It's already been mentioned itt but the suicide numbers within that community are ridiculously high. Content - especially from someone of Chappelle's stature in the entertainment world - that belittles and dehumanizes the community only serves as more fuel for that fire.
It's exactly what he said people should do in his special. If you want change stop complaining and walk out.
The weird part of this “cancel culture” rage (and yes I air quoted on purpose) if that I can think of one person off the top of my head whose convictions ended his career and that was Kaepernick. He was literally blackballed for his beliefs. Every cancel culture warrior alive will say he got exactly what he deserves. It’s a stupid thought process by dumb people to cover for their inability to be an asshole.
Because he pointed out the absurdity of racism and it was funny. It was coming from a place of empathy and understanding. It was relatable. He has gotten stuck on LGBT issues, specifically trans people. It's not comedy anymore - it's a rant. Most of that special was "poor me - I'm so persecuted". There were maybe five actual jokes in it. And also not buying that "he doesn't care" since he just spent half his special telling his "I had a trans friend" story. It's not that trans people are a sacred cow or off limits; it's that he's not funny on the topic and you can tell it's coming from a bad place.
His point about white women and trans people suddenly lumping themselves with the overall white contingent when the going gets tough really hit me as a person of color. You can get away with denigrating people of color still and if you take a shot at the LGBQT community all of a sudden the uproar is more. And I feel that.
This was my take away from his special. As a white guy it's not really my place to decide on it being right or wrong.
The line between being an insensitive dick and a hilarious comedian is unbelievably thin. You have to be the best to stay away from criticism while hitting tough subjects. And even then it’s nearly impossible to do it forever. Dave’s been the best at navigating controversial topics but even the best fuck up.
The old joke is comedy equals tragedy plus time. I feel like a lot of comedians aren’t giving these jokes time. There are literally trans people committing suicide and being murdered for who they are, so maybe a genius like Dave can find other avenues for comedy that aren’t, I guess I’d say hot button or fresh. You can tackle tough subjects if you do it in an entertaining or funny way. 20 years ago Chris Rock started a special making fun of Columbine. He wasn’t edgy, he just brought it from a thought provoking place. It’s not impossible to be funny on tough subjects, it just isn’t easy.
I think the special is funny. Sure there were some things he said that were cringy and shocking and not funny, but I seriously doubt anyone watched this and didn't laugh at all. Some of the things he said about white people were hilarious.
my two oldest came over on Sunday there was some drinking involved. From what I heard there was equal parts laughter and outrage. I didn’t watch because I was grilling.
“it’s the duty of the comedian is to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.” -George Carlin Free speech and the 1st amendment are also at issue here. Sometimes people say unpopular shit, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be aloud to say it. Stand-up comedy used to be a last bastion of free speech. Team 1st amendment and people’s rights to say things I disagree with.
What in the fuck are you even talking about? Literally no one is taking away his right to free speech.
I consider censorship, content removal, de-platforming etc. as limitations of free speech. Special interest groups have petitioned for Dave’s content to be removed from various platforms notably for Netflix to take down his stand up specials.
Was just about to post that, but was trying to find a way to say it without coming across as a dick and was drawing a blank.
So you believe businesses shouldn’t have the right to decide who they want to do business with. Like just stfu and don’t change this discussion to some ridiculous argument absolutely no one is having.
Dave: alt-right talking point that has been run into the ground over twenty years Some posters: omg this is genius
"I should be able to say anything I want about anyone I want without any possible damage or repercussion to my career or reputation because I'm a stand-up comedian." - Every stand-up comedian ever
If you can't laugh at his jokes about getting the shitty vaccine and being at Walmart "rummaging with the poor whites." Then you never liked Chappell.
Curious if the board thinks it’s punching down when Dave makes jokes about child sexual abuse? Why are trans people off limits but survivors of pedophilia not only fair game but get the biggest laughs. Seems like survivors of sexual abuse, especially children, should be included in the protected class that can’t be subjugated to attempts at humor that might be at their expense.
You may want to look into what the first amendment actually protects and from whom. Legitimately not trying to be a dick but couldn’t think of a nicer way to respond to your post, which admittedly pissed me off because it confirms my fear that right wing bullshit is now pervasive and people can’t distinguish truth from said bullshit
Personally don’t find that funny either. Do we have a bunch of people on here who find pedophilia funny but not jokes at the expense of the trans community?
no one is clutching shit itt. Some didn’t find it funny. No one is asking for him to be arrested. You’re the only person who brought that up. You want to make this about something no one is. It’s quite fascinating to watch.
I’m not getting the reference. If this is from his latest special, I didn’t watch it. The last one I watched wasn’t very funny and after reading reviews of this one, I decided I had better things to do.
I thought the special wasn’t very funny. Some of the “jokes” are just pure anti trans commentary. That said, this being the line he can’t cross seems like it supports his larger point.
