Not gonna clog the thread up anymore, and I apologize for my contribution in doing so before.

I'm inconsistent I suppose. Realistically, I'm a pretty reasonable guy when it comes to football talk and my posting is probably bipolar at best depending on the topic, I'll give you that.

That is being charitable. Ever since you re-emerged in July or whenever, youve been flying close to the sun. Only a matter of time until the hinges came off. Do better, b/c we'd rather see the reasonable football talk.

He's the most genuine and easily-likable head coach I've ever seen, certainly that the Hogs have had since Ken Hatfield in the 80s. Chad was a phony and it was evident from a hundred miles away. Bielema was a lazy drunk blowhard. Petrino was his own worst enemy. Nutt was a sycophant. Danny Ford had one foot in retirement when he took the gig. It's been a long time since we've had a head coach that made the whole state proud.

A big part of why I feel like he is so likeable is his “aw shucks” type of engagement with the media. He’s genuine and honest and really deflects a lot of the credit back to his coaches. He gets a ton of credit for the coaches he has hired but constantly is praising both the coordinators and position coaches in their work.

I did too when he was at Arkansas under Bielema. My kids and nephews went to lots of camps they held and one year while all the campers were touring facilities he and Randy Shannon sat at a table with me and ate lunch and we talked for 45 minutes. It was so awesome. So easy to see why he’s such a good recruiter if you just sit down and have a 5 minute conversation with the guy.

I can't follow your logic (or lack thereof)

Are you saying the exclusive variable that made this a unique case of a non-HC-experience hire --> successful HC = is that 35 years of experience?

Because that's not applicable to Dabo Swinney, Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, and the list could go on. Hence why I included, "Along with some others", that you seem to have accidentally glossed over.

I think Pittman is just one more data point that assistants can make the jump to P5 head coaches. Jimbo Fisher, Chip Kelly, Mario Cristobal, Dan Mullen, Luke Fickell, etc. None of them have identical backgrounds.

There are multiple paths to becoming a successful Head Coach. Just having head experience at a prior gig isn't requisite IMO. That was a prevailing notion on tmb for a while; or at least during Georgia's search.

Agreed. I misread your post as HC/coordinator experience. Dabo is a clear exception to that, and Pittman very well may be. If he is, I think that his unique level of experience is a reason.

Getting one an elite DC and Pittman being an elite OL coach have been a big reason for the hogs turning a corner from doormat to competitive again

we can lose briles and be ok. Losing Odom will suck

Odom is worth twice what he makes and he's already making bank.

Briles, I think, is underappreciated. The offense is so feast or famine that it's easy to dwell on the quick three-and-outs and then look up and see you've put 35-40 points up. KJ has improved every game this year and that's a reflection on Briles as much as it is KJ.

The first big non-HC hire (in the modern era) that I can remember working out is John Harbaugh, who was basically just a special teams coach when Baltimore hired him. It's easy to remember Orgeron was a colossal failure jumping from DL to HC, but as you say Dabo had already proven it could work in college.

Pittman's hire is a lot like the Dabo hire, in my opinion. Non-head coaches before getting hired to a school that was a regular underachiever despite good resources and a passionate fanbase, loved by players, good recruiter, hires top shelf coordinators, etc. The only difference is Dabo/Clemson plays in a soft division and Sam's in the SEC West. We're not going to start rattling off 10 or 11 wins seasons and national championships, but the hires are similar.

The players already here were good enough, they just had zero coaching since 2015. When Pittman left the first time, Bielema replaced him with an abject failure. Chad came in and tried to slim them all down to the size of linebackers. Pittman and his OL coach have been doing amazing work with what they have.

I think Briles helps a ton with what you’re seeing so quickly on the OL. The Baylor system makes blocking a lot easier on them because of numbers. Add in a great technical line coach, and you’ve got a stew going.

We had two in state 4 star OL this year and were only taking 3.

we will see who we end up with in 2023. I’m hoping for at least one 4 star OL per class. Have a feeling he will be able to work the portal too.

He wasn't at UNC for very long, but he managed to put together a starting OL where every player ended up on an NFL roster. I wouldn't be too worried about his ability to assemble a solid OL.

A little more to it than that. The offense is designed around motioning into mismatches. Your o-line (and ours) is seldom ever blocking even numbers.

I wouldn’t worry about star rankings when it comes to Pittman. He made 3* Solomon Kindley into an NFL player. That man can turn chicken shit into filet mignon on the OL
