I mean, racist, sexist and homophobic humor have always been apart of his act.. are you new? I’m not excusing it, I just think it’s been funny, clever and nuanced throughout his career and I don’t think he’s really changed anything.
also, even if Netflix whirls around next week and yanks the special, Dave was still paid and thus not cancelled either.
I don’t wanna give you a hard time. You are definitely a smarter guy than me and I won’t argue that. I like most of you guys a ton but sometimes it seems line you all share the same huge brain
As I’ve said before, he’s not worried about being canceled. I think he just thinks it sucks there’s a sacred cow he can’t make fun of
Or more accurately "profoundly wealthy and famous man is mad he can't make fun of minority groups with impunity."
then he's fucking dumb, he has complete freedom to say whatever the fuck he wants. he's scared of consequences, that's not everyone else's problem.
I never followed Jones so I don’t know the difference in his reach but if he still has a show how is he “canceled”? He still does that info wars shit. Who is acting like “de-platforming” is a bad thing? i don’t think cancel culture is a real thing.
the difference between now and then is if 2012 Alex Jones had 2021 Alex Jones' platform, nobody would have harassed the parents of those dead kids at Sandy Hook.
I wanted to drive 85 in a school zone the other day but that super meanie speed sign only said to drive 20 so it made me do it!
I just find it funny that in 30 years when we’re all posting on this website as Bill Maher “liberals” we’re all ginnna bawl our eyes out when Dave dies. Just like every comic who went through this before him we’re gonna act irrationally in the moment and try and give him flowers when he’s gone. Dave has brought me joy and earned the benefit of my doubt. He’s gonna have to do more than this for me to pile on.. Last post.. I think
I think this is his problem. Rich or not he associates himself with the struggle of African Americans in America. He's angry and bitter that in his view other groups haven't had the same up hill fight. Or are "more protected" than other minority groups. It reminds me of a poor guy that gets rich and goes hard right. Doesn't want to help anyone and feels like everyone should have it as rough as he did.
The whole just a guy who tells it like it is and and it bothers mainstream America seems weird when your making the exact same argument for Chapelle as people banned from here we’re saying about Trump and Tucker. People still have the right to say whatever they want, but watching people get mad because it isn’t 1990 anymore and people think it’s shitty and offensive is weird.
you struggle when people criticize anything that has emotional resonance with you, its fine, but its very shallow and lets say....simple
I haven’t watched but I like Dave so I probably will watch. The last couple I’ve watched I found not as funny as the previous ones. I understand what you’re saying which I think boils down to “He makes fun of everyone/ everything and people only getting mad at the trans stuff proves his point”. I haven’t watched so idk if you’re right but the people who are coming to his defense makes me uncomfortable.
Man if I had a dollar for every time you called me dumb I’d have a few bucks. I don’t even care anymore really though. You are who you are and I am who I am. It is what is
Dave got old and rich, and much like an overwhelming majority of artists who reach this point of their careers, mostly sucks now except to those fans who like it due to scratching the nostalgia itch.
He’s become preachy and has been going on long form “lessons” instead of joking about taboo things. There is a difference, quit being a weirdo
And trust me when I say I’m not a fan of the people coming to his defense but I also feel he isn’t a fan of them either
Thanks for the lesson. Like I said, I’m ready for him to move on as well. I appreciate you getting me in line Joe Withabee from the Internet
You’re welcome. You consistently post with the intelligence level of a high school dropout, so I will engage as such.
I have you guys know that I did actually graduate high school. I feel suddenly like that is information you all should know
huge part of Dave's problem is he peaked too soon. he did Killin' Them Softly, the Show, then For What It's Worth in about five years and was almost untouchable as a comedian. he basically had nowhere to go but down. it's all hindsight, of course, because nobody knows when they've peaked in their field until well after their peak happens but if he'd have stayed gone like Barry Sanders, nobody would have said word one. he disappeared and reappeared roughly ten years later, immensely wealthier and no longer connected to a world that was very different from what it was when he first left. then he throws out a flurry of material in the past four years and people are sitting here going "this isn't Killin' Them Softly".
FWIW he still has his show but for example no twitter or youtube accounts. The whole discourse is just perfect for clickbait articles about someone's "cancelled" because 2 people on twitter said they wouldn't watch something anymore or something of that nature. The fact that these things are put in motion by people who "cancelled" the Dixie Chicks and French Fries says enough.
I should probably watch the shit before I weigh in any further. W.r.t cancel culture, as many have said, until it's actually defined discussing it feels like intellectual masturbation. Dave isn't being cancelled by any definition I would use. People may try, so perhaps the term should be 'attempted cancel culture.' But unless someone's career is materially affected in a negative way it seems off to ascribe that term to that person being called out for shit.
Dave can escape this criticism anytime he wants by simply not searching the depths of the internet for it. If I ever achieve a net worth of 9 figures I’m logging the fuck off. That’s not an option for trans people.
Imo the problem with Dave more recently is he goes after LGBTQ+ people and their struggles as if it’s an exclusively white issue. He frames everything as “X group wants rights, X group wants to be the victim, but none of them have been victimized like black people have going all the way back to slavery.” Either intentionally or otherwise he seems to miss the point that there are black LGTBQ+ people too who have had to endure the same struggles Dave has for being black IN ADDITION to the struggles of being LGBTQ+. It’s the only problem I’ve had with him as a comedian or public figure. I’ve been a huge fan since the late 90s/early 2000s, and I’m going to watch whatever content he puts out, I just wish he would be more sensitive to the plight of others even when it’s not completely within the lanes of trauma he personally has experience with.
I don’t think facing the consequences of your actions is being canceled. Like Lyrtch pointed out being “canceled” implies sone sort of unjust action but that’s not what generally happens. That’s why I don’t think there is actually a cancel culture. Just because those who have been voiceless and marginalized in the past are finding some power, it doesn’t mean others are being unjustly silenced.
Plenty of people use it as a catch all term for shit head celebrities getting there’s over the last several years. Like I’m cool if you and Lyrtch don’t use it that way, but lots of people do. And yes, I also get that shitty people use it in a negative way. Fuck em. I hope Rogan gets his ass canceled too.
I’ve never seen/heard/ read it used as anything other than a pejorative term/manner. It’s always seen as unjustified. You might be the only one I’ve ever seen used as a positive. I think we’re saying the same thing just using different terminology when we say “I hope they have to face the consequences of their actions”.
As a comedian, Dave’s biggest sin is if you’re going to say crazy shit, it better be funny as hell. This, and most of his latest shit….isn’t.
will wait to hear from the self proclaimed defenders of free speech and anti-cancel culture crusaders
