I actually enjoyed the back and forth with the Somm. Ended up doing a 1/2 bottle of white and 1/2 bottle of red. Not sure how else they’re supposed to make a recommendation without a price range?
I felt the same. There was a price component but also what styles, regions, etc do you like. The only negative for us was they gave us a bottle of something I had in my cellar (probably a good sign of interpreting). They gave us a really good .375 of Bordeaux I wasn’t familiar with and have since bought (Chateau Fonplegade).
when mondavi says to kalon it doesn't always mean its from the actual to kalon vineyard. seems like suckling enjoyed it though
Went light on Arnot-Roberts after the Bechmark bin sale last week and generally trying to slow down spending.
I don’t know if you guys are using VinoVest but I have been and it’s been a great experience… I wish I had the resources to start a project like this … I still have a few entrepreneurial wine industry ideas floating around in my head but I’m still around a year away from getting them going. Anyway… BoL https://vinovest.co/signup?grsf=a51hhd Use the link above if you want to join up and you can get some free stuff… if you don’t use a referral link… you don’t.
They’re buying bottles that you can’t get access to… and yes you hope they appreciate… but if you ever want any of the bottles that have been stored on your behalf you can “cash out” and have them sent to you.
Can be a lot of First Growths, and a lot of Burgundies, yes… they buy the wine they think will appreciate the most but as you have more money with them you can customize your portfolio more
There isn't a single wine on there that everyone on here couldn't get access to if they really wanted.
^^ very true. Between WineBid, K&L, Morrell, Crush, the big upstate NY stores, Verve, Flickinger, HDH, Flatiron, Wine Solutions, and many many more there are maybe 3-4 SKUs that you'll struggle to find. Even then, you'll find them with enough effort.
I can also mow my own lawn, wash my own car, manage my own money… but I don’t have the time or inclination to spend that kind of time tracking them down and storing them, or figuring out which I think will appreciate more than another… yeesh. If you do and love it… go for it.
We are in Annapolis right now and found an awesome wine store. Got this to drink this afternoon. And found this. Initially I wasn’t going to get it but went back and got a bottle for myself and our friends. We visited the winery together and have opened a couple of these for special occasions. I don’t go crazy for naps cabs but this one holds some good memories and my wife loves it. Also how cool are these carriers that they had to so they could go in my luggage.
I mean, I would say that if you're a wine enthusiast who is also looking to get into collecting then spending the time to track them down and research what will appreciate the most is at least half the fun. If it's just an investment and nothing else, then yeah, I can see how annoying that would be. But do you, to anyone.
I opened my last 750 mL of 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot tonight, a DDO Laurene I bought on my first trip with my wife (then gf). I can’t say it benefited from aging to 13 vs say 7 years but it was great nonetheless. What a vintage.
Healdsburg family I know isn’t harvesting their grapes this year. Acres of grapes and no one is buying. No idea if this is common or just a result of all the smoke this year.
CA has an oversupply problem throughout the state (even ultra premium grapes) and has had one for a couple years now. Smoke could be an issue, but a lot of producers are trying to claim smoke taint for insurance purposes in hopes of making more money off that than selling to a secondary market or not harvesting.
Delivery season is good. 2 6-pack (DePonte & Andremily) deliveries today and a case (Reynvaan) on Friday.
When did it reopen? Thought it was still closed. Was this a private event? edit: Nevermind you probably meant the nyc location
Departing day from Napa/Sonoma today, and I’m crushed. What a trip: Food: Mustard’s Grill Napa Wine Train Dry Creek General Store FARM at Carneros Vineburg Deli The French Laundry SingleThread Wineries: Charles Krug V. Sattui Cast Dry Creek Viszlay Merriam Pine Ridge Gundlach Bundschu Imagery
Ha. I did the wine train yesterday. Got Palmaz and Castello di Amorosa today. Brix or Farmhouse for dinner.
For the record, SingleThread was significantly better than The French Laundry. Food, service, ambiance, presentation, all of it. Significantly better.
