Wasn’t the WTC especially susceptible to sway due to the design? Moreso than Empire, Chrysler, etc…? I had a fun time going down the “432 Problems” rabbit hole last night. Seems like the complaints sorted into four categories: Legitimate: water flooding and elevator issues Minor: some creaking and a loud trash chute Inconsequential: free breakfast at restaurant discontinued and NYCers mad at the design/skyline impact Truly unhinged: main source for the hit pieces irate that she was forced to ride a service lift and wear a hard hat to view her floor before construction was finished. Nothing I saw cited real complaints of excessive sway, but I didn’t have NYT access to read the primary article everyone else referenced.
When Sarina Abramovich and her husband, who bought a high-floor unit for $17 million, was scheduled to move in, the building was still under construction. "They put me in a freight elevator surrounded by steel plates and plywood, with a hard-hat operator," she said. "That's how I went up to my hoity-toity apartment before closing."
Her husband worked extremely hard to become a Russian oligarch and pillage the post-Soviet economy so she wouldn’t have to be in the same room as someone in a hard hat. Can you imagine how traumatic that must’ve been for her?
Looks pretty huge and like it might be large enough to be considered a real mansion. Just a terribly, terribly ugly one.
McMansion doesn’t mean not a real mansion. Just means it’s for someone whose taste is far outrun by their money
I need a four part documentary on this. Who originally owned the land and what was on it. Who currently owns it. Built at one time or multiple additions. So much more. 9 year old me loves it. We’re looking at five or six stories here?
If i had way more money than i do its something id want to do. Id for sure go more of a hybrid movie/video game room but i get the fun of a place where you specifically go to enjoy a movie or tv show
It’s just a redundant space. With TVs and surround sound these days, you can get a great multimedia experience in a family room or bonus room. Give me something unique, gym, etc…
I know a luxury builder in my area and he said golf simulators that double as a home theater are becoming very popular.
That’s fair, but it’s redundant regardless. It’s an outdated model. There’s a reason home builders don’t program it anymore, unless custom, just in the same way apartment communities don’t purpose-build movie rooms anymore.
We have a little toy room with no windows so I put a cheap ass projector and a sound bar in there and the kids fucking love covering the floor with blankets and pillows and having a movie night. Way more than just the tv/living room.
Ever since I saw the movie Kingpin I've told myself that if I ever get that much money I'm going to have a bowling alley in my house.
They're probably a lot more practical in cold climates. They're fun/realistic enough to scratch the golf itch with friends when there's a foot of snow on the ground, and they make for a decent cold weather practice option too.
