If Tom Brady wasn’t Tom Brady dbl would instead be here bitching that 1 super bowl title isn’t good enough. Yes they were that close from winning. Until Brady did what he always does late in the 4th
The buccaneers have won the nfc north (formerly known as the nfc central) since the last time the lions won their division
It's really impressive that someone who has been head coach at three high profile places can be as bad at talking to the media as he is. And he also was the media on two separate occasions.
In terms of running a program, Urban seemed to have his shit together better than just about anyone else when he was at Ohio State. There is always potential for disaster when college coaches go to the the league, but I'm honestly surprised at how much mismanaging he seems to be doing, even outside of his recent bar escapades.
In 1991, the Lions were on their way to 12-4 and the NFC Central championship with a young Barry Sanders and a strong offensive line when, late in the season, they lost young starting guard Mike Utley to a spine injury that left him paralyzed. They lost in the NFC championship game that year after getting their first playoff game win since the 50s. The following June their other starting guard was hit by a truck and killed while doing yard work. Their only playoff win in 60+ years came with the death of one OL and the paralyzing of another.
People made fun of Saban in the NFL but he did 100x better than Urban has so far and the Dolphins weren’t complete shit either
Yeah it seems crazy that’s he’s struggling this bad. He’s buddies w bellicheck and Schiano. Schiano especially could have given him some advice, he seems to have learned a lot from his nfl flameout.
This is true, Saban just couldn't adjust in dealing with the players. Sounds like Meyer is having a similar issue on top of just not seemingly being cut out of the pro game.
I think that comes from his mic'd up quote about "I didnt realize it's just only football" so now he probably has more free time where that time used to be filled with recruiting, dealing with boosters, dealing with admin/AD, etc
I'd also imagine there's a certain amount of protection you get from the media as a big-time college coach in places like Gainesville, Bowling Green, Utah, and Columbus
Especially with a media group that already disliked him and wanted him to fail. I don't think Urban understood what the Zach Smith stuff and everything that came out in that investigation meant outside of the CFB bubble, where his success and relationships with Thamel, Feldman and others protected him. If he didn't get it after the disaster of hiring the Iowa S&C coach, he better understand it now. Because he really needs to step up his press conference game or he's going to get buried pretty soon with some of these quotes.
I still can’t wrap my head around how Meyer even remotely thought that was a good decision. Then again after everything we’ve seen so far, it’s becoming apparent maybe this guy was never really a good decision maker to begin with
The Lions have had a top 3-5 RB and WR retire early because of shitty ownership and hopelessness, have lost two separate games to the longest FG ever, have one playoff win in Duck70 lifetime (cheap shot I know) and he’s trying to argue that a team that has made 2 AFC championship games in their what, 20 year existence is on Detroit’s level? Detroit has been a franchise for 92 GODDAMN YEARS and have as many playoff wins (7) as Jacksonville in 25 years. Didn’t the Jags make the AFC Championship right out of the gate? dblplay1212 this might be your magnum opus FOH
And saban had actual great players like Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor that stood up to his shit, not whatever is on this jags roster
to be fair UF media have to be one of the worst in the the country, one of our shitty writers wrote a book called “Urbans way” for hells sake. And when guys like fowler would write anything urban thought was negative…well we all saw what happened
The Cowboys have the #1 offense in the NFL in yards per game, two potential HOFers on their OL, a QB who can run, and two of the better RBs in the league and are averaging 260 passing and 170 rushing a game. Fuck is Urban smoking?
if Urban actually cared about this job you'd think he would basically glue himself to Lawrence and nurture that relationship above all else, and instead I'm not sure if they've met yet.
By the end of the 1996 season, the Jaguars had twice as many playoffs wins (2) as the Lions (1) since 1957. The Lions played all 40 seasons during the stretch. The Jaguars played 2. Jacksonville has won 5 more playoff games since then, even though it has only made the playoffs once in the last 13 years. The Lions have won zero.
He's in full on "save myself" mode and that's his only priority right now. His ego is just too big to understand that throwing other people under the bus is only making him look worse.
