Damn that bottom half was like a dream draw for her and she couldn't make the finals. I really don't think she is going to get to #24. She will not have a better draw then she had here
I agree, really you can’t take a day off or just get by on the women’s side. There’s just too much quality at this point.
I love Federer but this kind of pisses me off. If you aren’t prepared to go the distance then don’t play.
I don’t think he thought he would sniff the 4th round based on his play before this. Sucks but probably the right call for him. I don’t really like his chances at wimby either but this is probably his last push before he hangs it up.
I'm fine with him playing. As Mary Carillo said on the Serena broadcast though, what he should've done was retire match point up yesterday against Koepfer. You've proven your point, you were going to win the match but you don't screw over the kid or the tournament. Also don't affect the draw by giving Berrettini a walkover in the 2nd week.
I'm not sure I can agree with that - how is he screwing over the kid? He was too good for him over 4 sets and the truth of the matter is that Koepfer couldn't earn his way into the next round by beating a 40 yo. Why should he get a free pass? Plus there was a chance, however slight, that Fed might recover enough to play R4. PLUS the fact Fed has never retired in a slam, so why do it now just because?
I think that's EXACTLY it - this is his farewell to RG. He won't be back next year, mark my words. He showed up as a courtesy with virtually zero lead up play and shocked himself by winning 3 matches on clay. Trust me, when he woke up today, his body was screaming at him - after playing for over 20 years, he knows full well he can't back up tomorrow so he did the right thing.
I was actually surprised she'd gotten so far with such a bad lead up on clay, but once she got through Collins that finals spot was hers for the taking. Then anything can happen in a final. So this is a terrible loss for her.
I more in the I think she’s done camp. I mean I wasn’t predicting she’d lose today or implying that, just saying I don’t think she can just walk through anything anymore. And it’s two fold, obviously she’s lost some but I genuinely think it’s more a testament to how great the women are.
He literally said after the match yesterday he likely wasn’t going to post for the next round. Roger is my guy, and keeping the no retirement streak is a totally valid reason to not go down that road, for sure. That’s a great point. Just feels like he came into the Koepfer match with a premeditated notion it was going to be his last one of the tournament, and that’s just a weird gray area for me.
Maybe. I like to think if he'd won in straight in a couple of hours that he definitely would've played R4. Unfortunately it didn't go that way and here we are now.
I agree. Have to peak at the right time and then play your best games of your life for a couple of weeks nonstop and hope people get injured/drop out like that Russian player accursed of throwing matches in order to have a chance to win.
The crazy part is he was up a break in the first but somehow lost it in a breaker. It took my mind a moment or two to process what I was just looking at. Still gonna win, though. Probably in 4.
I guess it was like 8 months ago, we all were freaking out in here watching Musetti for the first time as he bageled and then battled to beat Stan for his first tour win. Going to be near impossible to hold up that level today, but man he’s come so far, so fast.
2 sets up. Musetti not giving Novak anything and Novak’s all over the place. Big push coming to start the 3rd.
I knew this could happen because of how many times in the past we have seen it but at 34 its incredible
Good run for Kenin, who not surprisingly is playing better ball away from her father. Sakkari-Swiatek could be really fun if Iga can get through this afternoon.
