i take issue with the term “accomdation” too. calling someone their preferred name/pronoun and making them feel safe when the shit and piss doesn’t seem like “accommodation” the way it’s used in our world imo.
How would they (admin, parent, whoever) find out if you're calling the kid something different in class? First day of class I go down the roll and I ask what they want to be called. I write it down if it's something different. One kid said he wanted to be called J-Dog; I wrote that down and called him that
we ran into this issue this year but basically parents were close during zoom class meetings. Heard the teacher call the student their preferred name which the parent doesn’t want them to be called creating a whole issue.
My kids last day is today. I work in another district and my last day isn't for another 2 weeks Spoiler JK, I work summers too, so I don't have a "last day"
Lost three teachers (and coaches) in a week. Two went to the rich rival who we beat in football this year. Principal is not happy.
I’ve had 4 interviews and all have offered in 2 days. Just debating all the scenarios in my head. When I started at my school 7 years again I swore I wouldn’t leave until I had my masters and took an AP job. I don’t finish my masters until next April but this is tough because my new principal is terrible. I know it was a covid year but she has lost 15 teachers so far.
The high school I work at lost a similar amount of teachers despite having a pretty good principal. I think this year has caused people to re-evaluate their professional situation in general. Of course, a shitty administration makes that decision much easier.
I don’t know if you can really blame principals for staff leaving this past year. Our principal is fine, but had lost a ton of staff due to retiring, including an AP, lost the VP due to her getting a promotion to head of district curriculum, and had our main AP English teacher die from cancer, and we lost our beloved secretary to COVID. It was a fucked up year.

Saw this thread bumped and with it being mid summer I immediately thought this was likely the type of update. Fuck.
You guys are unwittingly our greatest heroes right now. Not only are you raising our futures, but you’re having to brave more bullshit than any one profession should have to endure. I think back to my brief time in public education and cannot fathom how you guys do it. Keep at it because we need you more than ever. Edit: and obviously keep telling us about your dumbass students
How does the "new school" folks approach the first week? I admittedly have been what some called "old school" mostly because that is all Ive ever experienced both as a student/teacher. Some Quantitative Reasoning PD this summer has inspired me to get out of my own comfort zone and try newer approaches. What has worked for you guys?
I teach science and it’s always a lab to start, get them up and moving. Kids will be tired and aren’t used to sitting still that long during the summer. Need to ease them back in
First day today. “Are you Mr. Jake Barnes?” “Yes, but you can call me Coach if you want as well” “Are you a coach?”
I do the reverse of that. People call me coach and I say "Oh, just because I'm A MAN you think I'm a coach??!" and act all offended. They get a kick out of it.
I teach science and social studies. I play a couple different ice breaks, have students create class norms and discuss what makes a good class. Then I do a engineering project to introduce the design process and how we write lab reports.
What classes do all you have this year? - straight APUSH this year for me - rather teach World History
Luckily it’s only the classroom portion. What sucks is that it’s meant to be taught over about a 2 week period for 4 hours a day. I have to stretch it out to cover 50 minutes a day for an entire semester. All we did in May was watch videos and take a million “practice tests” via quizziz, kahoot, etc.
It was the same way for me in HS. I remember saying something to the teacher in the car one time about the "SIPDE Method" that was in the textbook. Me: Coach, I'm using the SIPDE method. Him: The what? Me: Search, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute. It's in the textbook? Him: Oh yeah, that. Nobody drives like that.
Absolutely. Here’s what you need to know to pass the test. No one does it, but you need to know it. Textbook says to not eat or drink while driving. I eat my breakfast in the car on the way to school every morning.
Update. The streak continues. 13 years in a row, at least one person has missed the above question about King Kong.
Our brand new middle school is amazing. It officially opens one Tuesday. My room and the other Science room are currently the only one a with tables. However we are the only rooms with no chairs.
One of my (male) students was in a female teacher's class saying “I love to eat ejaculate”. Guess who got to explain to him what that was. He was also loudly singing what was described as “the penis song” in the same class.
Had a student get arrested at the football game Friday for carrying a gun. Rumor is that he had planned on shooting another student whom he had an altercation with earlier this school year.
