In my experience, this is a good sign. If you failed the assessment they'd either not get back to you for a bit while they explore other options or you'd just never hear from them.

Watch what they do, not what they say.

Kind of what I was thinking. Only thing they told me after the interview was they'd make a decision this week. The I got the assessment the this email

I have an initial interview this Wednesday. I'm currently working remotely in St. Martin for the month (with my boss's approval). I don't plan on just casually tossing that fact out there but if it comes up, is there any reason to not mention it?

Nice, is it hard to find a place for that long or do you own half the island?

fwiw, I was previously at a very flexible job where I was wfh 60% of the time at least about ten years ago. Interviewing at a perfect position almost perfect location at the time and I went through the team and then the manager. I asked him if they have wfh flexibility once, he tap danced. I tap danced like Sammy Davis Jr, nicely threw the question back. He did not answer it directly, starts into this collaboration speech. Finally I said yeah I agree, but this is now the third time I am asking the question could you please answer it with a yes or no. I don’t think he appreciated that, answer was no and I never got the job.

Point is, I had two young kids, that flexibility was insanely valuable to me. Ultimately, thank god I didn’t get that job because they are a complete fucking shit show. I know this now because I’m a consultant for them.

Had a busser interviewee that showed up in a tux - poor kid that said off the bat that he didn't own a suit so this was the closest he could come up with.

Worked for me for 4 years.

It was an offer. Just got the updated one bc the initial offer was 6k less than I currently make. Negotiated for a 10% raise from my current salary + quarterly commission. Hours are way better but I'm losing PTO but whatever I never used it anyway

Thanks for the advice. I was in the same boat as another poster where I don't have direct reports and have been stuck in the same position for a couple years and am effectively blocked from moving up. Figured the job market now is a good as ever so I fluffed my title (put a description next to it due to it being an internal title). Got so many call backs that I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Have a potential few more interviews lined up but they wouldn't be able to beat this one's compensation + hours

    Legalese question:

If I signed a two-year no-compete clause as part of my letter of salary in Virginia and I am laid off by that company, am I still bound my that two-year no-compete?

Separate question: why is it ok to enforce non-competes on people that aren’t in sales or essential employees from an intellectual property standpoint?

That's a pretty complex answer - which industry?

They can't restrict you from making a living so unless they can prove - and would be willing to go to court to do so - that it damages their business interests, you should be fine.

But IP infringement, etc. is a different story.

Non competes in California are a joke unless IP infringement comes into play.

Virginia is a little more complicated.

Well I was in marketing with said company and got a pretty good working knowledge of how that company operates, who their clients are, how they market and sell the services to the clients. And what I am thinking of suggesting to my current company as a “golden ticket” idea would be a direct attempt at killing their business.

What I mean is that part of what they do - which is sell COR training to business - is what I would suggest to my current company to add as one of the services they offer their clients. I don’t want to suggest it if it would violate a legally enforceable no-compete though. Not about to go on the unemployment line for this by any means.

And actually my internet lawyering says if they did bring a case against me I’d stand a pretty good chance of winning due to breach of contract. They were supposed to give me a two-weeks notice for termination. I got less than a week when they notified me I was being laid off.

Currently work in IT on the engineering/support side but recently decided I want something new. I have an in at a well known great company doing tech sales. I have zero sales background which no doubt hurts me but my connection is gassing me up big and I have the technical background. I have my first call next week with a senior member on their team which I hope will then lead to a legit interview. I've been advised to add a sales spin to my role and experience any way I can which I can do. I've been on the purchasing side and have been in plenty of pitches and negotiations with sales folks so it's not a world I'm totally unfamiliar with.

Those in sales have any other advice?

Is this specifically a Sales Engineer role?

Not sure exact title but told I’d be working between the customers and developers. I’m probably jumping the gun in the thread until I have my first call just nervous cause it sounds like an amazing opportunity and I’m very ready to move on from current company.

A key to Tech Sales is being able to showcase your ability to speak/translate both languages- End User & Development Teams. Be that bridge between the two.

Sales in general is mostly about being communicative, listening well, and asking questions. Do that and let the chips fall as they will.

reddit and search SAS interview. I only know this because I follow /sales and that's like the hottest sales job in tech at the moment, or so it seems on that thread. Regardless, not to get stuck in the weeds but every post related to that process seems like genuinely good information. Also reassuring in that if someone posts some bullshit it's down voted to oblivion.

Also would you be technical sales as a support engineer role or straight sales role? I don't know all companies and services, I only know my niche but highly recommend straight sales role all day if you are up for it. I'd absolutely hate life in a sales support role, but that's just me personally talking. There's a combination of things I hate about that job but the three biggest things I hate. 1. Customers challenge your knowledge constantly and they don't know shit half the time. 2. You're charged with making a false promise work in concept. 3 This really depends on the field but there is so much fucking minutia they have to commit to memory because of 1. Straight sales you still need to know a bunch, but not near the level and if you produce, at least double the compensation.

Finally, I currently work for a business partner but one thing I think most sales people are very good at is not shutting the fuck up. I don't mean it in a bad way either, they can smoothly transition through topics and then steer the ship back when needed. Active listening is equally as important and I think the good ones learn that as well.

Last item and I will hang up and listen. My view is entirely as I have lived it through IT, I realize there may be other world views. That being said, make sure you talk to the people in your perspective field and more than one because there are tons of douche lords in that sector, as you well know through sitting in the meetings you referenced above.

Has anyone successfully accepted a new job offer, been counter-offered by their current company and been happy staying?

I work in information security, and I am a big fan of my current company but it has also been the only one I’ve known. Biggest issue is pay, and efforts to gain a salary suitable to my title/experience/location has been lackluster. Forward movement is also unclear as this position/department was built for me and any progress is determined by what I have to push for.

New job offer is higher pay, smaller company but one that seems to have a better idea for progress.

Take the new job. Don’t look back. There’s a reason you’re looking around at new opportunities. If they truly valued you, they would’ve given you a raise without having their hand forced.

    Just my personal opinion/ :twocents:

Do what you need to do, but don't accept an offer if it is your intention that you'll accept a counteroffer and stay. If you're going to accept a counter, have the conversation with your current employer before accepting.

If you accept and then back out a week or so ahead of your start date, you're fucking the company that was courting you. They've eliminated their other candidates and prepared/planned for your start.

Understood and makes sense. I was weary of letting my current company know before accepting the offer but your point certainly brings up a critical point.

The offer was just extended an hour ago, and I do intend to negotiate the salary, so official acceptance is a couple of days off anyway.

I actually have two friends, both hold CISSPs and both hold jobs in the same unique niche in that they create, or have created their own world. Both have gone through what you are and stayed. For one of them it was more your second thought, the idea of how to progress that drove him nuts. Mapped out a plan, they listened, he got a raise and was happy. I’d think you would have to weigh how receptive your leadership is and how big an increase you would like.

I recommend doing it at least once if you can afford it. It was amazing for me.

I would only entertain a counter offer to get the new possible employer to put more money on the table.

You can nearly guarantee that you won't see another raise if you accept the counter from the current place. Unless you're willing to stay at that pay rate till retirement, take the new gig.
