In his mind they did. As he said "we got gold gloves, we got silver sluggers, were close in the community, you have to PAY for that" He's clearly making the point he's done it before he can do it again and since he's basically Mr. Cub you should pay him more. I thought 5/75 (rumored offer) was more than fair. Let's see what he get's on the open market. If they kept Yu this team is no closer to the Brewers at this point. The rest of the rotation was really bad and Adbert got hurt as he started getting into a groove and the offense started like shit, warmed up and went back to shit just like it has for the last 4 years. This roster should've been churned over after the 2018 season. Kyle was barely above a league average player last year. His 4 full seasons in chicago he was a 107 w/RC+ It wasn't going to happen for him here in Chicago
I think the Cubs saw the perfect storm: couple really bad deals (Heyward, Morrow), falling in love and holding onto players they should have moved earlier (Schwarber, Almora), players never panning out (Chatwood), and players peaking and never giving as many prime years as expected either through injury or just diminished returns (Bryant, Baez). You can overcome one or two of them but you can’t overcome all that. Not to even get into the Addison Russell shitbag side of things. When you trade away the farm for Q and Chapman there’s no way to backfill and you tend to get stuck from a roster situation I think Maddon was also the right coach for the group as young players but as they progressed he wore thin. This team wasn’t going anywhere so Jed did what he had to do and why they brought him in. I’m glad he was the one that did it because to be honest I think he got more than Theo ever could have. I think he got complacent, the miracle worker that won pennants in Boston and Chicago, and failed at time to improve the team when he had the chance.
Theo was great at building but the maintaining seemed to be his challenge. I think he just got so invested in players and stopped seeing them as depreciating assets.
It seemed from behind my keyboard that he was very very close to the core guys on this roster and didn't want to to believe it peaked in 2016. He did nothing but sell off the farm to try and improve the team and like I said a bunch of times the fans, media all kind of felt after 2018 major changes should've taken place. Keeping the team together, keeping joe for the final year is probably the biggest reason imho we are in this spot.
just what the fans have been clamoring for: more money spent on needless bullshit to take away from the aesthetic
Maybe the Cubs will be able to afford a middle reliever coming off of Tommy John surgery in the offseason now.
With how hard the Cubs and only the Cubs were hit by this pandemic I can’t believe they’re able to finance a wildly expensive project like this. Good for the Ricketts, between this, Hotel Z bars and restaurants and the large sports bar (Brickhouse) north of the Park space, I was thinking they were on the verge of bankruptcy.
"The Cubs had gotten to the point in which ownership afforded the front office little payroll flexibility, prompting the club to decline reliever Kendall Graveman’s $3 million option in November 2019"
The expectation is not to cry broke at the expense of making the team better when you have plenty of money to do all the other extraneous shit that's only going to line your pockets.
So if you want to understand why people call the Ricketts cheap. This line from Fangrpahs article on the Cubs today is why. "after spending $217 million in free agency after the 2017 season, Chicago has spent a total of $21 million in the offseasons since, or roughly half what the Rays have paid out in that span."
giving your players slight raises every year because you have to is like spending in free agency! That is unless you don’t qualify them and let them walk for nothing
I didn't know the Rays had a 200m dollar payroll... Man what big spenders. Imagine how pissed that fan base would be if the Cubs spent 200m on a roster and declined a 3m option on a relief pitcher. What cheap bastards!
This is now a Cubs Prospect thread... Duffy should be dropped from the 40 man... this kid added and called up
I'm amped for Hermosillo. His power has changed completely, so probably on roids, but that's cool. He was committed to play football at Illinois like 8 years ago.
This is just a structure where the lame Caption Morgan club is. Pretty sure the payback on a sports book there is manageable.
hey that's my hometown stadium a few years ago I saw Tatis come inches away from putting a ball on the roof of that building out in left
It's very nice... Very nice. Apparently he's done away with his high leg kick he was using as a yankee prospect and thus far the results are great
If tanking is the goal, I have no problem trotting him out there every 5 days. I'm not entirely sure why you cut bait with him right now.
Some kids in AAA deserve a shot to see what they have on the big league level. Outside of that I say let Jake pitch us into a top 5 pick
I think they value experience opportunities for young arms more than they do a sure thing shitty start
This roster they have today post trade deadline is far worse than anything in the early Theo rebuild years And how the fuck does Hendricks have 13 wins? 20 years ago he'd be at the front of the cy young race
So I think we can pencil in Wisdom as starting 3B at least to start the year next year. If Schwindel can maintain his play from the last six weeks he also likely makes the opening day lineup.
Wisdom has to win ROTY Looking forward to seeing what Rivas does. Also Hertz looks like a legit top of the rotation prospect.
For sure but so many of the guys that have been terrible won't be here next year. The Mills experiment has to come an end after this season. Davies won't brought back. And Steele and Thompson are just getting trial runs as starters. If they don't work out there we know they're solid out of the pen.
I think Adbert, Hendricks are the only two starters you can lock in for next year. lots of roster spots in that pen and rotation available
