Comedians “we criticize culture” culture “ well we can critique comedians” comedians “CANCEL CULTURE”
Conservatives on Twitter have co-opted Chappelle today. And like, the worst, blaze-type people. So that’s gross.
For Norm I thought it was funny. I am glad he’s agreed to lay off tho. I was ready for him to move on long ago
Hopefully Chappelle uses this break to think about the type of people that get what he's trying to say with the trans stuff.
All those rich people worth millions on television and comedy specials telling you about how they've been cancelled. Life must be so hard
It's absolutely ridiculous that these men can't just say and do anything with impunity! And I'm usually team comedian because you can tackle any sort of subject matter of you're funny and aren't punching down. But, to me, Dave's LGBT material often veers into punching down and isnt that funny.
with the right co-opting him, now it'll be fun to see if he embraces it like Kanye or does the Homer-backs-into-shrubbery.gif like Chance The Rapper.
Cancel Culture isn't fucking real. It's just white male conservatives that are angry they can't be bigots without facing backlash. It has been since day 1. Black men/women like Chapelle co opting and boosting their message is such a slap in the face, because you'd think he'd be smart enough to realize that.
I'm just sick and fucking tired of this bullshit. It all comes around back to racism and fucking hate black men boosting this bullshit signal without realizing who he's helping. Like fuck Chapelle man, I'll never watch anything he puts out again.
social media broke the world in many ways but celebrities/powerful people using it and seeing random ass people criticism is a big one that leads to them almost always losing their minds i'll never get over how extremely online dave is
It sucks because I considered Dave the funniest person on the planet at one time and maybe the funniest person I've ever seen. Just really disappointing
dave became rich and lost his compass that made his early work so incisive, happens to lots of comedians. will always respect comedians like steve martin who walked away when they knew the dynamic was broken by their own fame and position in life.
Chappelle roasting Candace Owens feels kinda weird now that the alt right is embracing him. Like spiderman dot meme.
Dave *says things that probably align with African American communities as a whole* TMB “Dave is now alt right”
Nobody said he's alt right. Just that he's receiving the praise of the alt right for his material on the LGBT community. That should give him pause.
His story about beating up a lady was shocking. Can't believe that isn't the controversial part of this.
Dave *says things that probably align with African American communities as a whole (bc of centuries of systematic racism that has resulted in extreme poverty and lack of education)* TMB: “wow Dave has lost it and that he’s saying things that align with alt right talking points backs that up” Conscious Contrarian elites on TMB: “wow much hypocrites”
The fact that you had to hedge your first sentence so hard that it was rendered meaningless, probably should have tipped you off to this being a dumbass take.
fwiu and maybe you (or anyone else) can correct me but Dave is getting shit for transphobic shit. Are you implying Black people are transphobic? Also no one is called him Alt Right people just rightfully point out who coming out to praise him and that it should give him pause.
Transphobia is weird man, I live in west LA, and outside of West Hollywood I don’t think I have seen an obviously trans person in years. I’m sure I encounter them all the time, but don’t realize.
I don't know one personally although I'm sure I've seen them. Cracks me up that people are just raging about people that decide to switch genders when its such a small group of people that really don't bother anyone.
The only trans person I consistently ever see is fucking contrapoints via YouTube. People who pick on trans people are cowards of the highest order. You’re not gonna have any contact with trans people unless ur deep in the lgbtq community. These people act like calling someone by the pronoun they’d like to be called is tyranny. If I walked up to some of these people and called them pussy ass bitches they’d be ready to fight despite them acting as if being that disrespectful to a trans person by calling them a thing or something is no big deal. Soft fucks
one of my best friends from high school transitioned a year ago. I see transgender people in denver fairly regularly. Nothing about it is a big deal except what the person transitioning has to go through
this is an intentional goal of transphobia being mainstream and largely acceptable same dynamic occurred with homophobia, pride parades to bring visibility begat broader cultural acceptance, etc
Do we know that Dave's compass was ever correct about the stuff he's talking about here? Or do people just assume that because he's capable of inciteful thoughts on race and issues he's passionate about and has first-hand knowledge of that he wasn't always ignorant and dumb about other topics he's never bothered to understand? I guess I just think the "he got rich and lost his way" thing is a convenient thing to say about people we liked at some point.
maybe? but then the same critique holds for the topics he chooses to prioritize, so it's not even a full explanatory component while also understanding theres research on the impacts of immense wealth on how your brain functions that are in the vein of what i'm saying as well
I don’t think that’s what it implies. “Getting rich and losing his way” to me that he started to talk about things he didn’t understand. The individual lost his edge and starts sounding bitter. Not sure if that makes sense.
you think keeping non heteronormative people out of public view or acceptance isn't a goal of social conservatives? bigotry has been used for these goals literally forever to use social pressure to carry out ideological goals whether it was around segregation, miscegenation, gender norms, women in the workplace, on and on.
when your net worth hits eight figures you have to try extremely hard to stay grounded and imo it's borderline impossible anyway in the current year and will become almost certainly impossible in the near future. that level of money (and usually celebrity/fame), you may as well say you're from Mars because you damn sure aren't on Earth with the rest of us anymore. you stop driving yourself because you can pay a chauffeur, you stop buying groceries because you can afford to always eat out or have someone cook for you. you never really look at a bill again, you never have to worry about what happens if you lose your job, you never worry if you have time to mow before it rains, just all the tiny bits and pieces of life that the rest of us deal with every day. when that stuff happens, you just lose touch with everyone else that isn't similarly wealthy and I think your entire perspective on life flips. unfortunately for these people, they're often under the delusion that everyone else actually really wants to hear their opinions on well, anything, when the reality is that couldn't be further from the truth.
i maybe ascribed meaning to “intentional” that you didn’t mean. I think it’s mostly just conservative Christian grievance bullshit. It definitely results in trans or others hiding, but most Christian denominations in The US are basically American folk religion at this point. I’m not sure on the origins of pride parades, but the 3/4 I’ve been to seemed a lot more like a big fuck you to bigots than trying to gain acceptance.
sure, social heirarchies are cemented and propagated through socialization. you(generalized you, not you specifically) either understand what you're doing or you're a useful idiot who just does it by reflex. many of the people who carried out violent acts against gay people, black people, etc think they're doing the right thing, they're protecting their socialized idea of what society is "supposed to be" as taught to them by their families and communities. i don't think your idea of pride parades is that disimilar from the earliest ones that were very quiet affairs, a fuck you to bigots is very much carving out a space in the public mind. they were to be a visual representation of resistance against a society that rejected, killed, and imprisoned them to show people who were straight or closeted or whatever that they were humans too. these were stated goals all along. people showing gay affection in public was as radical as sit-ins or voter registration drives in black communities. all challenging a rejecting society.
I mostly agree with this, I just have an inclination to side eye (and not sure this term makes sense) narrative explanations of the actions of large groups of people and historical events.
see i'd argue its less a narrative explanation than a material explanation of power dynamics and cementing those heirarchies or breaking them but the activists at all these levels i'm talking about were very clear eyed about their rationale and goals in the moment!
Making fun of or targeting trans people when you have Dave Chappelle's platform, ability with words, and money, is pretty shitty and uncalled for. Dave's joke is: "look at this freak." From a guy who walked away from his own show and tens of millions of dollars because his mental health wasn't right.
Don’t know where I read it whomever said “chapelle used to be about punching up at authority and now he seems to want to just be the authority” and that felt spot on
