I do think coaching is hugely overrated now. It can make the difference between 6-6 and 9-3, but there’s a talent threshold required to really compete. And, talent can overcome bad coaches. Kirby is a better coach than Orgeron, Chizik, or Coker (and maybe Dabo).
Totally agree. With the amount of roster and position coach turnover, along with inexperienced/immature/young players, I think the last 10-20 years of college football have really shown that talent acquisition/development is the most important part of a successful program. Maybe I’ve just seen too much Todd Grantham, but it seems like “scheme” guys just end up having trouble getting all 11 players on the same page regularly.
They'll never see it coming. Somewhere Justin Fields wipes a tear from his eye and see what he could have become.
Everyone here likes to rag on Bud, but his "blue chip ratio" is pretty eye opening to how this whole thing works. https://247sports.com/LongFormArtic...can-win-national-title-166530729/#166530729_4
"Coaching" often seems like a moving target(especially in college) that isn't well defined and fluid to the point of being made up depending on the point one is trying to make.
One time I was trying to convince my foreign friend that American football was the best sport. His main beef with it was "get the biggest/strongest/fastest guys and you win. There's no skill."
that's the rule, but there's still the human element. Players can be down on one side and focused on the other; that's when you get those times when a team that has no business competing manages to pull off an upset. It's tough to compare that feeling, even when you're watching it happen with no prior connection to the teams in question.
I’m on record with the very controversial take that Florida loses to UGA. I’m brave like that. That being said, it’s hard to compare because Richardson didn’t play against Bama and it’s a completely different offense in terms of capability when Richardson is on the field instead of Jones. It’ll be interesting to see if a Richardson led offense can put any stress on UGA’s defense, which no team has successfully done this year.
I expect Florida to have more success than anyone we've played to this point. We are going to get everything thrown at us. Dan is backed against the wall with nothing to lose.
It’s one of the maddening things about Mullen. Good Dan is brilliant, but when Bad Dan shows up he’s fucking abysmal.
I would agree with that. I think it's obvious he's still a premier play caller but it's only when he wants to be. Is he becoming the posterchild for playing up/down to his competition?
Talent is one of those things that you can't win a NC without passing a certain threshold but passing that threshold doesn't guarantee you'll be elite either. We had a lot of really talented Mark RIcht teams that went 10-3. Also see Clemson this year.
An elite QB can overcome talent deficiencies although no always. See Trask, Kyle. So of course Mullen plays the non-elite QB.
I was close to mentioning this as well. Elite QB's cover up a lot of bullshit. I think that's another reason Richt fell off so hard.
Definitely. The ball is oblong and bounces funny sometimes. Also sometimes you can take a bad loss and get in which seems to be the case this year and other years you can't
In basketball you've got the 3 pointer. In baseball you've got variance. In football you've got jimmys and joes.
Richt could easily have had multiple NC’s if the ball bounced a little differently/had there been a CFP during his time. I’m also not sure how much talent Clemson truly has outside of the DL and secondary. Hopefully that trend continues.
Prior to last year, I would’ve said 2016 was the best Bama team under Saban and they didn’t win the NC. Really just goes to show how important QB play has become.
Which is why as a Georgia fan it's still hard to feel good about our current team against an offense that can force us into a potential shootout.
Yeah we'll have to score 40+ to win at some point this season. You're going to want Daniels, if he's healthy, for that.
We’ve scored 30+ in 33 straight games, which is an NCAA record. So, you have to assume 30+ to beat us.
I don't really have any interest in ever watching us play Bama again. I'm going to be a huge Auburn fan come iron bowl.
You’re missing a critical ingredient. You also need to not have Todd Grantham as your defensive coordinator.
Pretty clear that Nick is grooming him to take over. Guessing he’ll get the HCIW tag this off-season.
