I don't think there really should be any sacred cows in comedy (see, eg, someone like Jeselnik who seems to hit all over the map). I also feel they should be accountable for the shit they say, and not just say "comedy!" to escape all responsibility.

BUTTTTT if you are going to go there, there is probably a way to do it that doesn't feel mean-spirited. If you were going to write a trans joke you can follow that up immediately with a joke targeting Rowling, or the straights who seem obsessed with the trans community, etc. They are just as easy to write about (if not easier, since Rowling always sports a look like she has a cinder block up her colon).

And it helps if you diffuse the jokes across subjects within any 5min or so of a 50min set, while DC is getting hyper-focused on LGBTQ+ stuff. It feels obsessive and weird. It's bad writing. It's also fucking lazy. Even a topic that modern progressive culture would approve is probably shit after 10 minutes of endless jokes circling the same theme. Change that shit up.

Also the story about the trans comedian, while absolutely tragic, seemed very “I can’t be racist, I have a black friend” to me

This is probably a shit example, but there was a time in the US when you could do blackface as a comedian and bring the house down. Things changed, and rightly fucking so. Somehow (sarcasm) comedy and jokewriting evolved. There is way to be funny without overtly or specifically targeting any group of disenfranchised or trod-upon folks. It may be HARDER (maybe? probably not) to write that shit, but it's doable.

Patton Oswalt is very fully while still (currently) staying within the bounds of norms that does not evoke e-wrath. Bamford, Gulman, and a host of others seem able to be funny and navigate this challenge.

You just have to try. To me, it feels like DC doesn't want to try anymore. The Vulture writer is right - he needs a break

Alex Jones is the best and possibly only true example. most other "cancellings" were just someone saying or doing something shitty and being removed from their one job/project at the time. Jones was an absolute menace and people basically hounded every company who operated within arm's length of Jones until he was more or less driven into the shadows.

"cancel culture" started that process...Louis's inability to navigate the comedy landscape afterwards finished off that process.

Dave's ability to be such a catalyst in other social discussions has probably kept that from happening.

with what trans people deal with mentally both pre and post-transition, trans jokes can be borderline just mental abuse. they as a group have an extremely high level of suicide (iirc the attempt rate is something ridiculous like 42%) which makes me just say maybe leave them alone entirely unless you're trying to be supporting until/if we're able to find a way to help these people to the point where that number drops into a more normal range in line with other groups.

I agree entirely with this but I think he did a slightly better job explaining his argument in this special than previous ones.

In an effort to be aware of his evolving stance in this discussion, the new special is worth watching.

I don't think this is true at all. He has always come off as an extremely introspective person aimed at starting discussions with his comedy. It's actually what has made his inability to "get" what comes off as willing ignorance at this point so aggravating for people that love his comedy.

I mean he is certainly nuanced and empathetic but I don’t think the guy who created Clayton Bigsby is really all that concerned about being cancelled himself. He’s always had racially charged or insensitive content while always having the ability to come across empathetic. I don’t think he’s doing a good job navigating this Trans thing as well as he’s done others but I also do not think he hates trans people at all.

I mean, there’s been a discussion about Norms content of late as well. It’s comedy and I think these guys come from an era of comedy that had no limits and now they’re trying to keep the spirit of it alive. Dave just needs to let the LGBTQ stuff go because he’s not doing anything constructive. I think he realizes that as well

i wish people would define "cancellation" or bad instances of "cancel culture"

Louis being a sexual predator and not getting high profile TV shows or anything anymore (although still touring the world to sold out shows) is just a normal circumstance. Funnily enough we're probably only a year or two away from him on-ramping himself into the mainstream again.

I love standup comedy and listen to a shit ton of comedians on podcasts. But they are the biggest group of soft fucking babies this side of right wing politicians. I can't stand this persecution complex or concern about cancel culture. Fuck yourself! You make dick jokes for money and fame. If some people tell you to fuck off because you're being an insensitive dick that's part of the job description of being a public figure with public thoughts and opinions.

Even Chef Goldblum just found himself on Your Mom's House podcast. So even for a dude who got cancelled that isn't a fucking star he's sitting in on huge podcasts with very successful comedians post SNL firing.

similar to the rest of celebrities they just never want to be criticized, social media changed the dynamic

its just comedians have this content production complex where they're just always somewhere talking about everything all the time so it becomes this human centipede of awful whining hopping from podcast to special to podcast forever

For Dave, and this special in particular, it's weird that he seems to play both sides of the fence here.

He says he doesn't give a shit about Twitter discussions and that consuming him as an entertainer is a choice...but that collective voice can also be responsible for someone as big as Kevin Hart being pulled from the Oscars. At some level, he's gotten used to being able to play the extremes of a discussion that he's a part of(racism, as a black man) but doesn't realize he doesn't get the same leniency in one that he's not(LGTBQ, specifically trans lives, as a cis man).

I think he's trying to say that he can make jokes about one dehumanized community because he's part of a different one...but it's not only not true, it just doesn't land.

He ends the special saying that he isn’t making any more LGBTQ jokes again until he and the community can laugh together. He called women bitches the entire night. Made Jew jokes, Asian coronavirus jokes and talked about beating up a woman and there’s no mention of those things.

The TERF stuff was a bit much but he kind of softened it with the Caitlyn Jenner bit. Otherwise, he was just being Dave

I think that’s why the TERF stuff rubbed me wrong a little, because it seemed genuine and not a vague comedic attempt. I do not believe he tenderized a woman’s tiddies like chicken cutlets. That was a joke

Jones has virtually no reach anymore. his spots on Rogan are all the outside world has to know he still exists. his mainstream social media presence is about as close to zero as someone can get. does he still have hardcore followers, sure, but a lot of his base was as casual as any other show and when they made his programming difficult to watch and absorb those people simply quit watching.

you really should examine how omnipresent he was prior to being cancelled to fully appreciate where he is today.

Not really a stand-up fan in general but I went to one of the Chappelle shows with some friends right before the pandemic. He ventured into trans and feminism stuff during the show and the audience (like 80% white male) reaction’s changing from genuine normal laughter to cheering on in agreement was pretty uncomfortable.

A woman in the audience actually called him out and told him to “say something new”. He was rightfully pissed about the show being interrupted but then went on a tirade calling her a bitch and complaining about women like her for 20 minutes, which was even more uncomfortable as most of the audience cheered and applauded.

Weird argument for you to not let go of. Dude was one of the most popular comics in the world and had his own show that was outrageously successful and profitable. We found out he was a gross weirdo. Now he has no more show and Redav has to tell people he still has comedy shows somewhere out there.

Okay but who all is doing that framing? Other comedians and Chuds? Guy had his own tv show and now he can’t be found on TV anywhere. He was cancelled. I think you’re arguing against a point I’m not making. All I was doing was disagreeing with Redav that he was not cancelled. I fully agree with him being cancelled though, or whatever term people want to call it by.
