There are some big famous Art Deco statues in Cleveland right by their field called the Guardians. They're a very big deal in the city.
My mom grew up extremely scared of two things when she was a little girl: those guardian statues and the Statue of Liberty because of the scene in Planet of the Apes where it’s buried on the sand she still avoids Planet of the Apes and hates the Statue of Liberty, so she may never watch a baseball game again
“It is inconceivable that an organization worth more than $1 billion and estimated to have annual revenues of $290 million plus would not at least have performed a Google search for ‘Cleveland Guardians’ before settling on the name, and even a cursory search would have returned Plaintiff’s website (www.clevelandguardians.com) as the first ‘hit,’” the lawsuit said. The lawsuit said the baseball club “surreptitiously filed” a trademark application for the Cleveland Guardians’ name in the East African island nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, an attempt to prevent people from learning the name of the team. The lawsuit said the baseball club contacted the roller derby team two months later, claiming only that Guardians was one of the names the club was considering. The day before the Indians announced the new name, they filed two federal trademark applications. In the filings, the club did not mention the roller derby team, according to the lawsuit. “In other words, the Indians swore that they were not aware of anyone else having the right to use the Cleveland Guardians name on, among other things, ‘jerseys,’ ” the lawsuit says. “That was a lie.”
It could just be a Twitter thing but I saw that they havent even operated in two years and dont have a trademark. So they may just be looking for a paycheck cause I doubt they have the money to take this far.
It’s 100% that, hence why I thought the club’s offer was funny. That organization is pretty well-run and wouldn’t make a move that bold without knowing the lay of the land.
I saw the headline and missed the part that the roller derby team was in Cleveland. My first thought was "yeah, just because a roller derby team somewhere is named something, doesn't preclude others from using that name". "Hey man, I named my fantasy team that. You can't use that."
The frugal nature of the Dolan's knows no bounds. Heaven forbid we pay a top 5 player in the AL $12m per year.
It’s true, I was about to spend a couple hundred bucks on Guardians gear the other day, but just felt like they aren’t even trying to win so why try to support them? Absolute shame they at least have Ramirez and Bieber and are putting nothing around them
Wow - With the contracts they're giving out these days you'd have to think Jose was a candidate for one of these $250 or $300 million contracts with someone. What a bargain IMO
He definitely should have received more. Cleveland probably thought they were giving him a lowball offer that he would turn down. The Dolans are probably mad that they have to pay him now.
Dolan will now use this good pr as a cover to trade Bieber and anyone on the roster making above the league minimum
we have the third best run differential in baseball (huge sample size!) at +22 coincidentally, 22 is the number of different apex predators i've imagined devouring the dolan family alive since the season started
Towards the end of June we are driving from upstate New York to Michigan for a few weeks. We are stopping in Cleveland for a couple days, wife has a new job that is headquartered in Cleveland, so it will be me with the kids. I want to take them to their first baseball game. Question about Progressive field, in the evening is the third baseline good seats with the sun? Also will take recommendations on other places to sit but I want them to be close enough so they can get into the game a bit. Anything else to do in the Cleve?
Tough stretch of games coming up - Amazing they're in 1st place this late in the season with how young this team is.
This team can put up runs in a hurry, it's fun to watch. Wish the bottom end of the lineup would pick it up a bit but that's baseball
This team has something special going. Tito is somehow still underrated as a manager. Making the playoffs would far exceed my expectations from April. Would love to sneak in and find a way to ruin New York or Houston's season.
If they make the playoffs, I don't expect them to make it out of the ALDS. Unless they just absolutely collapse this season is an unquestioned success. I don't think I'd be upset if they even narrowly missed the playoffs, I expected total crap from this team in the spring.
Most important series of the year for the White Sox and big dick Tito and the bois come to the South Side and sweep their ass.
