I found a forum post from a month ago that says you need to power cycle the modem after enabling security and it will work. Sure enough, it worked. I’m still Jon Snow, but I at least have a basic firewall in place now. I appreciate the links. I’ve got some reading to do.
Posted this in a similar thread on the gaming board. May add a 3rd mesh node in the house I'm moving into in a few weeks.
Yea, a lot of their "advanced" features are very hit or miss. I've also had firmware issues before, but its all pretty easy to rollback and the forums are pretty good for basic support.
I have one switch that will take a firmware upgrade fine, but the next reboot, it needs a reset. Every. Time. Other than that most of my issues I have eventually determined were Layer 8/PEBCAK
I've been in the field for 20+ years (mostly military) and I've never heard of PEBCAK before, really missed out a lot of situations where I could have got a laugh with that.
Yeah that term really seems perfect for military use haha Some UniFi shots if anyone is intrigued by the SDN life, plus my setup.
Orbi’s still cruising. I’ve run into one issue I can’t seem to resolve though. I’ve put in a few tickets with Netgear and there seems to be an issue when downloading large files like video games from steam or Battle.net (>50gb) that it basically kills your internet. I’ve had to unplug the router on a few occasions because of this issue. It’s not just me either. There’s some discussion on Netgear forums as well. Just a heads up. Everything else is great.
There’s like a 90% chance you’re going to like either from what I’ve read, so I wouldn’t sweat it too much as long as you make sure it has any critical features you need. I haven’t used either system personally but both have been really well reviewed. That said, I like Ubiquiti a lot and sometimes Netgear pumps out some junk products. One thing to consider is if Wifi 6E is important to you. I believe the most recent Orbi is 6E but there is no 6E alien. I would only worry about this if you live in the midst of high density housing and want to future proof a bit.
Bump for help. I'm stuck between the Eero 6+ and TP-Link Deco XE75 but open to other suggestions. Any thoughts?
The Deco app is pretty useful. I bought 3 S4's a few years ago for our house (which is 3 stories, but small lot). It covers basically our whole property, although sometimes the switching isn't totally seamless. It is an older standard, though, so I imagine that what the extra $$$ for the XE gets you.
Thanks, allegedly the newer models are great but I've never had mesh so I'm not sure if my expectations are too high
Like I say, the one big issue we have is that my wife's computer doesn't always want to switch decos. I think it's an issue with her machine; no other device in the house has that issue. I was on wi-fi calling last night, and walked around the yard front to back. My parents were getting garbled for about 2sec every time the Deco switched. Not a big issue, IMO, and mine is a 2019 model, I think.
I run Google Nest. Having each point be a speaker is a lot of fun. Super easy to setup, schedules are great.
I’ve got an Orbi setup and it fucks. Had about 3 years and with just a single satellite it covers all over my lot. From a cursory look it seems they’ve started to go pretty upmarket but I’d highly recommend.
I’ve had a Google WiFi mesh setup for years and it’s worked great, no complaints. I’ve had it so long it wasn’t even Google Nest back then, just Google WiFi.
I have the main router and 2 points you can have for shipping if you want them. I upgraded to the Google Pro about 6 months ago and the older gen is sitting in a box. Signal seems to be a little better in a few rooms but it's negligible and I liked it better on the old system bc the points had google assistant and speakers built in and my whole life runs on Google so it was easy to do it in any room of the house. I had to add a couple of the mini's around the house to make up for losing them. https://store.google.com/us/product/nest_wifi_router?hl=en-US
Always pimp the Gryphon here, esp for folks with young kids. Very secure and amazing parental controls. https://gryphonconnect.com/
that's a very generous offer but having looked into it a bit, I think I need WiFi 6 or 6e for my usage. thank you though
I don’t know what eero I have but just ran a speed test on my phone furthest from the main router on one of the extenders and this seems p good
I was just looking to buy these and hopped in this thread... if you aren't gonna sell them I'd def take them off your hands
Bumping this thread. I currently have a google nest system. I have a shop about 30 feet from my main house and the point that I have in the corner of my house is really iffy connecting to the point in the shop. I did a little bit of searching, and it seems like the deco systems have the best range. Anyone have the AX3000 system or thoughts on how to get WiFi out there? Trenching a cat line out there isn’t an option as I’m a dummy.
my eeros are trash with my work laptop since they put me on windows 11. anyone have google WiFi with windows 11?
Trenching a cat line would be stupid, fiber would be the appropriate choice. Get a directional wifi antenna like the ubiquiti airmax.
I don’t know shit about fuck, that was just what I saw people say on Reddit to others in similar situations. Directional antenna and outdoor also seems too complicated for my dumb mind.
