we haven’t played well. Decent in game 1. Pretty bad tonight. Vasy is just on a heater and we are dangerous enough that we can score 2 or 3 even if we only get a few chances. classic lightning cocky game incoming for game 3.
Tampa can out-skill you or out-shoot you and win both ways. The Avs are probably the only other team in the league that can do that.
not sure about that, I think that what Tampa did last night is exactly the type of games that the avs would press and get exposed. People forget that it’s hard to win as a young group especially when you are the overwhelming favorite. Tampa went through it, wash went through it for a long time. On the other hand Pitt and Chicago won very early.
Was watching a Hawks game and he was talking about how good Duncan Keith was in juniors. Ya no shit a generationally great NHL defenseman was good in juniors, great insight
Someone please give Pierre another shot at the GM job. Preferably someone in the central Speaking of Pierre - this is great
Some of you are so sensitive with the analytics stuff, you guys talk about Colorado and the lightning but forget that the most analytic driven Gm ever was the coyotes Gm. I highly doubt that any Gm just dismiss it. every team does it, some like col get the first overall pick and draft Nathan MacKinnon, then they suck so much that they still pick 4th overall and hit on makar, some like the lightning suck so much that they pick Hedman and stamkos first overall and some team (probably thanks to better analytics and shitty luck) never get to pick first overall. pierre McGuire is not to be taken seriously
you're right, every team does it. so what's the problem with pointing out how dumb it is to pin the Oilers and Leafs losses on analytics?
yeah, I forgot to had the conclusion, it’s in the edit. but it’s alright to make fun of him. my opinion on it is that I would rely on it a lot but I would need to see the kids play live and meet them before drafting, signing or trading for a player. I bet the smart ones use it exactly like that, just a tool but not the top thing on their list.
The only thing more cringe than getting mad about an announcer using the correct pronunciation of a foreign name is trying to get your young child to go viral by tagging half of the league in the tweet containing the video.
I’d argue the most analytic GM is Dubas. AZ did go full analytics with Chakya, but they tried to do it on the cheap by just using analytics with zero ground game staff. You are right that the eye test can’t completely go away, but the GMs who still make decisions based on the eye test of “plays with jam” or “looks like a hockey player” are how you draft Lawson Crouse over Barzal and set your org back 3-5 years. the best organizations, Tampa, Colorado, Carolina, and yes, even Toronto use analytics heavily but still have scouts on the ground building relationships around the World. If you want an example of a great example of a modern scout, look at Rhys Jessop. He’s posted occasionally here. He’s very heavy on analytics but if you listen to him on podcasts, he still grinds hard and goes to a ton of WHL games and talks a ton about stuff you can’t evaluate on a computer without using any of the cliche’s that are a dead giveaway of an old school scout.
The best front offices in the league have large analytics departments, complete with people who can interpret the data and turn it into digestible information that scouts and executives can then use in player evaluation.
Everyone but Arizona knew that was a terrible pick at the time. Drafting a winger that can barely put up .8 PPG in the O? Was he suddenly gonna get better when he started playing against men his own size rather than guys 6 inches and 40 lbs lighter than him?
And scouts that don’t turn in evaluations on guys with a 1st round grade that simply say, “plays with intensity, has the build of hockey player, jam” this may or may not be the word for word actual evaluation by a former scout in the NHL.
Chayka didn’t know how to apply analytics to player evaluation. Context is king with analytics and he never had it.
It was the panthers. And the entire analytics department went to war against that pick. Tallon won and the rest is history.
And Pierre would give all the credit for a Leafs run to Foligno and Simmons had they won a couple rounds no matter if they contributed or not.
that’s exactly how I would use them, and I thought that was probably what smart teams did. Nice post and a scout posted here?
Not surprised, both Letang and Malkin at their age and cap hit would be guys that would be really hard to move to make your team better in the short term. Don’t think they have another option but to ride it out with them.
Lottery tonight. Hoping Anaheim wins it I think NJ and Buffalo both need Power too, but they’ve both won it multiple times recently.
Detroit will win it this year because there’s now rules against winning it multiple times and this is a weak draft at the top you’re welcome
That’s funny but man. Get me out of Toronto if I’m Marner. You know if he ever carries the Leafs in the playoffs the fans will act like they were behind him all the way.
he wanted out during some babcock years, it wasn’t because of the fans but he was still ready to get out of there.
hawks fans are already making weird ass trade scenarios for him https://dawindycity.com/2021/06/02/chicago-blackhawks-3-wild-trade-packages-mitch-marner/
Toronto would laugh at trade 1 and 3 and probably trade 2 as well. Also the piece the Hawks are missing isn't a high scoring winger.
