There is a theory supported by some evidence that Amelia Earhart was killed by coconut crabs. Sounds batshit as a stand-alone statement, but there’s enough evidence to make it more plausible that other theories. Earhart/killer crab story starts at 10:00 Cliffs in spoiler: Spoiler -Amelia Earhart crash landed, survived, ended up on a small island on the route to the next stop on her journey. -She washed up on an island that is home to thousands of coconut crabs. A skeleton that measurements determined to be Earhart’s was found near a campfire. Possessions that belonged to Earhart were also found. -Coconut crabs don’t just eat coconuts but are also carnivorous and cannibals. Eat small animals, climb trees to kill birds, will eat each other and even themselves. -The crabs pinchers are as powerful as a lion’s jaw. They are highly attracted to the smell of blood and will frenzy around a carcass. - Earhart’s skeleton showed signs of being torn from the body. Their conclusion: A wounded Earhart was sitting around her campfire when thousands of nocturnal crabs emerged from their burrows, smelled her blood, then proceeded to rip her limb-from-limb and eat her flesh.
Luckily Roland only had to deal one lobstrosity lol. The island Earhart washed up on was Nikumaroro. It’s about 5x2 miles wide and the home of a few thousand hungry crabs. This is a pretty cool quote from a National Geographic article from a scientist that’s been there: Spoiler During the day, when the scientists do most of their work on the Pacific atoll, the crabs are easily avoided. Those that emerge from their burrows into the intense tropical heat spend their time in the shade of the coconut palms, say, or among the branches of the ren trees. (Yes, the crabs can climb.) But at night? “The crabs close in on you,” says John Clauss, a member of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) and a veteran of more than ten of the organization’s expeditions to the island. “If you shine a flashlight, outside the shadow ring there are a thousand crabs.” Or so it can seem. Clauss has learned not to sleep on the ground. Basically it’s The Conjuring crab style lol.
