That's true of content of all sorts, as we - hopefully - progress as a society. Are Raw and Delirious some of the funniest standups of all time? Obviously. Are there a metric fuckton of gay-bashing issues present in them? Wellll...
There were LGBTQ people protesting Eddie Murphy at the time in the 80s for his comedy so people weren't totally ignorant.
The audacity it takes to vote for Ron DeSantis and then turn around and wish a trans person well. Incredible stuff.
True in content of all sorts but the mid 90s to mid 2000s was like outwardly gay/trans bashing prime time in comedies in the United States. Not sure why that was but if you look at a ton of mainstream comedies of the time it was very very frequently the butt of like, lots of jokes if not the main joke.
The progress on LGBTQ+ issues in the last 10 years is honestly astonishing and something to remember and champion in the US. It's really amazing. Which honestly I think is the crux of Dave's obsession with it. He's jealous that it's taken longer for black folks to be heard which, I mean, I get. But you don't need to obsessively shit on other marginalized groups to make your group gain ground.
gay marriage fear mongering and overall gay panic was a very useful political tool in that era and it spilled over into media and just mainstream culture Seth Rogen has talked a lot about how that early 2000's comedy scene propagated it in bad ways.
I was just thinking about this. When the country is so massively divided, the fact that this is true is worth mentioning. Your second point is what I've tried to understand Chappelle on but for someone who's been so amazingly capable in communicating and connecting with his audience to make points...he's completely missed the mark on doing so here.
It also struck me (and should have struck Dave) that when he said about it being reported he refused to speak to the transgender workers at Netflix it got a huge applause before he added in that he was never actually asked. They liked the idea of him refusing to acknowledge trans people. Speaks volumes as to what that crowd took away from "The Closer" and would be alarming to him if he cared. Not too many people in that crowd that care about laughing with LGBTQ people and not at them.
It should be very obvious who it’s about fwiw it’s not you. Think about the Florida posters, think about which ones are fascists... there ya go
No one's ever knighted bigots as the most clever community but that's such a ridiculous slur, I don't even know how to take it.
I watched Killin Them Softly for the 1,000th time a few months ago and what struck me was how far ahead of the curve Dave was, particularly as it pertained to Monica Lewinsky. He took a really different stance than most and rightly called out the hypocrisy of people shitting on her. It's sad to see him so far behind now and fighting for the right to.... shit on one of the most marginalized groups in America?
Being gay has always been frowned on in the black community. Maybe part of it is such a strong church upbringing or the idea that black men are strong and have to make babies, but in some ways black male toxic masculinity is as bad or worse than the white version. The Prince skit is the point I was making that you can make comments about disenfranchised people as long as you are funny. If they made the skit and Prince was playing in an effeminate way then it wouldn’t land, but they made the obvious point that a guy that looks and acts like Prince shouldn’t be that good at basketball because of stereotypes funny.
being a huge prince fan and knowing what a player he was i (just me) always thought the skit was funny because he was tiny and not because he was effeminate.
Oh most definitely. Everyone that knew Princes story knew he could ball. The skit worked to me because it brought that story out. Charlie Murphy sold it perfectly.
for me, the Prince skit works because it's going against the stereotypes. the small, effeminate men are beating the big masculine men at their own game and their embarrassment is the punch-line. this trans stuff isn't like that at all.
Someone please help me understand why the jokes about pedophilia and childhood sexual abuse “work”. Tia.
You’ve never heard any of his Micheal Jackson or R. Kelly material? It’s arguably his most famous material and usually gets the biggest laughs. Real crowd pleasing, knee-slapping stuff.
But they aren’t saying they don’t either. In fact it’s his most popular material. Why is that? Why aren’t the joke police defending survivors of childhood sexual abuse?
Comedy is subjective. If it’s funny it’s funny. Even in this controversy there are some saying his stuff was funny. Not sure what point you’re trying to make. Louis CK’s SNL monologue about pedos was fucking hilarious.
You do realize that the entire point here is that stuff that was considered funny 20 years ago won’t work today. What is the point you’re trying to make? You have a tendency to find the worst point of every situation.
Its pretty common knowledge that Prince could play basketball. Other stars had brought it up in the past.
No it wasn't. You think every white kid growing up in Florida knew that? I'm pretty sure that, like a lot of other knowledge, didn't make it to South Carolina.
I disagree in this case. I don’t think child sexual abuse has ever been acceptable. So if it was funny then it would be funny now. It’s not like racist jokes who where acceptable once but public opinion has changed. Some inappropriate jokes from the past would still be okay now.
people seem to miss the point in most these conversations. you can joke about anybody! about anything!, but the line is when the joke is just "gay people are gross and bad" or "trans isn't a thing" you're just laundering reactionary talking points, there's no comedy, just book your next gig at CPAC and give a speech. it's exactly what Carlin is talking about with Dice, there's no joke, you're just telling a certain audience what they want to hear so you can bond over othering people. it's how racial, sexual, etc heirarchies are maintained through socialization and mainstreaming.
