It's been unseasonably cool and a shit ton of rain here for my bermuda to take off. Got a chance to mow the front low a couple days a go to let it hopefully absorb some uv rays to kick it off instead of a semi dormant/grow that its been in. My backyard all the neighbors drain into mine so its been a damn swamp and my french drains can only do so much. Most of it is still dormant but when it comes in it'll be lush as fuck, until then poa annua came in thick af this year, worst I've had it since moving in this house. Sprayed some Revolver a few days ago before mowing to start the kill on it .
Ha! If I had the time to cut every day or two, I would. Unfortunately that isn't the case. To keep the growth manageable I spray a growth regulator. I haven't gone to PGR yet this year (because of leveling this weekend) and had to mow 4 times last week. That's a bit much for me. The lower you mow the more it requires. Mowing is probably one of the best things you can do for your lawn.
Probably have asked in here before, but when herbicides say apply between 50-85 degrees, does that mean the temp when applying? I need to spray some T Zone on some creeping charlies, but I dont see a high below 90 for the next 10-14 days and doubt it drops for awhile.
So it’s raining all week in Georgia. Probably going to force me to go over a week without mowing. Do you suggest I move the height up on my mower and gradually cut back down shorter?
Bermuda, right? If yes, either do that or go a notch lower than normal and live with the scalped look for a few days. Then raise it up and keep on moving. That may not work particularly well if your grass is super thick and now very long, though.
Always wondered why the US Ag department didn't put cities on the hardiness zone maps. Well tonight I found one when I was looking for a high rez copy. https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/Images/All_states_halfzones_poster_rgb_300dpi.pdf
What are y’all’s recs on battery edger/trimmer/blower? Have corded electric tools now and am getting sick of dealing with the extension cord. Are the 18V ryobi powerful enough or do I need to make the jump to 40V plus? There’s too many options.
I have about 3,000 sqft of Bermuda lawn. I have the Ryobi 18V trimmer/edger and the blower - works perfect for my purposes. I also have the 40V Ryobi mower. Gets the job done for me.
Not really. I do have a green works corded trimmer that I could use the trimmer attachment from. But I was leaning Ryobi for the price point and if I bought any tools in the future I could use batteries.
Had some sod laid a few weeks back and the watering has helped it take. Overall looking pretty healthy, what am I looking for to know it’s okay to mow?
Gotcha. I use Milwaukee M18 and M12 fuel tools around my house so it was an obvious pickup. Bonus points for the yard tools performing very well.
This depends on your needs, IMO. 18V Ryobi should be fine for grass clippings and smaller leaves. Large leaves or multiple larger trees and you will probably want something stronger.
Yeah. It would be just for clippings off sidewalk/driveway. I have a corded blower that I can use if I need a little more juice. I am just sick of dealing with cords and just want grab and go tools. Just need enough power to handle st. Augustine.
Sent in my soil test two weeks ago tomorrow. Today they acknowledge receipt. I’m on pins waiting for my results. So spoiled by Amazon.
Just mowed for the first time in 2.5 weeks Been raining so much and I've been out of town on weekends, damn it was long Cold beer tastes so good 'testing' the sprinklers
big ups to fertilome's 24D trimec product that I posted about a few page ago. I was pleased with it in the backyard (bermuda), enough to apply in the front (St Augustine). Came back after vacation, and here is what a moderate application did to horseherb.
Grass seed mix question: About 2 months ago, I wanted to replace some dead spots in my yard so I bought a grass seed / fertilizer mix. Spread it around, waterered on a regular basis, etc. 8 weeks later, most of those spots have a densely packed small white ballish clumps stuff covering the ground where it think enough that grass hasn't grown through. I thought by now it would have broken down into the soil but it hasn't. Would it be perlite? I know that is common in garden and such but I wouldn't think it would be included in a seed/mulch mix. A) Is it some other compound that would be mixed with grass seed? B) Shouldn't 8 weeks with plenty of water be plenty of time to break down a fertilizer?
yeah, but since I have no irrigation it means I have to move a sprinkler 10+ times across 2 spigots for adequate coverage.
my backyard is a nightmare. it gets little light and my dogs run around a lot ripping up my grass and leaving fucking dirt patches everywhere how fix plz
Cut down or limb up trees to raise the canopy. Get rid of your dogs, replace them with kids. Glyphosate current "yard". 3 times, 2-3 weeks between applications. Bring in skid steer and possibly dirt/sand depending on where you live and what you're planting. Regrade. Lay down sod. Grass will never grow in full shade. Very few plants do.
Saw the neighborhood chemical guy putting down fertilizer yesterday morning, which prompted me to put down my own. Got a nice, light rain this morning to water it in. Praise him. Finally got this yard under control this year in year 4 at this house, after 2yrs of chemicals and taking down three trees. Best it’s ever looked.
after the 3 days we had over 100 degrees here in Oregon, I have finally given up the watering battle for the summer and going to let it die back. Shit sucks, fucking climate change
Anyone here try to mix two different types of grass? I think due to the lack of shade and the fact my yard faces south (both somewhat slope that direction too), at times I need a little tougher grass. So I was thinking of over seeding some tall turf fescue that’s supposed to hold up better than bluegrass. Blades look pretty thin so don’t think it’d be noticeable (already have that thick fescue in some spots unfortunately)
I technically have 3. St Augustine, Bermuda and Buffalo because someone messed up and overseeded with it (?). However, we don't intentionally mix seeds/overseed like you guys do.
Went and picked up an angle grinder and sharpened my own blades, surprisingly easy. I was/am worried that I might be throwing the blades out of balance even though I tried to level each blade as best as I could just by balancing them on a nail. Mowed 4 acres without issue so I’ll assume it’s ok until I blow up a spindle or three
Anybody know if octane really matters on ethanol free gas for a mower? A gas station 2 blocks from me now has ethanol free gas but it’s 91 octane. The other station I have been getting ethanol free gas from is 10 miles away but is 87.
Turns out rain every day makes me hate st Augustine grass a little less. however all this rain has washed some areas out due to poor work by our builders and I’m having to pack some soil in and will have to get a few sod plugs.
I’ve been battling crab grass for weeks because my neighbor does the bare minimum. Has weeds knee high that quickly spread across the property line. Today he put his house up for sale!
I've gotten a little lazy pulling weeds since it's been so hot, and have a few areas where crab grass and basket grass (I think is what it is called) have taken hold. It doesn't get out of the 80s at night, is pretty much 100% humidity, and rains every day. Is there anything I can put down at this stage in the summer, or should I suck it up and hand pull and wait until it "cools" down in October (which isn't a guarantee)?
