Firmware upgrade on a network switch. Pretty standard but I did it remotely and it didn’t come back online. Had to wait till someone got there to physically hook up to it so I could resolve it.
I'm leader of an organization, and I love my organization, but work still sucks and I look forward to going home at the end of the day like everyone else. Here's some things that ruin my day: --earbuds going out in the middle of a bike ride --Having to smile and nod when coworkers bring up god in relation to real-ass problems because god is pretend --Needing to shit at work because there's no bidet like at home --resetting the router
I know it doesn’t make sense compared to market returns but that’s why I want to pay off my house as quickly as possible. If shit hit the fan I don’t want to owe anybody anything.
Back in the olden times of hotswap drives and back up tapes I deleted an entire database then had to drive 3 hours to the store with a restored backup to reinstall on the server. Nothing like a 6 hour drive to sweat over having a job or not. And people noticed that shit believe you me.
Seems to happen to everyone in this field at some point or another. Thankful I didn’t get canned but helped give me a push to start looking while I still have a job and there’s no pressure.
We try to make at least a few extra mortgage payments per year as that’s our only current debt. Tax refunds always go to it, usually if we get a work bonus/raise it’ll go to it, that sort of thing. It kinda sucks, but whatever.
Most fun I ever had working was as an umpire for 9U to 12U travel baseball. Tossing those asshole coaches and parents to the parking lot when you inevitably encountered them was a phenomenal perk of the job. If I could make a decent living umpiring I’d probably do that. Or maintain the fields at the sports complex. Or work the zamboni at its ice rinks.
The best thing I learned that day, was what my boss said when I got back. “Mistakes happen, how you react after making one matters more. You’re reaction of telling us what happened and putting it the time/effort to fix it was what we look for.”. Now that I manage the department that’s my outlook and how I manage my people.
My Dad did this on the side for a bit. Was hands down his favorite part as well. Doing a full tournament weekend could make some fucking bank.
Yeah my biggest mistake was not telling someone immediately but my pride wanted to cover my ass before anyone noticed. I’ve always owned up to mistakes. Appreciate constructive criticism and do my best to improve. I’ve worked with guys who make excuse after excuse and they are the absolute worst.
For sure. 20 years ago we were getting $50 for home plate and $35 for the field. I loved it when my partner cancelled so I could keep his cut too. It was a really fun way to earn money in HS/college.
I also recently deleted the script that runs 25% of our reporting with no viable back up. That was a fun day. I had that back about 5 minutes before I got an IM from my boss “So the report batch…”, haha.
I understand this mentality, but I've run some companies that were by no means small - could be brought to their knees by the loss of one employee. Culture is everything - and the second you forget it, you find out very fast.
the christianity and homosexuality is such nostalgia fuel back when people on this board would argue against gay marriage, and how social acceptance of gay people would lead to huge negative consequences, etc
Did not read the thread so I am sorry if this has been posted. Waking up and knowing I need to shit then attempting to shit, but not really fully taking (or leaving in this case) said shit. Get in shower and the second I start to dry off the shit that was so shy minutes earlier decides that now is the time. Feel like I need to start the entire day over, but I don't have time to take another shower after the second shitting attempt. Overall, I have a nice life.
I watched my dad work 35 years in a white collar job, retire, get diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and have his life be worse than awful over the last ten years. He will die in the worst possible way by withering away mentally and physically sometime over then next 5 years. Makes a guy question the whole thing.
Are beer cans not recyclable in Tennessee/LA/Buffalo? What recycling facility accepts grocery bags and not aluminum cans?
Pretty much same - part of my waking up and getting ready playlist. No idea what the lyrics are aside from "astronaut in the ocean" - which may be entirely due to it being the name of the song.
Had two friends/employees die from overdoses last night. Was at dinner and received phone calls letting me know. Also, Lauren (pornstar Dakota Skye) that I knew somewhat well overdosed. I'm just going to get blackout today and try to not think about it.
Sorry for your losses. Not knowing their situations, but coke cut with fentanyl has been a big problem here in recent months. Scary shit. Hang in there man and never feel like you can’t reach out or vent here.
Thanks man. Honestly I can typically handle death pretty well - I can't handle the conversations with their family remotely well.
Moving out in a few weeks. But this happened to me again. Went to put out my recycling and saw a bag full of grocery bags. And a plastic trash bag full of recyclables sitting in the recycling bin. Went and put the grocery bags in my apartment so I can return them to a proper collection bin. The recycling bin was full on my floor. So I went to the big one downstairs. And went to go take the filled trash bag down there to empty it into the recycling dumpster. And when I do that? I see another filled plastic trash bag full of recyclables. People are so fucking stupid. Simple instructions posted everywhere. Makes me want to put a big red sign over every recycling bin. But I know it wouldn’t help and I’m not gonna be that guy. Just so sick of people doing the bare minimum and thinking they are saving the planet or some shit when in fact they are ruining an already flawed process because plastic recycling is mainly a sham
why does it bother you so much if it’s just a sham bro just chuck your cans and bottles in the regular garbage chute when the recycling bin is full like the rest of us
The landscapers in my neighborhood will start using loud ass blowers at like 8am (my neighbor has them blow leaves every day of the week) - also the tree trimming and street cleaning is early as hell. There is seemingly zero coordination amongst the landscaping schedule for each house as there is something making noise every morning.
Yesterday I had to go a little ways out of town to buy something from let go. Went into work early. Left early. Got there. Smooth transaction and so far the quality of the purchased item works just fine. but on the way back i needed gas. And my windshield needs a good scrubbing. Get to the first gas station. No wiper fluid. Okay there are a few more on the way. Get my gas and head on. second spot. Barely any fluid but both wipers have their sponges ripped off. Fucks sake. Okay there is one right by my apartment. go out of my way home to work out. Forgot my gym shoes. its fucking late at this point. get to the last place and it’s closed. But you can still use the pumps and windshield cleans. It’s catty corner on an intersection that no one really goes through this late at night. im at this red light for at least 5 minute. a few minute later and a couple of cars pull up behind me. a few minutes later I just say fuck it and drive through the light. Woop Woop. Two cars back was a cop car. Pulls me over right in the gas station. i explain the situation. We watch the light as it doesn’t change. He runs my info and lets me off with a warning. I pull up to the pump. the wiper stations are completely empty. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK Cop gets out his car. What the fuck is wrong with you, son.
