I've thought about this scenario too, regardless of ownership of the van, they lived together in FL. So in the event of a break up, they could have mutually agreed that he would take the van back to FL while she continued on a journey quest, however unlikely. hiring the lawyer doesn't really raise anything for me, but completely refusing to cooperate with her family certainly does under this scenario.
Right, don't ever talk to the cops. That's just a rule. Even if this guy is a guilty piece of shit, which he probably is, you don't ever talk to the cops without a lawyer. Ever ever.
Wouldn't be surprised. People who decide to live in a van and travel the country can end up in some very weird situations by choice or circumstance. I would be shocked if this guy did not have a criminal role in her disappearance.
Because he does not have to voluntarily speak to the police at any time. He can refuse to a say a word to them ever. They can arrest him. Interrogate him. However, they can't make him discuss it with them. If you didn't kill your girlfriend you think you he would want to help find her though.
I think this guy is very like guilty (Stephen A. Smith voice) ....BUT.... we've seen a metric fuckton of wrongful convictions highlighted in the 10 years so I'd avoid giving law enforcement the benefit of the doubt in a thing like this or really ever.
Let’s assume he didn’t do it: If she walks out by herself (vision quest scenario), don’t you tell the police, or at least the family, exactly when and where? If they fought over some third party, or if there is literally anyone else you can inculpate, don’t you immediately point the finger at that other dude as the motherfucker who saw her last? I think in either scenario, the failure to provide a plausible alternative to the obvious answer only raises the likelihood that he’s going to end up detained, and ultimately prosecuted (and sued), for killing her. So, if he didn’t do it, his lawyer should advise him to make himself available.
totally unrelated but there was a recent double murder in Moab a couple of weeks ago. Still unsolved. I am sure people will try to tie them together at some point. https://www.thedailybeast.com/kylen-schulte-and-crystal-beck-found-shot-to-death-in-moab
Playing devil's advocate, there's a possibility that he acted criminally without causing her death. For example, he could have beaten her up and she ran off. He wouldn't want to tell the police, because they'd want to know why. And, he wouldn't have anyone else to implicate. Again, improbable, but possible.
I mean, he technically stole her car and drove it across the country. Can't they bring him in on that?
Weeks before in a different place, right? Wouldn't that make more sense for why he wouldn't call the cops to potentially tell on himself if he were under the impression that she was going to them?
A thought I had was that maybe they were trespassing or otherwise exploring an area they shouldn't have been, she fell off a cliff or something, and he just panicked. But yeah you'd think he'd at least admit to trespassing or something in order to find her and stay out of even deeper shit rather than drive home for a week and keeping his mouth shut.
maybe she faked her own death and is starting over and he's helping so that is why he won't talk that's the dream right there
I misread the dates - I thought it was the day before her last social media post. I’m just not seeing the circumstances in which the absence of a counter narrative helps the innocent (or culpable, but not of her death) version of him. Maybe he’s saving it for the trial?
i'm learning a lot about what i should and should not do if i ever find myself in a similar situation
bro you may be on to something here they told friends there was a weird guy at the campsite by them was the date of the incident the Moab PD investigated around the same time as the murders?
He likely regularly drove it and had her permission to do so, which would mean it isn’t theft. At worst it’s an unauthorized use but you’d probably need her around to say he wasn’t allowed to drive it anymore. Now if he pushed her off a cliff and took it that’s obviously problematic.
Can he not be charged with auto theft because the van was never reported stolen? Weird gray area if that's the case. If the FBI really believes she is still alive I would think they would get him on that just to bring him in. While I agree this dude is most likely a killer I will echo that no one should ever voluntarily talk to the police without a lawyer, even if you are legitimately trying to help. And absolutely never agree to take a polygraph.
Obviously, I hope she's fine and safe and is reunited with her family soon. If that isn't the case, from a pure entertainment standpoint, I'm pulling for the zone of death/6th amendment "loophole" to see how that plays out.
It'd be interesting in that it's been a known loophole for years and like lots of other things in this country nobody has given enough of a shit to fix it so I get the appeal.
If you were the guy, and you killed her in the naitonal park, what would you do? Your only option would be to try and start a new life. They had to have had some cash or savings set aside for their trip. I don't think I would have chosen the option of... go home and hide in my parents basement.
