Big respect to Lando for playing for the win not the podium. Gutted it didn’t work out

I mean, good for the championship, bad for Norris. Bottas did recover what seemed like a lackluster middle part of the race to finish ahead of Perez for Constructor’s widening.

Also, Lewis will have to change that engine soon. This small gap won’t be for long, 7 races left. I’d like it to be decided in Abu Dhabi.

Wait...how did Lando win fastest lap at the end when he was on the Inters? The majority of the race was run on slicks. Surely many laps on slicks had to have been faster than his last lap on Inters.

He got the fastest lap around 47th or 48th. Was pushing on a low tank of fuel to stay ahead of Ham.

Red Bull did Perez no favors today. Driver and team just can’t get it right at the same time lately.

edit: Sounds likes he wanted to stay out

What a phenomenal race. Gutted for Lando though; he deserved it.

Verstappen made out like a bandit.

Man you don’t have a heart if you weren’t on the edge of your seat hoping Lando could pull that out. That was fascinating.

Charles not going to inters kind of makes sense. A chance to steal a top 5 finish. That decision might cost them third in the team title race. Pretty crappy. Happy for Carlos to a podium.

Lando not going on inters was utterly stupid. That team gave entirely way to much power to Lando and way to emotionally invested in him. Really shit stuff from the pit lane. I don’t feel bad for Lando he pushed for this result. Mercedes told a 99 race winner to stfu and pit.

Yeah I didn’t understand even early in the race they were asking his opinion on stuff. Just tell the guy what he’s gotta do. Daniel said it was a no brainer for him to pit, seems crazy they let Lando tell them no.

Shows you the difference between winning 100 races and none :(

mclaren with strong showing in back to back weeks though so that’s great.

I read that the McLaren staff was not convinced the rain would get worse and that was why they were not as forceful as Mercedes was with Hamilton

I think Ferrari can take another step forward next year. If McLaren can as well we may see four teams battling for wins each weak and that would be amazing.

I’m not trying to start shit (yes I am) but I think it’s hilarious that Perez has been sacrificed and fucked over by Red Bull just as much as Bottas has by Mercedes but no one talks about it because it doesn’t fit the narrative.

Checo is happy to have that drive. He’s got a win, he’ll get another podium or two this season and will likely come back even better next year.

He’s the lamb this year because Max’s in the championship battle.

I missed it in the race, but did they wait an extra lap to bring him in? He had a very solid weekend IMO

I always wonder if the teams are honest beforehand. "So Valteri, this is the chance of a lifetime. We're gonna put you in the best car, with the best team, and an unlimited budget."

*muttering "but also see to it that you will always be second fiddle"

"So what do you say, buddy?"

Seriously, nobody is going to say no with seats being such a commodity, but has to be frustrating with the odds stacked against you by your own organization.

We need some non Lando fans so pick another driver. Team Danny Ric here.

Watch the Senna doc on Amazon I think. Gives a feel for some of the near history of F1.

Because the narrative around Bottas and Checo is way different. Redbull isn't pretending as if Checo was coming in to compete for a title. They wanted someone to help Max fight off Mercedes and not be mid pack with the 2nd best car. Mercedes has always put forward that Bottas is on par with Lewis and can fight for the world title thus giving fans the impression he's better than he trully is. In reality both those guys have talent but they are the Ruben Barrichello to Michael Schumacher.

My man... Lando is knocking on that door as well. I think people fell in love with Russell because of the underdog storyline (and he's got a ton of talent) and always out qualifying his teammate but Lando could be the next British superstar driver after Lewis calls it a career.

Lewis vs Russell should be equally as awesome. Unlike Bottas, Russell has been anointed the next great at Mercedes and the replacement for Lewis. He's not going to be a good hand for the team he's going to be trying to win races and a title, how he and Lewis mix and how that's managed will be interesting. I could see him giving one season as the new kid on the team but at some point he's going to be the man. The results are going to flash and the media will turn the dial up and hopefully for the entertainment value we have a Rosberg v Lewis situation at Mercedes.

And checo has a lot more self-inflicted wounds that have been as important as whatever strategy RB is trying to implement with its two drivers. If he was more consistent week-to-week and not continually working his way up from the back of the pack, the 1 vs 2 strategy aspect would probably be more closely scrutinized.

He won't leave McLaren and they'll pay him whatever he wants for the foreseeable future. He's young, super talented, and super marketable.

Merc will have plenty of other choices in their young driver program or likely have a pick of the litter on the mid pack and lower teams of they want.

Like most I’ve only been paying attention for a year but my feeling on Max is that after this year his only concern will be driving a car that can win championships. I think he’d leave RB in a second if for whatever reason they mess up the next car and there’s a Merc style front runner for years. He’s cocky enough to think he can catch Lewis.

That's not cocky. That's being a competitor whose at the top of his sport. You think he should just have the attitude of that being out of reach?

Lewis made his jump but he stayed with Mercedes engines.

Max doesn't really have that same relationship with RB/Honda or soon to be Redbull VW.

I think he's going to want to see what commitment and what development they produce and to me he could easily jump ship if things don't look great.

He strikes me as an assassin

Except the whole signing him at 14. Putting him in Toro Roso before he was legally allowed to drive, then almost immediately getting him in the red Bull and since then building and strategizing with the sole purpose of getting him wins/drivers championship points.

Max strikes me as the guy who would want a say in who is around him, aka I’m sure he signed off on Checo. But I just don’t see him leaving Red Bull unless they just plummet. Which with their resources seems unlikely.

The rumor before this season was that Max's contract had an opt-out clause if Red Bull didn't meet certain performance requirements. I get what you're saying and I think RB has acquitted itself well enough that Max is happy, but I have no doubt he'd take off if they experienced a nose-dive with the new regulations.

That was talked about in Drive to Survive I believe season 2. They had to be in the top 3 in the constructors for a specific clause to apply for him staying or being able to leave right away.
