Just supplementing this argument from page 118. I think someone was making an argument about drafting him for ticket sales
I had never really thought of it until I read that quote, but it makes sense. It does seem a bit odd that someone who skipped last CFB season and then had an entire summer before camp this year would still be struggling with it to this extent, though.
Yeah I'm in agreement. The ball is brown. Maybe they should've tried throwing it to him before drafting him.
It's almost like he didn't touch a nfl football until training camp. Maybe he was playing at night catching a lot of glow in the dark Nerf turbos. Probably doing it eyes closed listening for the whistling noise.
What exactly was Atlanta’s strategy taking Pitts at 4 when their team is clearly in need of a rebuild?
Build around a TE! they’ll get a high draft pick this year, but this years QB class isn’t nearly as good nor deep as last years.
Not sure why ppl keep saying this. If they drafted a rookie QB on a cheap salary, they can cut Ryan after this year and save $9mm in cap space. Then they'd have 40+ million to drop in FA to support the young QB going in his 3rd year. Ryan can be cut after this season
According to ove thecap.com the situation you're describing is if they cut him pre-June 1 2022. A post June 1 cut would result in 25 mil in dead money and 23 in savings. I think that's the route they will go. They would still have to pay him an 11 mil bonus.
So even better and his contract was never a deterrent in drafting a young QB. Idk. Even if Pitts becomes amazing it was probably still an awful pick by the Falcons. QB class this year is shit, TBQH
The giants still fucking have Dave gettlemen and we still suck so Tobias come in here and give these Atlanta fans hope
They save that money in 2022. But that would also add $16M in dead cap in 2023. If they cut him next year, they have to eat $40M. It's just a question of whether they do it all next year or split it over 2 years.
IMO the play was to acknowledge the reality that their roster isn't about to win in the next few years, trade/cut Ryan and eat the entire hit, draft Fields and maybe bring in a low cost QB like Minshew to run out there until Fields is ready. Then again their strategy may inadvertently work for them. They got Pitts, will probably be horrible this year instead of contending and who knows what QB risers we have between now and the draft.
