Kamoneji lunch reservations booked (because they were already booked for dinner 2 weeks out - must be good!). Excited to try legit soba and then drink it down at Fremont brewery.

I know CR is popular in this thread. What are the top towns/spots?

I'm thinking of the Nicoya Peninsula, specifically Santa Teresa and Montezuma. Would also like to make it down to Corcovado.

I spent a week in an Airbnb in Pochote and drove all over the Nicoya peninsula a few years ago. Its a pretty interesting drive to get there but its very cool, plenty to see and do. Montezuma is definitely a surfer town with a lot of US expats. Strongly encourage it.

That's nice. It was a pain in the ass. I uploaded my negative test and had a hard copy. I had been up like 28 straight hours and I left the printed results sitting at the table at the airport after we landed when they initially check your paperwork. Showed up to the hotel and they asked for my negative test. Luckily you can just pull it up on your phone. Otherwise, I would just be heading back home.

Seeing places put restrictions back in place for the Delta variant is disconcerting. Not much you can do but wait it out though, I guess.

We’re setting off on a 3 week road trip to San Diego and back from Ohio tomorrow. The plan is to go Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, Old faithful, Yosemite, Redwoods on the way there. Staying for around 5 days and going painted desert, petrified forest, Grand Canyon, maybe Denver on the way back.

The plan is to drive 10 hrs or so a day and my 2 oldest kids are 21 and 18 so we’ve got 4 drivers including myself and wife….wish us luck….

Edit: the highlight is July 5th tickets with my 75 yr old Dad for Padres-Nationals. And staying in La Jolla for 5 days

Wife wants to do a long weekend in Boston for her birthday in August. Going to a Sox game Saturday night but besides that nothing else planned Thurs - Sat. Any must do's/must sees there? I've only ever been there for a couple sporting events so didn't see much of the city. Also looking for any great restaurant or bar recommendations.

Santa Teresa is great. It's a jumper plane then a 45 minute drive from the airport, so it's pretty off the beaten path.

Beaches are nice, tons of ex-pats from all over Europe and South America there. All of their restaurants are really good
I was pretty surprised by how good the food was.

Going back in September. Want to go to ST, but wife doesn't want to be 2 flights away from child. So doing Nosara which is like 2.5 hours south of Tamarindo

We did this trip in 2015. The key is to haul ass the first 17-18 hours straight to Rapid City SD and then decompress once you get there.

The Rapid City to Yellowstone trek is easy. The Yellowstone to Redwoods is not.

Definitely recommend driving through the Great Salt Desert from Salt Lake City to Northern Nevada. It’s otherworldly.

I think the plan is the more southern route to SF, check in is 4pm July 1st at La Jolla. I think the last leg down the CA coast could be pushing it.

This is good info. I need to do some research as my gf just booked a flight to Naples for the end of august. She wants to do coastal Italy for the most part.

I’ll be flying in to Rome most likely. I’ve already been there, Florence and Venice, so it’ll be nice to experience the coast.

We skipped Redwood and Yosemite, unfortunately, because we didn’t have enough time. We went straight from Teton to SF.

If you have four drivers, I wouldn’t stop anywhere you don’t actually want to see something.

On the Ohio to SD stretch, the 17-18 hours isn’t “that” bad because everyone is excited. You hit Badlands/Wall Drug on the way into Rapid City and you’re good.

Amalfi Coast south of Naples is a straight shot down the coast by train. It’s really easy.

We didn’t use the trains in Rome, so not sure about that stretch.

For me, the Cinque Terra is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It’s great.

Can you break down how many days you would like to spend at each spot? I almost have a feeling you have too many things you are trying to fit in and it wont be enjoyable because you will be spending more time driving than enjoying each spot.

Nothing that stands out sharply for me, its been a while

Lisbon- Cool city, SF vibes, Think the hostel I stayed at closed during COVID but on Hostel world there looks to be alot of good choices.
Peniche - went there for surfing good waves to learn on. More dune like beaches not as pretty as Lagos.
Lagos - Top City Hostel & Suites, more modern place w/ small pool on the roof and good views. Cool beach town reminds me of the California coast. Feel like the southern coast of Portugal is a nice place to visit besides just Lisbon and Porto.

Morrocco only stayed in Fez, most of the interesting stuff was architectural and going through the local "farmers market", and local shops. We stayed in a Riad hotel which was cool with a roof top patio to overlook the city while we ate.

The entire road trip, start date end date and whatever is a must inside that timeframe so like:

Start june 20th, have to be in SD by July 1st till July 6th have to be home by July 12th. (Just made this up).

Leaving here in about 30 minutes, check into La Jolla July 1st, check out July 7th, my wife has to be back to work the 14th, me the 19th.

Edit: The only must is 4th of July party at my sisters and Padres game the 5th.

You are pretty short days in the front end, don't think you would have time for Yosemite/Redwoods if you want to go to SF

My thoughts in order of your trip.

-There is badlands national park prior to hitting Rapid City, not too far off the highway either. It's different my cousin loved it I thought it was fine depends on your flavor.

    - Id go take a look at Devils Tower, only like a 10 minute detour on the highway, cool rock formation in the middle of nowhere. Easy site to look at and jam back on the road.

Going through the Bighorns from Devils Tower to Cody is a nice little drive

-We went into Yellowstone through Cody, Wyoming. They have a night rodeo every night in June in the summer, didn't go but it looked cool when we drove by. It also has good reviews on google. Only 2 hours outside the center of yellowstone if you want to stop for the night.

-From there you are going to the Tetons, thats got plenty of write up shit about it.

-I've seen people throw out Salt Lake City as a next spot but I'll throw out something different, Id go the direct route from Jackson to Lake Tahoe, if you want a side detour off that id recommend taking the 93 up to the 75 going through Stanley Idaho and the Sawtooths then coming out Ketchum Idaho/ Sun Valley and back onto your route.

Personally though you are short days in the front end so I'd just bust ass to Lake Tahoe from Jackson and spend a night there, can do some a quick hike to see the lake or hang out by the beach and then jam back on 80. Auburn Ale house is a nice stop off of 80 in the city of Auburn past Tahoe.

80 is direct to SF but honestly I'd throw out SF too, I would just book it down the 5 and get to La Jolla. But your choice on what you want to do when you get to Sacramento and where you are time wise. Driving highway 1 along the coast is wayyy to long. but a happy medium between the 5 and highway 1 is to take highway 101 down. (Better views than the 5, more direct than the 1)

*I've down a northern road trip similar to the one you are doing from the east coast and I live in California.

Thanks!!! Yeah I agree the order was to go south on the way (70 to Denver, AZ sites and then SD) I switched it last minute thinking everyone would be ready to go home on the way home…so I may have fucked up. The redwoods and Yosemite might be wishful thinking, but we’ll see how it plays out.

Mainly this is probably our last big family vacation and I’m just excited to get to spend time with my adult daughters and my soon to be adult son. I told them good or bad we’re going to have a story forever.

I'd see where you are time wise/day wise when you get to Sacramento and make decisions there. You could take the 99 or 5 south to Merced and jump over to Yosemite and back.

You may want to check on Yosemite availability because I've heard that they're still taking reservations just to get in the park. To my knowledge you can't just drive in yet.

Hwy1 is a great drive but not fast by any means (I live off of exit 433b)

With what we were paying to do Maui and Kaui in December just to stay in Airbnb’s, we decided to cancel that trip and instead do a December trip to Venice and Barcelona. We are staying in very nice hotels for a fraction of the cost. And bonus, no absurd car rental fees. Covid don’t fail me now.
