He had issue with them riding in the middle of the road. That is a legal activity. Rip it from that context and chase down whatever conclusion you want. Once you do so, by pointing out that cyclists still break other laws, the same can be said for motorists, to a much larger degree. That is all.

Yes, cyclists are constantly breaking the speed limit on 35-75 mph roads. So much so that there have been exhaustive studies & research into if it is as frequently as motorists!

Then add in seat belts. Then add in expired tags, no insurance, etc. Yes, you are making an extremely compelling argument. That argument is there does not need to be research into something that is glaringly obvious. Motorists break the law way more than cyclists. That might be do to opportunity and more regulation but that does not change the accuracy of the statement.

~200lbs being distributed onto two small road bike tires causes more damage to roadways than all semi trucks combined

not to mention the pollution they put out that causes untold numbers of cancers and respiratory illnesses

realistically if you don't mow down cyclists on sight can you even call yourself a good citizen

Happened again this morning on the way back from the gym. Decided to go down on Beach Drive to check out the waves during the current high surf warning, and got stuck behind two cyclists lazily biking side by side at 10mph in a 25 zone. No good place to pass, and I finally turned around rather than sit behind them anymore. But hey, there were only six cars stuck behind them so it was only a 3:1 vehicle inconvenience factor

I live in Santa Cruz County so you can't swing a dead cat in this town without hitting an entitled cyclist. Most are OK (like most drivers are OK), but the sheer numbers of them means you're bound to deal with an asshole on a regular basis

I certainly get why you might not honk anymore and drive slower, but if the horn isn't for people like that then they might as well stop adding them on cars. I rarely honk if someone isn't about to hit me, but I will honk at someone like this if they're straight up not paying attention and I can't get around.

It's funny how cyclists are being termed "assholes" repeatedly ITT while motorists are irate about being "inconvenienced."

I think people who become irrationally angry about having to slow down for a few seconds or even--gasp!--a minute for the sake of a non-car on the road are...not nice!

In my years of cycling, I've made errors and done dick moves. Plenty. Or my fatigue occasionally gets the best of me and I roll through a stop sign when I know the other car is slowing down. That's because my vehicle is thigh-powered, and my slowing to a stop and then nodding to the car, who then waves me through disgustedly, slows us both down anyway. By rolling through, I get to provide everyone's favorite thing: righteous indignation!

And we cyclists are HUGE fans of righteous indignation.

One more comment re: safety on off-street bike paths. My average speed on my bike is 15-18 MPH. Those off-street paths often have pedestrians, or more casual riders. They often cross intersections like a sidewalk would. Motorists aren't used to looking for bikes moving that speed, and such collisions with pedestrians can be deadly.

During such busy times, it's safer for all of us that a bike uses the street.

Driving is often inconvenient. Getting from one place to another generally can be. Get over it and practice better time management.

Listen, I’ve typed like 10 total words in this thread to this point, so I’m unsure what has you so agitated, but imagine sourcing a study like this:

“The study is not without its shortcomings. It’s unknown how much the presence of monitoring equipment influenced cyclist behavior.”

Someone not wearing a seatbelt or having a tag 2 mos out of date does not create an inherent risk for everyone else on the road. Even speeding isn’t inherently dangerous. The single largest factor for accidents is speed differentials, which is why a country like Germany enforces lane discipline and proper passing to keep roads like the unrestricted Autobahn safe.

A cyclist going far below the limit and not yielding forces the drivers caught behind them to go far below the limit, which ramps up the speed differential between them and approaching cars. That’s not just an inconvenience; it’s a potentially deadly situation for everyone involved and the reason why many jurisdictions impose minimum speed limits where appropriate.

Why can't cyclists just use the bike lane when one exists? That's my only issue. If there's no bike lane, ok whatever. But when there's a bike lane and/or path outside the road, it's a dick move to ride in the middle of the lane and slow down traffic and expect everyone to go around you.

Listen, you are the one that came in here and quoted something I said and then implied that cyclists are lawless rule-breakers on the road. I am sorry if you feel the need to cherry-pick one sentence out of 2 articles that may keep that implication alive, even if only by the smallest sliver.

I am sorry that I provided you with a link to a study that stated 85% of cyclists adhere to the rules of the road while a whopping 66% of motorists do not. And that you used a sentence from a completely different study summary that was completely upfront about the limitations of that particular study.

Those are some really neat points that have nothing to do with the post that I made. My post was in response to someone laughing at the thought of cyclist being law-abiding in the road. Yours seems to be about whether or not there needs to be more laws in regards to cyclists.

I invite you to get in shape and workout or commute on a bike regularly and put hours and hours into it. Do it mostly on “bike paths/lanes” and then occasionally on “streets.”

Then report back to me on which one of those, the street or bike path, did your life flash before your eyes the most. The answer is going to shock you. You need feet, to either side, to react to things on the ground that you can not even see from a car. Or else you can end up in the hospital or worse. That is not something most bike paths can provide. Especially when you factor in mixed use and rubbing elbows with runners, strollers, and golf carts.

There were 2 separate links posted, one completely unrelated to the other. This is not that hard to follow. As in one link was/is completely unrelated to the other. Multiple links. Multiple sources. Not just one. Completely separate.

One study was in a major European metro and only observed major intersections where running red lights is basically suicide, and the other is basically the equivalent of cyclists “doing their own research”

listen, if you count going 5 over the limit as speeding then of course drivers break the law more often, so I’m not going to argue this any further.

And that is what I said from the beginning, that motorists break more laws of the road. This was a really weird way to come to the conclusion that we agree. Motorists break more laws while cyclists are vilified.

So your answer is "I don't want to and I don't care how inconvenient it is for others." You don't want to be inconvenienced and don't care if you inconvenience others. Glad we got to the bottom of it.

Curious, if a car decided to plow down the bike lane bc they didn't want to sit in traffic, what would your reaction be?

You seem to be really hung up on “inconvenience.” I am sorry life is so hard. I recommend breathing exercises to maybe lower the BP. Maybe take up an exercise, like for instance road cycling, to burn off some steam. Until God grants you full unfettered access to 100% of the road all the time, just as the founding fathers intended, I hope life finds you well.

That is ridiculous, and has happened, and is a result of an unchecked mentality similar to what you have been spouting off this entire thread.

You are confusing “inconvenience” for physical harm or death. The latter seem to be slightly more significant. Inconvenience is taking a shit and then realizing you have to get up and get some TP out of the cabinet.
