I for one can’t wait for this new Deafheaven album to come outings 8/20. Always loved the “shoe-gaze” parts on their albums but not a big fan of their death metal vocals. Not that I hate all of those types but really haven’t found another one I liked since ISIS.
Putting together a I’m turning 40 playlist for a trip I’m about to take to the coast but with some of my favorite summery style folk/pop songs from back when I was 30 or around that time (let’s just say 2009-11ish or something along those lines). I’ve got Skygreen Leopards, Wooden Wand, Spectre Folk, Giant Skyflower Band, Vetiver, Devendra Banhart, etc. but I’m having trouble recalling much else. Any suggestions that may fall under that very generic qualifier?
Big year for Pinegrove and Pinegrove affiliates. I now have their Amperland NY album as well as Half Waif and Jodi on my 2021 playlist
If only you were turning 30 and you could just put Bo Burnham’s “30” on repeat for maximum existential dread.
Currently purging my library. Rediscovering some good old stuff and cutting out stuff I just mindlessly added.
Leon Bridges with a big leap musically, only one or two songs leaning on the guitar as a leading element. Not sure if it really belongs much in this thread but I think it is quite pleasing.
Leon is amazing and definitely belongs here. Didn't realize the full album dropped. Been playing the singles a ton.
his new one is solid. like the new mega bog, love the darkside album. plan to listen to molly burch today
Buddy Guy does a month or two long residency at his club In Chicago most years, and I remember a show 5 or 6 years ago he brought up an up and coming singer for a few songs. That singer grew up to be President Barack Obama. Jk, it was Leon Bridges, it’s awesome to see how much he’s blossomed as an artist
it’ll probably chart in the AAA category, which is the least cool of the genres but who cares if you like it
Whenever I see this genre, I remember the genre PBR&B also exists and shudder. Shout out Night Beds, you weirdos
that term was actually started by a pitchfork writer who used it as a joke. reminds me of Carls from hipster runoff using the term “chillwave” and starting an entire genre
Yeah I did too, which made Ivywild even more perplexing. They went into the studio and said, “You know what the people want? A much (much much) shittier How To Dress Well album”
That sounds about right irt the origin. I’m pretty sure Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen had a chillwave episode on their podcast in the last year that was fairly interesting. Then again, I can only vaguely remember listening to it so maybe not that interesting… I’ve definitely fallen down a chillwave/ hypnagogic pop rabbit hole on Wikipedia a few times. It’s always disappointing that that rabbit hole usually leads to everyone’s favorite capitol storming shit head Ariel Pink
imo almost any type of music that doesn't have a dedicated thread can fit in here, "indie" as a classification has such a broad meaning now that it's almost meaningless, if there's something you enjoy and you think others would as well just post it
ariel pink’s nickname is literally “the godfather of chillwave.” washed out and chaz popularized it, but people like boards of Canada and ariel pink laid the groundwork
