shocked, shocked I tell you, that a guy who self-branded as Uncle Hotep has a shitty opinion on a black woman.
I struggle with the “rules are rules” from the hypocritical leaders with a rampant corruption and bribery problem doing this https://www.thenation.com/article/world/tokyo-olympics-bribery-scandal/
I remember there being a story like just a few years after the Athens Olympics about how bad of shape the facilities were in that were used during those games. It was only like 4-6 years later and it was pretty shocking. I'm not sure if this is your point but they get a ton of money poured into them (and in turn someone makes a lot) and not much in the long term is gained. I love the Olympics too but that was a really disappointing revelation for me.
the only venue Atlanta has like that is the Tennis venue. Everything else was either done correctly (private money involved) or was intentionally temporary to save money (which the IOC chief at the time did not like at all). Turner Field, Ga Tech Swimming, Equestrian all still prominent. Ga Dome got solid use.
And thats because they decided to build it in the center of a park designed as a shrine to the Confederacy and the KKK....while the ATL metro area (and Stone Mountain neighborhood specifically) were moving in the polar opposite direction.
The Congress Center hosts a shit ton of events to this day. Pretty sure the beach they created for Beach Volleyball is now used for Movie Filming. Know Hunger Games 2 was there. That Velodrome has to be gone too. All of Stone Mountain Park is going to be rehauled once Stacey Abrams beats Kemp. Marriott abandoned their resort there because of the obvious reasons.
Yep. The Argentina-Nigeria final was one of my favorite childhood sporting events behind the World Series and Masters.
This. Atlanta was one of the best hosted Olympics of all time because almost all of the venues were either temporary or went into construction with a permanent use ready to go afterwards.
the Olympics is literally always a loss for the host city/country with the exception of LA. it usually brings in billions and costs tens of billions. if we want to talk about being the most financially pragmatic then the only place the Olympics should ever be hosted is the US because we tend to have a lot of the infrastructure needed already on the ground and what isn't there is far less likely to be abandoned post-Olympics than practically anywhere else. the same could be said for the World Cup, frankly.
The world cup and olympics are a financial money pit at this point. Especially for countries that are building the supporting infrastructure from scratch and then abandoning it after a 3 week period.
It's a complete boondoggle slush fund where the only people who get rich are the IOC and FIFA. We just happily pay it every 4 years because SPORTS>>>Common Sense
All under the guise of "taking the sport to new frontiers or expanding the reach of the sport" There are ways to make both events financially stable, but they involve the same 8-10 countries hosting everything and a change in the way the sponsorship deals are split.
The Winter Olympics should rotate between Salt Lake City, China, and Canada. Summer should rotate between, wherever in the US wants to host, China, London, and a few other select places.
I think the London Olympics legacy was a net positive. But its also a megametropolis with a population core that fits the demand of the facilities that still remain. (The ideal host profile) the biggest eye sore is the development around the primary Stadium itself.
The World Cup in Brazil was a complete boondoggle. I'm too lazy at the moment to Post articles but if you really want to be disheartened, do some google searching on it. Tens/hundreds of millions poured into stadiums that were only used 3x, one of which is currently being used to park buses.
Barcelona too I think? I remember reading an article about how the olympics transformed the city into more of what it is today, including creating the beach front.
a lot of the Olympics have been profitable for the host nation, it’s a relatively recent phenomenon where some have been economic disasters
Reading about the tennis center led me to this.. Apparently just a pretty big abandoned stadium in Atlanta? Fran Tarkenton https://abandonedplaygrounds.com/20...tadium-is-something-from-the-post-apocalypse/
Also have to remember that some of those numbers are complete fabrications. There is 0% chance that Sochi, as the most expensive games ever (and Winter Games at that) was profitable.
Yea I posted drone footage of it itt. It held a few ATP events, remember it when Agassi was still good. But the event eventually died because most Americans don't like driving out to a Suburb in heavy traffic without any public transit options, let alone to a Shrine to the Confederacy. Then they moved the ATP up to Johns Creek and it failed too, for the same non-dixie reasons. Now they just do a makeshift stadium setup Downtown, like several Hard Court events. Which is where the Facility should have gone all along, but there were already too many Olympic events along the train corridor. Hands were tied and they went with Stone Mountain because it had a few other events already and the hotel space for all the visitors. And they could not put it in Cobb County because Cobb County refused to host any Olympic Events due to hating Gay and Lesbian People. The Atlanta Braves used all these data points and said "fuck me up fam".
What is that stadium looking thing they are building down there now Fran Tarkenton? In the vicinity of Turner Field. Looks kind of like a tennis stadium maybe
Georgia State's basketball arena. Looks nice. They built their new dorms adjacent to that (GaState used to have the Olympic Village then GaTech took it over), and then contracted with a bunch of mixed-used retail for the students. You can see a Publix going up on the other side of the Torch/Rings. Then you have the bar + restaurant district along Georgia Avenue in Summerhill. Would guess that will extend out to Hank Aaron Drive right there. They have a ton of potential to become a good G5 athletics program.
