Thanks Not exactly a desirable location. Seems to be a nice family neighborhood though. Guess I better find me a crazy south side girl now. Lol not sure my little coupe can handle Chicago. I’ll be very familiar with the Metra
My best friend was one of the people shot. He’s at northwestern and in stable condition. Hoping to be able to go see him at some point today. Been a pretty shitty last 14 hours or so.
Going to be in town Monday for work and staying in the West Loop/Fulton market area. Is it generally safe to walk on the streets at night time? Or should I stick to ubers?
Anyone else really despise fall just because of the feeling of impending doom of winter being around the corner?
The thought of a cold ass winter doesn’t seem so bad when you’ve lived in hell on Earth where it feels like 110 for a few months straight. Hell, even today it’s hot as hell there.
Yeah the weather through December is fine. There will be some shitty days randomly thrown in there, but there will also be random days in the 60s in late November. March-early May are the brutal times in chicago now, when winter just won’t fucking end Edit: I will say I’m a little biased because I love fall and like weather in the 40s and 50s as long as it’s not super rainy or windy
See, I can deal with the heat. It's the BRUTAL fucking cold that gets me worse than anything. That week of polar vortex bullshit we got last year where the high for the day was like -10? Fuck that. I was briefly working outside with like 10 layers on and that shit still physically hurt. Also, the sun going down at like 4:45 pm is the most depressing shit ever.
Thanks to global warming, texas got to experience those cold as temperatures too. And it’s hot as shit there most of the time. I get why some people hate the cold, but I’m the opposite. I’ve been in Chicago a LOT before I moved here, so I’ve experienced the winter a fair amount. Not one of those people that don’t know what they’re in for. Sounds like the south might be for you depending on just how much you hate the cold. Tbf you can’t do much outside when it’s 110-115 heat index either. About the same as the cold.
I got so tired of the cold when I was 19 I picked up my shit one weekend and drove to Gainesville, FL and lived there for 4 years while going to school. Literally decided to move on Friday and left on Sunday. Then I came back
Shit, in late December/early January we'll be begging for a 4:45 sunset when it's getting dark at 3:45.
I love it here but god damn do people drive aggressively compared to Texas Waiting too long to turn out of a parking lot? Let me just fucking pull out in front of two incoming cars. Fuck em
lol yup. Soon, you'll be driving like an asshole too. Wont even realize it until you go home to visit and start cutting people off when you dont need to because they just let you in. Happens to me
Also the lack of turn lanes so many places drives me nuts Saw a hs in the national news about a mile from my house because they were racist. It’s like I never left Texas living in this neighborhood with all the whites. Cops and firefighters every other house
No. Fall rules. I hate heat and humidity, at least with cold I can layer the fuck up. Nothing you can do when it's hot as balls out.
Just re-read this thread....definitely didn't have Mt. Greenwood on the Bingo card of places you'd move to. Welcome to the South Side. I hope your new neighbors have been warm and welcoming (at least I'd expect them to be). Area certainly has some warts as you seem to be learning (which tend to be emphasized in Mt. Greenwood), but lots of good people around too. I'm from a neighboring suburb originally and went to that high school's biggest rival. AMA.
Neighbors seem to be cool. Haven’t talked to too many yet, but it’s a nice and quiet family neighborhood which is nice. Obviously would have rather been downtown because that’s what I’m used to. Really big adjustment for me, but everything is pretty chill. Been trying to learn the good and the bad of the area the last week and a half. Couldn’t pass up on the instant equity I got in this house. I don’t regret it.
Gotcha. Mt. Greenwood and Beverly definitely have more suburban feels to them than the typical city neighborhoods. Wrt your neighbors, odds are someone will invite you over to drink in their garage (drinking in garages is a past time on the South Side) and you'll get to know your neighbors that way and you'll meet all of their friends and all of their friend's immediate family members. The neighborly camaraderie is one of the great aspects of the South Side and nowhere else in Chicago comes close, at least per my experiences. Again, there are warts to the areas, and you'll learn them. One thing to note, pizza on the South Side is terrific. When someone says Chicago style pizza I don't think of deep dish, but rather tavern style thin crust (i.e., the pizza cut into little squares) that originated on the South Side. There are loads of great pizza places on the South Side but my favorites are Fox's (they have locations in Beverly & Oak Lawn), and Rosangela's in Evergreen Park. Also, Palermo's on 95th in Oak Lawn is great too. South Side pizza > everywhere else.
The whole, I'm just going to put my nose out here. The traffic will see me and let me go... ... becomes a risky proposition when you leave the area and go back home. There is also the flipside of becoming passive thinking, "where the fuck am I going to go? It's just another speed bump/stop sign/stop light in another few hundred feet"
i need some shit to do. so, what can a disabled person with effetively zero money add to his list of hobbies.
Going to the library and checking out 1 or 2 or 10 books is my usual answer to a question like this, unless that isn’t possible.
Just a heads up for those who may be interested, tickets for ZooLights went on sale yesterday. Seems like EventBrite had tons of issues yesterday so tickets are still available.
Don’t forget the best of the best by far, Vito and Nicks on Pulaski. Parents practice out of Christ and Little Company and their medical clinic is adjacent to Palermo’s. Went to Morgan Park Academy in Beverly. Love the area mostly.
I didn't mention them because they have never delivered and fucktx mentioned not wanting to dine in due to Covid...now I'm curious, any clue if they started delivering as a result of Covid?
i don’t think so but I’ve grabbed a pizza from there. Good shit. Trying to think of the places I’ve had since I’ve been here. Vito and nick’s, milano’s (gf’s suggestion), fox’s based on your suggestion, and another one i can’t remember. But yeah thin crust >>>
This place is like a quarter mile from me. It always intrigued me because it’s gigantic but it never looks like there’s anyone in there
Good middle eastern food. I went to a huge 30th birthday party in their upstairs event space a few years ago. Pretty sure it has some shady owner/connections just based on whose birthday it was and her dad being mob-adjacent.
I went there once. Maybe 6 years ago. It was pretty good food, with a lot of atmosphere. Belly dancers ect. Had a good time.
Audiotree already canned him, which is awesome. Fuck that guy Edit: Also seeing he’s the son of multi billionaire Ronda Stryker so he’ll face no actual repercussions. Very cool!
Random request, but if you guys could push some traffic to this website, it would be much appreciated: https://www.riverschicagomccormick.com/ My fiancé and I work for the owners of Rivers, and there's a big presentation in Chicago today regarding the casino development proposal. Trying to push some numbers to the website of our primary proposal. TIA
I clicked around and read it, it's a nicely-designed site, good luck on your proposal. Now that I've done something for you can you do me a favor: please tell your boss to go fuck off with his bribing Pritzker to make sportsbook registration in-person only
I'll pass along the compliment - fiancé designed the website. As for your second point, only a few months to go but gotta love Illinois politics baby!
Probably the right move. Stunned at how quickly restaurants and businesses are shutting down with outbreaks. The two rapid testing places near me in West Town have had lines out the door every day since last week.
