So I’m going to install an above ground pool soon I hope. Now the city is telling me my pool walls don’t qualify as a barrier even though their brochure for pools said that would suffice. They said I need to have a fenced in yard, a deck with locking gate or a fence around the entire top of pool. Well I’m not paying lumber prices right now for a deck, every fence company is booked out till October and everywhere is out of fence supplies since we had a huge storm here last year. So my question for you guys is, what’s as good cheap fence for on top my pool to get me through till I lumber prices go down so I can build a deck?

In all honesty, metal (chainlink) might be the best option right now. Anything using plastic resin is most likely going to be through the roof right now as well, if even available.

backinblack23 if you are handy enough & have enough time, grifting enough like-sized pallets can pay off pretty well aesthetically.

Here in Birmingham we got 7 inches of rain in an afternoon and it brought the water level in my pool all the way up to the coping. Two days later I got home from being out of town to find the pool half empty. Son of a bitch. After a few weeks of investigating it on my own I was finally able to get a leak detection company out and they confirmed my suspicion that I had a major leak in my return line.

So I started digging. Unfortunately the leak was right up against the concrete, almost inside the wall. A local pool guy was nice enough to give me a bunch of free advice and he suggested I just cap the line rather than spend the thousands of bucks it would cost to have the concrete chipped out and the pipe repaired. I ran this by a.tramp and he didn't love the idea. I didn't either, so after some searching I found a slip fitting that extended inside the wall and allowed me to connect the new pipe. 50 bucks in materials and back in business.

oh meant to ask this question earlier. should i clean filter (cartridges) before or after i deal with algae? (and pls god not both bc going out of town Friday for 5 days)

Both. Also, reoccurring black algae “could be” a sign that you are ready for a re-plaster. It burrows deep. So deep that sometimes the only solution is to chip out the old and start new.

As well, if your plaster is old & deteriorating, it is easier for algae, especially black algae, to get a foothold.

    Have a great trip!

I’ve read that getting shit that’s been in ocean or lake in pool can cause black algae. My pool is about 10 foot from a lake. Fun!

Is it a 48 or 52 inch high pool? In most cases the 52 will be high enough to fit permit requirements as long as your ladder can be removed or secured above the top rails of the pool.

To add here, if you want to try & treat it without draining you can take a 3in tab and scrub it over the affected areas and brush vigorously before & after. You can also spot shock with a 78% cal hypo or try a product called black Algaetrine by Applied Biochemist. If you go the route of black algaetrine then make sure you follow the instructions

It is such a problem that an actual tool has been made for the holding of tab & scrubbing. Or else, your hands will look like they have been worked over by a food processor when done. And still might.

See that’s what I thought and even in their handout they gave to me explains what I need to do it says, If the pool walls are 48” tall and solid walled and smooth sided it will suffice as a barrier, plus I will be removing the steps on the ladder every night, now he says they no longer go by that. I’m just afraid I won’t be able to put my pool up this year. My pool is 52” tall.

God bless the mainboard, I had no idea this thread was a thing until I searched for pool to see if there were knowledgeable people here.

We bought a home in July last year in southern arizona with a pool. House/pool is about 10 years old. Already replaced filters, two actuators that had packrats chew through the electrical cords, and the impeller that was breaking apart. Pool guy today hears some high pitch noise coming from the pump and tells me it's not the impeller (duh) and could be a bearing going bad....may die next week or next year. Any recs on pumps? Looking online, prices seem to vary wildly. The one that is currently installed is a single speed Hayward.

Not sure it qualifies as snobby. We bought in peak pandemic when housing supply was awful and know we won’t be out here for more than 5 years. But god damn do you need a pool for these summers in the desert.

Here’s some Hayward porn for you tramp.

I had a 1.25 single speed pump I inherited when I bought our house three years ago. It died last weekend so I just had a new Variable speed Pentair installed yesterday and it’s such a better pump.

It was about $1300 after I did some haggling.

I've just dealt with black algae. Treated it and I (made my son) scrubbed the shit out of pool walls. It's all off or light gray now. I'm about to leave town for 5 days so won't be able to check on it. Guy at Leslie's advised me to throw 3 lbs of shock in it right before I leave. Do you concur? Also should I leave pump running or go back to normal. Pool is 18/20k-ish gallons

    TIA

I would love to see a 3.0 HP Pentair Intelliflo VSF on there but not sure you have the room to put it there without a significant reworking of the plumbing. Also, not sure if it would communicate seamlessly with your automation if it is a Hayward control.

All of my shit is Hayward, except my heat pump which is Pentair. When the first thing I have that dies that isn't covered by the home warranty (from the purchase of the home, expiring this October), I'm having a.tramp out to hook me up with a Pentair setup.

Yeah I used the home warranty for the impeller and of course it expires July 1 and my pump is going to explode probably mid July.

I would say that is 100% fine & make sure you but a good amount right over the areas that had black algae. Run the pump 24/7 while you’re away as well just to give some additional protection. You’re really only adding a # more than you regularly should so it will be a good choice.
