That’s awful. I’m glad they caught them. My place is close to a really big WMA, and it’s not at all uncommon to hear gunshots at night.
Does anyone have a good speckle belly goose recipe or just general thoughts/tips on cooking them? Got a few this year, and haven't even cooked a duck in over a decade.
The meateater folks just posted on this, it looks pretty damn good. https://instagram.com/danielleprewett?igshid=ryts25kmc4jb Somewhere in there.
I went quail hunting Saturday and pulled off a pretty incredible feat. A bird got up about 80 yards in front of us while the dogs were pointing it and before we could get to them. One of the dogs was young, so he took off chasing the flying bird. It was a little higher than the dog the whole way flying at me, so I couldn't ever get a clear shot. Instinctively, I reached the gun barrel at it like I was laying down a bunt as it flew past me. It flew right into the barrel and died instantly.
Seen a couple around but not on our land. Saw what had to be an 8pt at least on Thursday morning, he was a monster.
Our dove field is covered up with birds right now. It’s rained so much that the seeds are already dropping. I’m sure we’ll get a hurricane the last week of August that will fuck everything up.
I too am looking forward to a good dove hunt in September. Every year I say I'm going to buy a shotgun, then I end up borrowing them from my in laws.
Got a new farm to hunt on this year. Less than 20 minutes from the house, free, and the best part is I’ll be the only one on it.
Trail cam pics are starting to get good. Here's two of the targets this year. One of them, the tall brow buck, was a target last year and made it through. The other was one we were on the fence about but I ended up passing him a few times, which I'm now happy I did. I actually passed him the night I shot the 8 point last year and passed him again in the video below. I shot a cull 6 point the same day as the video and saw the big brow tined buck an hour after I shot him. It's the only time anyone has ever seen him in the real. Pretty excited about the season getting here, even if it's still two months away.
Between 4 different farms a little under 450 acres. There is one that boarders a creek with a good wooded section that I’ll focus on. In total that one is 80 acres, planted with corn iirc.
Don't y'all have a velvet archery season coming up soon? Really wish Alabama would do a velvet archery weekend.
Was visiting my parents in the Texas Hill Country for a 4 day weekend and was hoping to put an axis in the freezer. Did not see a single 1. They had 2 separate herds going through their property almost daily. That is up until the February winter storm in Texas. It is estimated that the Hard freeze killed off anywhere from 30-50% of the axis population. Just some sad shit. It hit at their most vulnerable time, during their reproduction time. Yes they will bounce back over the course of years but damn, just a cold weather kill off.
So I’ve been spending all of the money. Bought a saddle setup and just bought a new Mathews v3. Got a snazzy hat with my bow. Told my wife I bought a really fancy $1900 hat and they threw in the bow for free.
First sit of 2021, here in Orangeburg SC. Around 4000% humidity. Deer been walking what looks like 3-5am, as it didn't stop raining until 3am. Walked 8000 yards back here to the stand bc it's too wet to drive. May or may not get sucked dry by the state bird, aka mosquito. Will report back shortly
I haven't even had a chance to get out this summer to clean things up. It's looking like I won't make it down there until at least doe season kicks in, which is fine too.
I picked this morning because of the rain, and cooler temperatures. Only 72 this morning. Looks like most movement was before daylight though, only seen 2 does
Here I am thinking how shitty it will be to start sitting Sept 12 in NJ. I can’t wrap my head around august in SC.
Different zones have different times. I came here to hunt with my cousin in Orangeburg. Their rifle season started 8/15. My house towards Florence doesn't start rifle til 9/15. No idea why the variations. I typically don't get started until end of September, but the lure of a full velvet is pretty high.
Rifle in Pennsylvania isn’t until Saturday after Thanksgiving. Most surrounding states are all around that time. I never realized the south was so early. Isn’t the rut like November or later down there?
Typically late October, 1st week of November. I think it's really about keeping them off the crops truth be told, but 90% of the time it's too damn hot for me to worry about it
I've only gotten 1 in full velvet and it just happened to be my first ever deer. After that, I think I've only seen 3 or 4. I had a good one walk through one day that was in the middle of rubbing some of it off, but I couldn't get him to stop and get a shot on him.
Daughter (8) was just out in the yard shooting her very first compound bow. She’s absolutely hooked. November I’ll take her for her first sit. She can’t shoot anything yet, but needs work on being quiet.
Things that were said by my daughter at 630 practicing archery. “I wonder if we’ll get a solar or lunar eclipse this year…” “Pinguino emperador is how you say emperor penguin in Spanish.” “I hope I shoot a deer right in the guts.” Stealthy like a ninja.
Alabama is October 15th for Archery and the Saturday before thanksgiving for rifle. Both go through Jan 31. Rut is normally sometime mid Jan depending on where you are
Not exactly hunting, but I foraged a nice bag of black trumpets today. Sautéed them up and tried them for the first time, big hit with the fam.
I got my dove limit this morning in about 2 hours in West Texas. All the crazy rain we've had this year made for it being really green. We hunted a big assed sunflower field and they started flying in right before the sun crested and were still flying around in the field while we were all done and cleaning birds. Going to be interesting to see if the birds stick around or if we get another rain that'll push them down and we have to wait for the weather to push the northern birds down to us.
In a weird twist, all of Texas has had so much rain this summer that I have no idea how the dove season will pan out. Usually you just find a food plot adjacent to water. This year, there is water in places that pretty much never have water Sept 1.
Always sweat my ass off during dove hunts. If I could get away with shorts and flip flops I would. But you'd be eaten alive by bugs.
