that 3rd down conversion was my unclenching moment hell of a game killing drive, I love being wrong about basically every aspect regarding this match up, can't believe how we've been able to just ram it down their throats glad Rice was able to witness
watching the highlights and the fact that josh caught that full extension and didn’t bobble it at all is insane
I can feel that vindictive desire growing for all those nerds who thought we couldn't hang whoever and wherever they may be
Expected Sam to have a big night, but I can't get over that we were able to establish that kind of a rushing attack, 3 games coming up now that we *should* win comfortably while continuing to iron things out before who knows what kind of Miami squad comes to town
it’s unc so we know they’ll fuck up somewhere but we should win out in conference play. like we’ll be favored by at least a td every game from here on out outside of ND. clemson is bad too so this is the year to do it if we’re going to. just gotta avoid pulling a typical unc
So a handful of the usual suspects are chiming in saying Greene's ours which I choose to believe cause I aint never scared, could pop soon apparently
how many times this year have we seen Sam cock back for the deep ball only to hold on and take a hit? answer: a lot
not to spike the ball here but i said how much he caps this program during the orange bowl and momux told me i was being dramatic sorry bb ily still
I don't think this program has strengths, just weaknesses that are exposed at different levels depending on the opponent.
no, no sir but in the buffet of college football offenses there's a lot more variety than simply Longo or Shoop
well yeah obviously there is that too we don’t have to pick between longo and shoop. tons better options
I've figured it out, this is exactly the Butch trajectory Year 2 we jump out due to an exceptional group at the skill positions, but still lose games we shouldn't on the way to an 8 win season Year 3 we come in with a bunch of hype but struggle to replace the production at the skill positions and the OL regresses So basically what I'm saying is expect a megafuckton of off season issues next summer that completely derail the program
I really hope this season is my breaking point and I'll never buy into the hype again until there's a track record behind it
pretty sobering take by Staples on the podcast about Sam struggling to go through his progressions now that he doesn't have a guy like Dyami who would just win for him all the time
I've been boycotting this thread on principle but I'm OK now. What an absolute shit show out there. This team is a long way from where I thought they'd be this year and I've come to accept that reality. Let's hope for 8 wins and some semblance of sustained momentum.
I'm in the same place, win enough to not slip in recruiting, continue working the young guys in, reevaluate the staff at season's end, at the very least Searels needs to go and Bateman's pretty close to losing me
Greene's planning on visiting for the Duke game this weekend, which will be the last one he's able to take for a while, at least on game days, there were whispers earlier in the week that UGA had started creeping back up and people were concerned he'd show up in Athens instead so this is nice barring a shit the bed showing, have to think the offense at least shows up for this one though
me falling for it again reading the basketball notes after the football season we've had: Spoiler Below are notes compiled by Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes and Ben Sherman throughout the practice. * Same arena, same court, but a lot of new faces. Hubert Davis was active before practice, moving around talking to players, with a lot of smiles, but also some apparent instruction. * Familiar start to practice, with the head coach addressing the team. Davis talked longer than I remember Williams addressing the team, and he covered a lot of ground, but there were some of the same buzz words. Definitely heard "to achieve our dreams and goals." Involved the players, asking them questions (also same as before). Casual but direct. * Not a surprise that a prominent word on the practice plan for today is “spacing.” * Eddie Fogler in attendance. * Davis is taking a different approach to practice teams to promote more competition. White team is no longer just the primary rotation players. * Three stations now, split up by position. Posts Armando Bacot, Dawson Garcia, Brady Manek, Ryan McAdoo, Duwe Farris working with Sean May on posting up strong against him. Wings working with Brad Frederick: Justin McKoy, Puff Johnson, Kerwin Walton, Dontrez Styles, Leaky Black on perimeter passing and cutting. Guards working on ball handling against tight defense with Jeff Lebo: Caleb Love, Anthony Harris, R.J. Davis, D'Marco Dunn, Creighton Lebo (with Brandon Robinson participating to help even out numbers) * Wings drilling drive and kick to the corner. Guards stressing perimeter D. Bigs on straightaway jumpers - trailing big secondary break staple - and then alternating with driving to the rim from that spot. Manek-Garcia-Bacot obviously more comfortable with that drive than some recent true bigs. * Frederick has cones out on the floor to emphasize adequate spacing as the wings work around the 3-point line to create penetration lanes and kick-outs for perimeter looks. * Lebo stressing the importance of converting against contact at the rim by hitting the guards with a small blocking pad as they go up. * Standard Dean Smith/Roy Williams transition drill beginning with 3-on-2 one way, reducing to 2-on-1 the other way. Hubert Davis: "No missed layups, no turnovers. Let's go." * McKoy going hard to the rim - one-handed dunk on top of Dunn. That's a college vet welcoming a newcomer. * Hubert Davis as the fast break drill ramps up: "We want to be the fastest team in the country." * Davis stops practice to tell the players not to softly enter the paint in transition. If the defender is in the gray area just inside the free throw line, Davis said to take it to the rim and "dunk on him!" If the defender collapses into position, make the pass. * Brady Manek has some soreness in his left knee so he's not a full participant today. While the team is doing a 5-on-5 drill, he's doing agility work with Jonas Sahratian on the sidelines. Clearly not a serious injury issue since he's battling hard with Jonas in the post and then running hard in agility work around cones. * Turnovers in full-court team drills result in a down-and-back sprint for the offending team. Coaches are tallying turnovers and the team is running for them. Hubert Davis to the Blue team: "You had three turnovers. Take care of the ball, make the easy play." * Standout plays in that full court 5-on-5 were a corner three by Garcia, a TO that Davis picked up and scored against Johnson, a Love lefty finish, Walton dribbling into a straightaway three. * Part of it is how the teams are put together, but Leaky is getting some run at the 4. Bacot, Garcia and McKoy on the floor together with the white team. * Hubert Davis: “You can shoot that, but it better go in." * Teaching about the emphasis when the ball goes into the post: "I want you to be quick, but I don't want you to be in a hurry." Davis is detailing where he wants each player to go when the ball goes into the post. There are defined spots for every time the ball hits the hands of a big down low. * Really interesting to watch Hubert Davis explain the thinking behind spacing in the halfcourt, getting the big a 1-on-1 matchup in the paint, perimeter shooters available for him to pass out in predetermined spots, second big moving. "You've got many options," he said to Bacot, who is holding the ball on the block. * Stresses the need to get to certain spots with "a sense of emergency" when the ball enters the post. The emphasis here is clearly repetition so that when the big receives a pass in the post, he will always know where his teammates are going to be set up. No need to look around for an option when he knows the handful of designated locations. * Davis: "We'll do this today and build on it" as he teaches halfcourt spacing. * Team split into three groups, not by position. Working with assistant coaches on talking and moving through pindowns, cross screens, back screens, etc. * This has been a technical practice. Several new wrinkles that Davis is implementing on both ends of the court, so all four coaches are spending a lot of time explaining the nuances of each assignment. * Lebo stressing to his group the importance of defenders opening to the ball with arms up on down screens in which the screener rolls to the basket. Good way of defending backdoor cuts by watching the ball handler instead of chasing the roll with back to the ball. * Davis explaining how defenders are supposed to communicate when their man is setting a side ball screen: screaming ICE. Notes it cannot be soft communication. "There's going to be 21,000 people in here." Has to be loud. “It’s clear, it’s early, it’s definitive. He knows exactly what I’m doing.” * Long talk from Hubert Davis about defending the dribble drive and help defense. Going to be a bit of a different approach to help defense vs. drive and kick possibilities. * Sean May seems a natural fit making a point about post defense. Reminder that this is the beginning of his first season as an assistant coach. * McKoy attacking the offensive glass aggressively (and successfully). He's got the right and confident mentality, it's evident. * Quite the fiery speech from Hubert Davis just now when he thought players weren't going hard enough. "If you're tired, I DON'T CARE! ... I'm tired of losing. I'm tired of not going to the Final Four. I'm tired of not winning the championship. I'm tired, too." Took a one minute break for the players to get water and the steam was just about coming out of his ears. Regrouped, explained in quieter terms what made him upset, and practice continues. * 5v5 drill with one team lined up across the free throw line facing the other team lined up along the baseline. Lebo throws the ball to a guard on the baseline and then drill starts. One defender collapses to the baseline before running back on defense. * While four guys work on ball handling on the opposite end, the rest are working on defending baseline drives. "Sense of emergency" is a favorite Hubert Davis phrase - says it more like "sense of E-MER-GEN-CY." * Clear points of emphasis today: defense, ball handling/turnovers, spacing, effort * Lebo: "The most important thing is when the ball comes out (of the post), somebody has to get the ball. Don't run away from the ball." * Hubert Davis scowling after a TO on the first possession of a full court drill. "Make the easy play!" * Nice floater by Puff Johnson across the lane over Bacot, followed by an aggressive defensive rebound. Most visible he's been today. * Love and Harris finding a teaching moment for Dunn about where to be on an offensive set. * Great sequence for R.J. Davis, cutting to hoop to get feed from Styles, then wrestling an offensive rebound on the other end, followed by tying up Love on a drive. * Davis fiery again, channeling his inner Roy Williams when he doesn't like the response a player gives an assistant coach: “When a coach says something, your response is ‘yes sir, yes coach.’ … I’m not from that generation. I don’t need that conversation. If you want that conversation, come to my office. We can talk all day. Just listen. Be quick to listen.” * Bacot backs his man down, finds a cutting Davis behind him. Nice look. McKoy beats Puff baseline. Strong move. * Justin McKoy has popped during this practice. Great footwork on both ends of the court, very solid fundamentally. Good-looking shot and has made a couple of quality drives to the rim. * Three-point shooting at all of the available hoops before post-practice stretching ends practice. McKoy was clearly one of the best in this segment at it in terms of most made 3s. Really good base on his shot, consistent form
If Manny survives the next week, which I think he will, can we pre-order another beatdown in Chapel Hill? Mack’s gotten him fired before
