddy was working on getting his venomous snake license. He was working with a cobra on a table with his trainer. All of sudden he said it felt like someone shot him in the leg and it moved his leg about 2 ft forward. He looks down and sees the gaboon along the side of the cages. In the meantime he’s got a cobra right in front of his chest so he’s trying not to panic so the cobra doesn’t bite him also. He starts telling the trainer that his gaboon bit him. The trainer is like WTH are you talking about. Trainer looks down and sees the gaboon. He grabs the cobra and bags it quickly. Then moves my buddy and gets the gaboon. Turns out the sliding glass on the gaboons cage got off the track slightly allowing an opening for it to get out. So my buddy just starts saying I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die. The trainer is screaming he’s going to jail. Then he starts taking his clothes off. They start the clock on the bite time. They’re in Ocala and nearest antivenom is Miami. He starts pumping his leg as he doesn’t know exactly where he got hit and then notices it around his ankle. He marks the red mark on his leg and keeps marking it as time passes and it gets higher and higher on his leg. He said his leg is on fire. They look down at the clock and notice it’s around 15 min. My buddy is like I feel fine considering and by now he should have been in a serious health condition. About this time he looks at his shoes and pants and there’s venom all over it. Here’s what the think happened. They just feed the gaboon the day before. They think the venom crystallized on the fangs. When he bite my buddy one fang didn’t go through the boot and the other pierced his skin. Since the fang was crystallized that part got in him and all the venom came out on the way out as to why it was all over his pants. He still has the fang of that snake. After that he said he’s done and doesn’t want to get his license after being over 900 hours into handling venomous snakes. Pretty crazy story.
Owsley What we got here? In the mountains of western North Carolina. Not familiar with all snakes around these parts like I am Alabama.
