Fishing was pretty good this morning until the wind began to knock a ton of leaves into the water. Made fishing pretty tough after that.

Looking at 23-25 foot boats. Looking between used Key West Bay Reef, Sea Hunt BX, Robalo Cayman, Sportsman 247, Pathfinder HPS/TRS. Something for inshore fishing and doing some offshore but not 100 miles offshore. Trying to get a bit of a deeper deadrise and weight to handle the chop. Gonna be a tough choice because I like all those boats.

my cousin started the skiff challenge and they have a skiff but he will tell you straight up they aren’t a skiff company and don’t do everything that hells bay will do. They still have a 2 year backlog on orders at minimum

Yeah, Hell’s Bay are built for one thing and one thing only. Great boats, but not a pleasant ride if there’s any sort of chop at all.

I disagree. Even a flat bottomed HB pro eats a chop well. A marquesa is probably the best riding true skiff there is

I'm thinking maybe there is a difference in what we call mullet. "Finger mullet" are bait. Sea mullet might be closer to what you call whiting? I'm not sure.

mullet are mullet. They get as big as whiting but they are still mullet. Always crazy to see how different places call the same fish

Funshot Residue’s mullet is a ground mullet which is also called whiting but properly known as southern kingfish. :comicbookguy:

I’ve seen plenty of mullet caught on hooks. They chum up pop corn then use a cane pole to catch them on a small hook and piece of popcorn

Sometimes. I use the Dorsey indicator, which is a homemade polypropylene yarn held on by a rubber band. I may leave it on and dead drift a streamer some, then take it off and strip it. I'm more apt to use one when I'm running a wooly bugger as the streamer.

Me and a buddy are fishing on my boat early tomorrow morning. Going to be 43 degrees at 6AM. Running the boat makes it feel at least 10-20 degrees colder. Gonna be freezing our balls off. Warms up into the 60s though later in the morning.

I took my dad to the local reservoir yesterday.

I had to convince him that leaving the house would be enjoyable. This is a man who's retirement life (before he got sick) consisted of golf twice a week, bowling twice a week, and fishing once a week. He was able to flip cast a texas-rigged worm for 15 minutes before he was ready to go home.

Didn't realize it defaulted to private when I uploaded it.

This was my dad from about 8 years ago. An absolute patient SoCal slow working worm expert. Multiple 10+ lbs LMB with a personal best at 13 1/2.

He's been through a ton in the last two years, lost his wife of 57 years, started dialysis, had four stents, dementia rearing it's ugly head. Doesn't want to do much these days but I keep trying to push him.

Not Alaska, but when was in middle school my family did that in Canada. We were catching walleye, lake trout and pike. I'd love to be able to do that in Labrador for those massive brook trout though.

No, but my buddy who hosted us in Caicos last week is a guide at Neknek and does the fly outs. Said it is incredibly and adds another $800~ per day. Rivers get very crowded so only way to truly get wild.

Did Sunday to Sunday at bonefish camp in the northern caicos. Most physically demanding week of my life. Trekking miles through soft sand, skeeters, kayaking open water, and swimming across lagoons is tough. Most fun I never want to do again. Wind was brutal. Open flats were tough, found the most fish in protected lagoons behind undeveloped vacation lots. Even lucked into juvenile tarpon that had never seen a fly. Bonefish were skittish, but you could slowly walk with the tarpon and take a few shots if needed. Incredibly bite and then tail walking. Most beautiful fish I've ever seen.

Got a basic Redington rod and reel to dip my toes into the world of fly fishing. The women in my family are asking what to get me for Christmas, so I’m thinking some basic gear to get started makes sense. Obviously a net, flies, fly box, scissors, sling pack, etc. are all things I’ll need, so any recommendations/guidance is greatly appreciated.

Google has recommended the following, but I’m starting from scratch and have no idea what I’m doing in the fly world:
    https://www.orvis.com/orvis-sling-pack/25FR-Family.html

Any suggestions or tips or recommendations for a complete novice who has been fly fishing once?
