Always respected your opinion on this stuff.

I read the entire thread the last couple of days. Learned some things I had questions about and got a little more confused on some others.

But I think the main thing for me right now is using things you and Russellin4885 preach, at least for now. Keep it simple, don't over think it, CICO, and stay disciplined. What I have been doing is working. So why change it now? My main goal has been to get in shape for Bonnaroo Labor Day Weekend. And I feel like I'm ready today. 63 more days. Also what TLAU would always say. Pussy is a hell of a motivator. Single again at 34 man. Shit.

I always felt high strung even when alcohol ruled my evenings, but my energy is through the roof these days. I'm going to the gym in the morning for my lifts and sometimes cardio. I don't eat before. I drink 2-4 quarts of water while there. I take two scoops of whey isolate with me and mix it up when I get in my car.

Diet wise I'm trying my best to eat meat, veggies, fruit, and greek yogurt. The air fryer for vegetables has been a game changer.

    Examples:

Yesterday I ate a peach and banana around 10am. Around 1pm I cooked one onion and squash in the air fryer with one teaspoon of avocado oil. Then I cooked roughly 1lb of crappie filets on aluminum foil in the air fryer with a little bit of oil to coat the foil.

Dinner was two ears of corn and a large cucumber.

Today I had my protein after lifting, and that's it. I've been up since 7am, and I'm not hungry.

And this is where I want to make sure my example from the last 36 hours is kosher. Now I feel like has been a very light food time frame for me. But I don't want to force food if I'm not hungry. Fat loss is my main goal. Obviously muscle gain too. Ive dropped 25 lbs in 8 weeks. My arms and shoulders are finally showing definition. Long way to go, but they've definitely been noticed by people on the lake these last few weekends.

No, I'm not keeping up with any macros before you chew me out. Trying not to get overwhelmed (bad word choice) or overthinking things. I'm trying to crush protein, but that's it. I usually smoke 5 lbs of boneless skinless chicken thighs once a week. That can last 3-5 days depending on the week. I skipped this week because I have fresh fish to eat.

I feel like there is plenty I'm leaving out here, but Ive already written a novel.

This is what you should be doing so great job there. When you’re starting in a healthier lifestyle it’s better to just create good, sustainable habits before getting into the minutia.

you’re making quality food choices with the fruit, veggies, and meat. You could probably stand to eat a little more, but focus more on creating habits before stressing over that. If you do want to start tracking macros I’d say get 1g of protein per pound of body weight each day. Don’t worry about carbs and fat yet and just track protein and hit that goal. That will do more for your physique than most things.

just keep up the good work and focus on those habits and structures to keep them happening

    Healthy breakfast ideas?

I normally go with an unsalted/unsweetened trail mix or cereal with banana. Can I do better? I want low fat, low sodium, and low sugar if I can stand it.

I usually make 3 days worth of overnight oats on Sunday and do avocado toast on seedy bread on the other 2 days for the week.

If you need something faster, trader joes has great oatmeal options that are low sugar. I like the cup with maple and brown sugar, and my wife likes the frozen puck of steel cut.

in a similar vein, I've started making these oatmeal balls recently, really easy and delicious, just pop a couple and you're good

Quick Cooking Oats - 3 cups
    Peanut Butter - 1/2 cup
    Ground Flaxseed - 1/2 cup
    Coconut Oil - 1/3 cup
Dried Dates (or paste if you can find it) - 1 cup (omit if you don't want the sugar, may need a little more pb or oil to help the balls stick together though)
    Cacao Powder - 2 tbsp

-Soak dates in warm water for 1 hour, then place dates in a food processor with enough water to cover and blend until a thick paste. Store leftovers in the fridge.

-In a large bowl, mix everything, then scoop out chunks with a tablespoon, forming into small balls (typically golf ball size)

-Bake balls in the oven at 400° for 10 minutes. Store in the refrigerator.

This is my favorite no-cook version

    INGREDIENTS
    2/3 cup creamy peanut butter
    1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    1 cup old fashioned oats
    1/2 cup ground flax seeds
    2 tablespoons honey

    INSTRUCTIONS

Combine all 5 ingredients in a medium bowl. Stir to combine. Place in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes so they are easier to roll. Roll into 12 balls.

Been working out consistently for about a year now and have really reached a point of frustration. I’m doing the exact same things I did about 4 years ago in terms of routines and diet yet I’m not even close to getting in the same shape I was back then. Then between family commitments and a week in Jamaica I didn’t work out for 3 weeks and put on a good 10 lbs over that timeframe. Just upped my workouts last week and started eating a lot less than usual and have worked off 3 bad lbs so far but I know I’m going to plateau soon. Getting older sucks.

I usually go a little lighter on the chocolate chips, but the honey is minimal and I think pb is a good fat. Oatmeal and flax are great for you. I guess if you'd rather eat bran flakes for all of your snacks, go for it

Hah! I don’t as at my best probably at around 42-43. Granted, I’m fighting genetics. My family has a tendency to put on weight and all 9 of us practically have the same body type. But then again, only me and one of my brothers actually work out. My sister is thin, too, but she starves herself.

our brains actually prefer the fuel they draw from fat stores which is what happens during IF until you eat again, you're more focused by not eating in the morning

Not yet. I thought about that but I’m ambivalent about using T supplements because once you start that therapy you basically need to stay on it in perpetuity because it knocks out your body’s natural ability to make more.

you're at an age where it's good to know where you stand, if your natural levels are diminishing there are other ways to work on increasing them through diet and changes to exercise. i'll probably have mine checked yearly with my bloodwork from now on.

    There’s no real conclusive data.

if anyone is worried about low T, get it checked. You may be taking it for the rest of your life, but it’s better than feeling lethargic, low libido, low energy, depressed, etc.

My wife had a nutritionist friend tell her to focus breakfast more on protein due to workouts we do so that is generally what I do

    I usually have

A couple eggs, Greek yogurt, raspberries and kashi peanut butter crunch with coffee. Been mixing in a protein shake as well.

    Same.

not gonna give advice on how to move to a higher peak bc I never found my way out of that forest, but I’ve changed course and sort of just focused on dieting and proper nutrition as much as I can, and working out and taking care of my muscles as a means to mental and long term health rather than going for gains. At the end of the day, my career accomplishments outweigh my physical accomplishments.

My physique anxiety has reduced, I’ve been enjoying my work outs a lot more since then, I feel more lose and limber and pain free, and I’ve had a lot more energy during the day.

Anyone ever done just a sustainable low cal diet? I am comfortable eating 1200 calories a day and in that getting enough protein for my muscle mass.

wondering if I do this long term how much weight I could shed.

Quit drinking alcohol for a month so far too which helps along with the IF.

Trying to find more ideas for mid meals snacks. Just eating fruit when I have it or greek yogurt with granola and honey.

Why not start with something more reasonable like 2,000 calories a day? monitor that and see how much weight your losing, adjust accordingly. If your 30 pounds over weight losing 2-3 pounds a week is probably as aggressive as I would want to go.

You need to do a diet that's at least somewhat sustainable. You do the 1200 calorie diet and as soon as you stop the weight comes back.

I do it because I’m not hungry and it’s not hard. I make my own meals. I eat 300 cal for breakfast and 450 cal for lunch and 450 cal for dinner. I eat approx 100-110 grams of protein (includes a protein shake with breakfast). I don’t feel like I’m starving myself.

I prefer to skip breakfast and instead just go with coffee with cream and sugar until lunch. Not true IF, but gets me into a calorie deficit for the rest of the day nice and easy.

If I’m on vacation, I’ll oscillate between Icelandic yogurt with a banana on days I’m doing something physical (surfing, hiking, etc) or stacks of pancakes with bacon and eggs if I’m shit.

Not really. I walk (slowly) 3-5 days a week for a mile. I do a fully body workout using resistance bands 1 day a week. Really just for the cardio and tone not heavy.

Other than that I work at the business I own pretty much from 7-7 come home have dinner and go To bed.

If you get into too much of a deficit your body burns muscle instead of fat
