It's a FIFA and/or Football Manager thing. As time goes on in career mode and players retire, regen youth players (with different names) essentially take their place and you get a chance to scout and sign them to your academy.

 

At this point if I’m United I would offer to pay the full wages or all but maybe 10k a week to a championship side to take him on loan for a season. Maybe he realizes he enjoys playing and will leave next summer. That contract extension was one of the most bizarre moves in recent memory.
