Haven’t read anything, haven’t seen the previous version….watched it last night. Seemed a very bizarre ending if this got made before a sequel was greenlit.
If you mean movie 1 = book 1, then no. Movie 1 ends maybe halfway thru book 1. Maybe less than halfway.
I was smiling ear to ear leaving that theatre, thinking, “there’s so much more book one Dune to go…” First movie was 2.5hrs, covered about 40% of the first book, left out significant content, and was still great.
So re watching after Drogo meets with the Fremen woman after he escapes, it cuts back to some Harkonen people pushing something into a room with a Conjuring like creature on the ceiling in the corner. What was that?
The scene plays out a bit different in the book. The thing on the ceiling was the Baron. He activated his Holtzman shield (flicked his ring) as he leaned in towards Leto. Assassinations, backstabs, etc etc were heavy in the books - he expected some shenanigans. The fast expanding gas penetrated his shield slightly (that's why it flickered red). In the books, it's explained that shields inhibit gas exchange I believe. Spoiler: edit in book excerpt "He could analyze it now. His shield had been activated, set low but still enough to slow molecular interchange across the field barrier. And he had been pushing himself away from the table... that and Piter’s shocked gasp which had brought the guard captain darting forward into his own doom. Chance and the warning in a dying man’s gasp—these had saved him." He used his belt mounted suspensors to get to the ceiling as the gas was heavier than air. The shit they brought in was a healing tank or air purifier of some sort. The black oil substance bath was his therapy. Piter, who is expanded upon much more in the book and isn't just an underling like in the movie, died along with other important Harkonnen heads.
Yup. You can't do everything in a movie. Piter was the Baron's oily Mentat COO. Losing him was a huge strategic loss to the H's.
Now that I think about it the movie didn’t really get into the mentats at all beyond Thufir’s eyes rolling back in his head.
I haven’t read the books and knew zero backstory before watching, but the only connection I saw was Thufir and Piter having that black lip mark. Had no clue what that meant until your post.
There’s a scene in the ornithopter where they’ve captured Paul and his mother, the camera kind of shows frames around the vehicle to show you important things like how his mother is bound and gagged, one screen tho seems shows a diamond etched into the metal, I’m not sure what else I’d be looking at in that frame, does anyone know the significance or did I completely miss what they were intending to show)
Even though Yueh betrayed the Atredies family, he still cared for them. He left that pack for Paul and his mother to have a chance at surviving the desert. That’s why it was marked.
Spoiler been a bit since I finished the book but Paul was trained in almost everything mentat, the voice, etc
Yeah, I was flipping through some books and remember Paul was called Spoiler The Mentat Emperor or something like that.
Started the first book today. 3 chapters down. Mixed emotions because I’m really enjoying the book so far, but I also really enjoyed going into the movie blind.
There is a good amount the movie left out. You’ll still be surprised by things in the first part of the book.
i'm rewatching paul is stupid and wreckless about the danger of taking arrakis. leto knows the way. and the way sucks paul being confident as shit but not knowing the danger. there isnt an emoji to describe it
what makes you say this? I might have to watch again but I didn't get that impression - granted I have a book bias built in that may have made me overlook some things.
Think one of my favorite things about this movie is Stellan Skarsgård as the Baron. He’s grotesque and horrifying vs David Lynch’s baron who was just disgusting to look at and just lustfully stared at Sting the whole time
To be fair, Book Baron was very lustful towards Feyd. And we haven't seen New Movie Baron portray that relationship yet. But agreed that New Movie Baron is more menacing and less of a braying jackass.
I meant to ask this - did they just kind of combine Feyd and Rabban into one character or is Feyd just going to show up later?
No Feyd will absolutely show up, and the casting will be fascinating. As IV said, it's necessary and he's a fundamentally different type of villain. Spoiler The BG had intended that he mate with the girl that Paul was supposed to be to hopefully produce the KH
They could have completely omitted Shadout Mapes from the movie with the lack of development she received (felt like fan service, so maybe not al that bad.) Conversely, Pitar just being in a handful of scenes, then boom dead, was a disservice.
Was Jessica getting the Crysknife from Shadout not important going forward? TBH I thought that was one of the main reasons for her being in the movie. That and showing how big of an impact it would be emotionally/spiritually to their people if Paul is the one...
