Though it wasn't a parent (which is waaay harder), I had a similar falling out with a family member a couple years ago. I finally reached the breaking point and told this person that I was done listening to somebody spewing racist trash, that I didn't care to hear it anymore, and that I thought it was sad that this person felt comfortable enough in this group of people to say that shit, but that I was done. Haven't spoken to this person in about two years, and you know what, it's a relief. Again, a parent is a billion times harder, but for me, it was a freeing realization that merely having the same genetic material as this person doesn't mean shit. I haven't liked them in years, it's always been awkward, they always said rude and terrible shit, and it was never ever enjoyable being around them. I would never be in this person's presence if not for being related, so that seems like a dumb reason to subject myself to that. Good luck to you.
I read the whole thing and I wanted to let you know you didn’t overreact. I had a similar experience with my dad. I couldn’t get through to him for a while and whenever he started his Trump bullshit I’d pack my shit up and leave. My two youngest knew that when he mentioned trump it was time to go. After a while and once I told him my oldest daughter was told” to go back to where she is from” he stopped. I don’t know what he believes now because we don’t discuss politics anymore. It’s up to you give them a chance to change but you’re under no obligation to do that. I can say if my dad continue with his shit I’d have cut him out.

My parents stopped talking politics to me. I have made my position clear and I don’t back down. I wonder however if they’ll disown me for the month(s)-long celebration I’m going to extravagantly flaunt when Trump goes to prison or dies.
I’m lucky my parents (except my stepfather) were moderate/soft Republicans and saw through the stupidity (with a little nudging from me). My brothers and sisters, while more conservative than me, have been sliding left at different rates. I have an aunt and uncle who are Trumpers, but they know if they engage me it’s not going to go well so they mostly don’t, My method is to mostly not talk about it or bring it up but state my position clearly and concisely if they bring it up to me. Basically counterpunch but not be overbearing.
Luckily, I grew up with a family of union Democrats. I had a tear-off W-isms daily calendar one year. I definitely tried to do my own thing as a young adult and be a republican, but I have since come around. My in laws are some pieces of shit, though. Pretty sure my MIL is a repressed catholic lesbian and her outlet is to lean into right wing sober Catholicism as hard as possible. Her dad spends all day watching right wing YouTube, investing videos, and tv/movies from the 60s and before. They’re also both very upset that they had three girls and no sons. Their kids are like their pets that they like, but aren’t bonded to. It’s weird, sad, and awful to spend time with them.

That is where I'm at with my dad I flat out told him if Trump got elected again we would leave the country. He is a Fox News squawk box and if he brings up politics I leave the room.
There used to be a billboard on a highway near my house that had a picture of Trump saying "God protect our leaders" with a Bible verse next to it. I always wondered if that same verse would ever be applied to Obama, Hillary or Biden, fully knowing the answer. Sure enough, by December the billboard was gone.

There was a giant billboard on I70 right outside of Fort Riley that had a darkened picture of Obama with the phrase “wannabe marxist dictator”. It was up for nearly his entire presidency. Some crazy bitch in Colorado paid for it. RWNJs love billboards. Cool country.
