Bourdain and Norm are two creators in my lifetime I’ve really admired. I mean REALLY admired. It’s not a super long list. DJ premier, Chapelle, Nas are probably the only guys left who would suck as much to lose
Learned like 5 years ago that norm is from my hometown, pretty weird for me to think about. He doesn’t claim it a whole lot since he moved from here pretty early after high school I think and he never spoke French very well neither..again not completely sure on that. He was pretty discrete about his personal life. love the guy so much, one of my favorite ever.
I love that Jim didn't understand anything Norm was doing It's what you'd expect from a guy whose material never changed in 30 years
Not much here. Celebrity deaths seem to come and go and I might, at best look at what people say. Norm McDonald was a genius and a level of comedy that will be studied forever for what it was and wasn’t. Norm was graduate level and anytime I heard someone say they didn’t like his standup, I knew they were not in the know. Absolute genius and made comedy an art. RIP.
Important Norm lore that I don’t think has been mentioned yet. when he hosted SNL a year after being fired and using the monologue to say that the show sucked.
I remember watching that as high schooler. Norm was my guy and seeing him host after getting fired brought such vicarious triumph
I was so relieved when Don was able to repost his stuff after a moment of copyright bs. What a trove. God the bump week gag was so weird
I'd love to know the exact time stamp on the whole "1 year old, don't look a day past zero" and "haven't worked out since...never, i've never worked out". My older brother loved Norm and i haven't hear those two jokes since I was a kid. EDIT: I saw the time stamp. Man I was only 12 and that joke stuck with me for over 30 years!
wow terrific find thanks. forgot howie started at yuck yucks. anthony of course is a huge fan and has talked about him before. That would suck to find out mid-podcast like that jeez not sure how you could change the subject much after being such a big figure in comedy.
his obsession with Nixon and ability to still make me laugh at dead presidents like that shows his recognition of pure comedy. I have went back and listened to a lot of nixon stuff just based on this bit and laughed and learned
His Netflix special was released right before my bachelor party. Myself, my brothers, and my best friend listened to it driving to Biloxi. We laughed hysterically the entire time. That's a special/those are jokes I'll never forget. Fucking legend.
The biggest compliment about Norm’s comedy is that people are posting clips of his comedy from decades ago, and NONE of it is dated or doesn’t translate. It’s just as funny today as it was back then.
It was posted as part of the montage above, but Norm getting choked up when he pays a genuine moment of respect to Letterman gets me right in the feels
probably my favorite oj joke @10:47 almost impossible to think of anyone else who could have delivered it
Norm delivery was incredible. He is one of those guys that 99.9% of the world could tell some of the same joke as he did and no one would think it's funny. Mitch Hedberg is another guy like that
