Of course. A couple of students are trying to take up for him. They really just don’t understand the gravity of the situation though.
It's homecoming week, so the high school is having dress up days. Yesterday was character day and there were some quality entries. Although the one that was one of my favorites and most disappointing at the same time was the science teacher that dressed up like Forrest Gump (the run across the country look with the beard and bubba gump hat). I liked it because it was unique, but didn't like that no students understood the reference. A male student also wore one of those French Maid costumes and it was funny seeing how triggered some of the other boys were. Multiple boys went up to administrators asking why that outfit was ok but outfit xyz wasn't. The response was that it technically didn't violate dress code (skirt was appropriate length and it didn't have spaghetti straps).
Really happy I wasn't at my high school today as they had to go in to lock down because a student brought a gun on campus to allegedly use in a "criminal act" against another student. In what I assume is an unrelated incident, I got a text from my supervisor that another student from my high school was found dead this afternoon. Tomorrow was already slated to be busy enough.
How has it been for y’all in regards to general discipline/student misbehavior so far? Been as bad for us as I’ve seen in my four years; I’ve already sent probably 8-9 to alternative school.
I’ve never taught math, but I’m not sure Native American cosplay is the best way to hammer in a mnemonic device.
This is probably just me venting and feeling down right now, but it is criminal what teachers get paid. 30 years old and I'm having severe thoughts of why did I get into this profession. I love the actual teaching part and I'm very good at my job (specific special education service that I provide). Moreso up in arms about what my life will look like in the next ten years.
Apparently at our last school board meeting we had a couple parents stand up and complain about all the pride flags and BLM flags at our middle school. I work in our middle school and there are literally zero of both up in our school
We have tons of those hanging in our school. If you want to send them a picture of one of our classrooms to mess with them and pretend it came from yours, let me know.
The freshmen are having a lot of trouble adjusting to HS (norms, rigor, etc.) - somewhat understandably since they spent their entire eighth grade year virtual. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same.
-“My internet went out. That’s why I didn’t submit the assignment” Me - ok, what were you doing the 2 days before and the class time I gave you to do the assignment?” - “idk Mr. Pearl” Me- “idk, why you got this zero either then.”
We all feel that way. The real question is whether it’s worth it in the end. For me it is but I got into the profession late (age 40). I’ve only been here 4 years and have already seen so many teachers decide it’s not worth the hours, etc. Every year on the HR survey, I check off the boxes for: “I plan on being here for 10+ years - strongly agree” “I would recommend this line of work to someone I know who is looking for a job - strongly disagree.”
Honest question, would a parent at your school complain about this? (Taken from the room I’m covering right now.) edited to add more signage from Around the school:
Showing The Blair Witch Project in class yesterday and one student said she wasn’t scared and she couldn’t relate to it. Me: “Haven’t you ever camped in a tent before? You actually hear sounds like that in the woods.” Her: “No I haven’t slept in a tent before. I’m black!”
Got to make my first Office of Professional Standards report today in my 10 yr career due to a teacher cussing me out on an IG DM over a work related matter. I knew nothing would come of it, but I still couldn't help but roll my eyes when it came back as unsubstantiated because it came from a burner account with no identifying info.
Kindergarten student in a Montessori school I service is talked shit about to her face and seen as a lost cause by her teacher and para, truth is she's the sweetest student I have this year and just needs a little nudge in the right direction She's quite the drawer. Likes anime and planets as you can see.
Favorite lesson of the year. Allies attacking the Axis powers. Ending with me showing them the D-day scene from Saving Private Ryan Most of these sickos had grins on their faces watching it.
At a grade level where coloring in the lines is considered to be part of their grades..... I want to come there and punch some teachers in the face
I'm ready for the spring semester. A couple of my classes are absolutely miserable and I'm holding out hope that I'll have a better combo of students in the spring when some schedules are shuffled around.
I'm at a small charter school so it's a little all over the place. PE/Health, Anatomy & Physiology, and Driver's Ed. My freshmen in PE are a pain because it feels like a class full of 11 year olds. At the same time one of my A&P classes is great, and one expects me to spoon feed them everything even though they're seniors.
Yeah, at least you can reset with those semester courses. Gives you a chance to reset classroom rules and procedures
We can't hire paras, can't hire new teachers, can't find subs, kids are nutty this year, little help from parents in regards to behavior, this Friday has been declared off due to shortage Teachers get paid shit and are shit on, it's great Had a drive by shooting yesterday at a high school, it put six students in the hospital, two of which are fucked for life
For what it's worth Denver isn't bad abnormally bad. It's just Covid has really brought out the shit in everyone and you see it more in large school districts and when you service the entire school district like myself. Some really lovely schools/teachers. 6,081.42 teachers here evidently
The US (everywhere, our country is stupid as shit though) is fucking crazy. Denver has car jackings, random shootings, auto theft times million etc etc. The nutty people are out in full force.
this week has felt like it has already lasted like 8 days. It’s dragging so hard. I’m probably feels that way because basketball season also started this week
