Long story, but my wife and I are bringing my mom to NYC in December. Want to make it as special as possible for her. Do y’all know of the best car service to pick us up from LaGuardia and take us to Times Square?

I have, but again, it’s a long story and a woman from a poor, poor rural Tennessee town has never been to a city bigger than Nashville. And I would like for her to have a special experience, and something “fancy” like that would be special to her. I’m asking to explore costs. Thanks for the question and input.

In all seriousness, Uber Black XL is a good option.

The car services are all really hit or miss, and incredibly over priced. You are paying for them to hold a sign in the terminal. I really would suggest just getting an Uber Black SUV. If you insist on car service with indoor pick up, there really isn’t a lot of difference between the services as there are tons of them, but you’ll probably pay considerably more. Just google for good reviews. It’s all about the driver you get, and that’s a crapshoot no matter what, there’s thousands upon thousands of them,

37th and what? If you want to be by 5th Ave and the tree and lights I can recommend some spots. 37th and 7th or 8th will not be ideal for you.

I have used Blacklane a lot in the past and have found it to be pretty good. Guessing it would be at least $150 though for that.

Not sure how often you've been to NYC, but for a first timer like your MIL, if you're trying to get the most out of her time, I've always found doing a walking food tour in one of the neighborhoods to be my favorite part of the trip. We try to do a different area each time, but my favorite ones were the Chinatown/Little Italy one and the one we did in Greenwich Village.

The hardest part is figuring out what to do and avoiding paralysis by analysis because there's so many options. My wife and I have gone 4 (I think?) times in the last 8 years. I would say our favorite experiences have been the food tours (already mentioned our favorite ones), going to the 9/11 museum, renting a bike and riding around Central Park, and going to comedy shows at one of the Comedy Cellar venues and just hanging out in Greenwich Village.

Statue of Liberty tour is cool because you get some nice views of the city from the river and the monument. Have done both the WTC and Empire St. Building rooftops. I like WTC better because it didn't take nearly as long to get through the line (like an hour difference), but I've heard the rooftop at Rockefeller is probably the best for views.

Neither of us really care for Midtown and typically look to avoid it just because of how crowded it is, but I get wanting to check it out if you've never been. But the amount of people that were around that area when we did it over Christmas a few years ago was a bit overwhelming, so just be prepared.

If you have time in your itinerary to head over to Brooklyn, we thought the DUMBO area was pretty cool.

    Another thought for first timers:

Get an early spot at The Met and spend 90-120 mins there. Then walk out into Central Park, hit the fountain, and walk down the Promenade towards the Plaza. Hit the plaza basement shops for coffee, then hike the ten blocks down to Rockerfeller and do all that, including the windows on 5th ave. That will give you the most exposure to classic NYC xmas shit on one route.

Then back to the hotel, shower, and head out to the west village for champagne at Air's and dinner at Dante.

I highly suggest this. If the plaza food court isn’t your thing, swing west over to Tavern on the green. Brunch is great there.

I’m going to the Navy - Army game and looking at flights. Plan is to stay in the city somewhere (probably Manhattan) and then get out to the Meadowlands for the game. I haven’t been to NYC since I was in HS and looking at flights. Best flight I can find out of Orange County goes into Newark.

Looking for recs on where to stay and have relative easy access MetLife as well checking other areas of the city. Not interested in doing any tourist bullshit, save all of those jokes.

    thanks,
    wayne

Only way to MetLife from Manhattan is penn station train with a transfer involved on NJ transit. There’s probably a bus but I don’t know anything about that. Otherwise it’s a pricey Uber there and way pricier back.

That being said you probably don’t want to stay by penn station so I’d recommend the Madison Square Park/Union Square Park area. Close enough to penn station for the game but far enough away that you won’t be in the area.

Drive from midtown to the stadium with mild traffic could be 35-50 min. Cost going could be around $50 or so and heading home could be $125 with a surge.

life hack for Uber/Lyft (can't remember if it's both or just 1) is to schedule your pick up during when you expect a surge so that you lock in a much lower flat rate.

Had success with that at Wrestlemania last year where the on demand rate was like $75 but the scheduled flat rate ended up being under $20. Not sure if they've plugged that loophole or not, but it was a nice little thing to randomly discover that weekend.

Since the beginning of Sept I've been in Manhattan 4 times. Hit Blue Note 8 times, Nublu 4 times, comedy cellar twice (got Dave Atell, Aziz, and Chris Rock out of that) and LPR once. Finally managed a Dante visit (long overdue) the other night. Also did the Van Gogh thing, MOMA (rushed), Central Park a bit, high line/little island... Honestly the nightlife is the game so any of the standard touristy stuff is just bonus for me. I love it but I would never survive a full summer season with the humidity, esp in the subway.
