Our Copper dog is not doing great. I am not sure if he has sat down once today and was coughing something fierce this morning although nothing came up. Concerning is that was the beginning of the end for both of my previous 2 coonhounds with their barrell-chests. Am furious with our vet right now though. Been a great customer for 8 years with 2 dogs the entire time and they told me they are too busy to see him, go to the ER vet….
Sorry to hear that dude. Fwiw Covid has had the effect of people adopting more pets, and paying more attention to the ones they have. It's hard to quantify, but the animal hospital I work at has been the most slammed that we ever have been. We've been having a lot of long time clients call to get same day appointments because of blockages, fractures, seizing, etc. Normally we would see them on an urgent care basis, but every day we have a fully booked slate, and the doctors simply don't have enough time. It really sucks to have to refer them elsewhere, and I hate it, but our hands our tied. It's the same at every other clinic in our area, we are just completely slammed. The vet industry as a whole is stretched and overburdened atm. I hope everything works out with your pup, and it's not the beginning of the end.
No I get it about the vets being busy, that does nothing about the frustration though. Looks like it is not same issue that got my last 2 Redbones but not out of the woods yet. He is on IVs and will check in an hour if he is better or if he gets an overnight ER stay. He has a bowel obstruction that is causing him serious dehydration, comfort, fatigue and gas. Really hoping the IVs can work magic in 2 hours time.
I did one year then changed vets. New one said absolutely not when I asked if they'd recommend them. Switched to the pills again.
My uncle tried calling 5 different vets last week when his old dog was ready to go. None had time to put her to sleep. She ended up dying in his barn on her bed.
Vet was surprised he turned the corner so quickly considering the condition he arrived in. Recommend leaving IV port in and monitoring him overnight with a follow-up in the morning where they will either remove port or IV him again throughout the day depending on his condition. Sucralfate 3 times a day to coat throat & stomach and Doxycycline 2 times a day to reduce fever. He is currently laying down for the first time today.
Also, about as much bipartisan support as any issue in Texas could get and in comes hot-wheels Abbott with the veto. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jun/22/texas-governor-dogs-bill-veto “State senate bill 474, dubbed the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, aimed to ban the use of heavy chains to keep dogs tethered. The bill had bipartisan support in the legislature, passing the house 83-32 and the senate 28-3.” *edit: please do not drag me for posing from The Guardian. I have no idea what kind of publication it is, it was on my google main page along with other Dallas & Texas news.
Posted in this thread when one of mine was seemingly dying (has rebounded phenomenally once we got the meds dialed in) our vet was like yeah we can see him in like 2 weeks...had we waited 24 hours he probably would have died.
I am pretty sure Copper would be a goner right now if had not gotten IVs when he did. Not a great solution really. If you pass up on new clientele, it can get lean when customers matriculate. But if you book yourself so full that you can never see your clients when they really need you. The optics are just poor. “we are going to charge you an absolute premium for routine stuff that only we can do if you ever want to be able to take your dog to be boarded or get groomed but when you really need us, sorry.”
Thank you. He ate this morning. Last night he would not touch his food so I had to hid his medicine in a hot dog. Wife is taking him back in for follow-up at 8:45 and they will either remove IV port or give him some more liquid life.
My anxious pup who is terrified of storms, heavy wind, and pine cones that hit the roof…tried to dog her way to freedom during a storm while I was at work…yes that’s blood…any advice to help her anxiety when I’m not home? Loud music (relaxing) usually helps but it didn’t seem to help much today as it was still on when I got home
just an idea but I am no expert, she might need a safe space. Like a little place where she is always left alone. Under a bed or in a little space in the basement.
It seems like she likes that closet where the incident occurred today as we’ve noticed shoes moved around before. I might try a small enclosed dog house of some sort or small crate with blankets on it
Ours we give cbd also, worked wonders for fireworks just find a local store, not Amazon (anti Amazon)
Scheduled Dodger a one way ticket for tomorrow morning to the big park in the sky. She's 15 and I'm going to miss her dearly. Everyone please give some extra love to your dogs tomorrow morning for me.
Sorry texasraider . 15 is a lot of years with a big old dog. Going to be a hard one to replace I am sure.
may look handsome now, just can't see his shaved back end from hot spots. Spent the weekend up north, washed and dried him each time out of the water and still got them
Thanks for the support guys. The vet said her blood pressure was extremely low so she probably wouldn’t have made it another couple of weeks. She went peacefully and now I’m just trying to stay busy.
I’ve never been as productive in my life as when we had to let our family dog go, it’s impossible to just sit and watch tv when you feel like this. so sorry for your loss, you will see her everywhere in your house for a few months and it is very painful. But the joy that they bring to us during their lives is worth it.
Our pup suddenly turned sick last night. She acts a little weird like that sometimes so thought it was just one of those periodic episodes. This morning I took her outside and she collapsed on the ground, had to hold her up to poop. We rushed to the ER and she was out of it and breathing incredibly hard - tests showed she had a mass, kidney failure, and extremely low blood pressure. We put her down this afternoon. She’s an old lady, almost 17, but she seemed in good health and we do a full CBC every six months which always came up great. Just shocked how fast things went downhill and thought we’d have more time to prepare for things. Hug your doggos
These are the type of assholes that give pits a bad name. There probably isn’t another breed that would be subjected to the his shit. Fuck that asshole. Thoughts ? I for one think he gets off light. this lead to this
