Was listening to Tom Morello's show on XM and the theme of the day was live/concert performances. He played Jerkoff and explained the known stuff - how it was recorded at the Green Jelly loft on New Year's Eve and that Maynard rented a room from those guys and lived in a small part of the building. He then told a quick story about how some other people lived in another part of the building and they absolutely hated & feuded with the band constantly and how they almost came to blows a few times. Eventually all of the music and constant flow of people coming and going was enough and the others moved out but it's background to Maynard's "There used to be a bunch of assholes that lived in this part of the building, but we systematically removed them like you would any kind of termite or roach" intro to the song.
for whatever reason 4° won't get out of my head, also I may or may not have but most likely may have gained a better appreciation for Undertow in the last week or so, a true comeback story if you will
Whenever I feel like Undertow is slipping away, I watch the live show with Maynard in his long johns staring into my soul and get reinvigorated.
Every time I listen to Descending and it gets to the climax, I think of how awesome that would be blaring in a college football stadium right before a huge drive at the end of a big game. "Rise, stay the grand finale." "One drive to stay alive." Basically, 5:20-6:35, accompanied by a sweet hype video, would be incredible imo. Thank you for reading.
The crescendo peaking with “Stir is from our...wonton slumber” at 6:35 is the high point of the album and undoubtedly a top 5-10 moment in their catalogue. White suburban teens would refer to it as “everything”.
I keep trying periodically with a renewed spirit but I think Fear Inoculum's just not gonna ever happen for me, not to say I dislike it, just kind of lukewarm as a whole currently on Culling Voices though and I still think that's one of the standouts
The way Descending slowly builds into a raging storm is really underrated. When Maynard really ramps up and everything is hitting on all cylinders, it really is pretty epic.
There are only 79 of them being made, I think. Going to really have to decide if it’s worth it. I’m not a fan of having guitars that I’m afraid to play, so if I got one, I’d be playing it. I haven’t seen a price tag yet. No chance I’d go above like 5k for it.
This guitar gives me a lot of competing feelings. 1. Adam Jones is probably the most seminal influence on my musical life, and I’ve loved tool since i first got the undertow tape in 1993 or 94. I want this guitar badly. 2. Silverburst Les Pauls are badass looking. 3. 6k/10k signature guitars are clearly marketed to yuppies. They certainly aren’t actually worth that. 4. I’m a yuppie despite my attempts to keep hipster credibility. I’m basically just slowly transitioning from ~allegedly interesting person to “cool dad” type AT BEST. 5. I will play any guitar I ever buy, and I’ve already got 2 Les Pauls. I’m almost 40, I’m not joining a metal band any time soon. 6. Buying guitars for the sake of having guitars is lame. 7. I want this guitar a lot. If they’re already sold out, I probably did myself a favor.
Sounds like you’re going to have remorse regardless of which direction you go. Might as well have remorse AND $10k in your pocket amirite?
They are indeed sold out. I’m not sure if there was some sort of presale lotto or if they were just instantly gone but they’re no longer available. I’d view this as a once in a lifetime purchase that, despite the cost, is easily justified by the importance & impact its had on your life. Plus there has to be a reason other than the law to actually go to law school and wasting money on unnecessary shit is as good as any
lol whoops A pallet of 13 of the guitars was stolen off a truck outside of Indianapolis. They were headed to my hometown in NE Indiana and almost certainly includes the one purchased by a friend of a friend, which sucks because I was considering reaching out to see if he’d let me come check it out. https://www.wane.com/news/crime/pal...uitars-bound-for-sweetwater-stolen-off-truck/
Georgia has me feeling some type of way today, so it's just been Hooker With a Penis, Ticks & Leeches, repeat all morning.
Came across some Tool propaganda from the 90's while looking for an old users manual. Don't know why it's stamped twice with two different dates nor do I know how they got my address. Aenima came out later that year.
Their FAQ, along with the RATM FAQ, helped form some of young me’s earliest opinions about heavy music.
Doesn't sound familiar. If I wrote them at some point it would have been because of an address in one of their first two albums but I have no recollection of it. First page is a long winded news letter ended with, "c.u. later, m a y n a r d". It shouldn't make me angry but it does. I'd be a little less angry if I could still order one of these shirts for $10 (money orders only!)
those couldn’t have been cheap Ironically enough I saw them in Columbus back in college just after 10KD had come out and had floor seats too. One of my all time fav shows.
mega festivals like that are literally my idea of hell but yes they're headlining Saturday and Puscifer is playing Sunday
